Says thanks to bus driver

Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

OP posts:

Because it’s basic manners, it’s a long and tiring job driving busses with long shifts where you get paid peanuts, get abused in a daily basis and work unsociable hours like having to be up at 4am to start work at a bus station 60 miles away even though the nearest depot is much nearer. It doesn’t cost anything to say thankyou and I will teach my children to say it .

DemobHappy · 03/04/2021 14:22

I always greet the driver and say ‘thanks’ when I get off, and I’m a hard faced Londoner. Manners cost nothing.

Piggyhoolier · 03/04/2021 14:25

I suspect poppycat10 doesn’t actually understand what virtue signalling is.

Having manners and displaying common courtesy are very basic foundations of civilised societies.

HelloMoto3 · 03/04/2021 14:27

Here are few reasons:

  1. As noted above, bus drivers work very long shifts often at unsociable times for relatively low pay. Their work enables others to go to work or to get out of the house which is critical for many users who could not otherwise travel eg the elderly and the disabled.
  1. It is a difficult job to do because it is a huge vehicle often on tight and busy roads. The risk if it went wrong is high.
  1. Bus drivers were considerably MORE likely than most other employees to die of Covid. Many London bus drivers died during the pandemic and a large number continued to work in order to get essential workers to work.

So I guess I say thanks because I’m genuinely grateful.

ddl1 · 03/04/2021 14:29

You don't HAVE to, but it's nice to do so, and costs nothing.

poppet131 · 03/04/2021 14:31

I always say thanks but I haven’t been on a bus for over a year. It’s good manners and kind.

ddl1 · 03/04/2021 14:31

And the bus driver is taking a slight risk at the moment (and it was a greater risk a few months ago) to help you get from A to B. I don't think you should grudge them a thank you.

FireflyRainbow · 03/04/2021 14:32

Its good manners. Obviously.

Bellyups · 03/04/2021 14:36

@hesnearly3, if you don’t get it, then you lack even basic manners. Did your parents not teach you manners? Confused

SpacePug · 03/04/2021 14:36

@CongealedCrags

You always say 'Cheers Drive' as you leave the bus. It's The Rule.
🤣 are you from Hull by any chance!?
womaninatightspot · 03/04/2021 14:38

Depends on the bus. you always thank driver when you go out the door by driver. Exit door further back you don't bellow down the bus.

HOkieCOkie · 03/04/2021 14:40

Basic manners...

SapphireSeptember · 03/04/2021 14:40

I always say thank you! I've worked in a shop and in a cafe and the people who don't say thank you piss me off, it's just rude.

KaleJuicer · 03/04/2021 14:41

It’s polite. I do it. I live in London but from nz.

I do though! When I've used the buses in London I have (although they were ones with the door halfway down and not right at the back.) It feels wrong not to say thank you.
butterpuffed · 03/04/2021 14:42

I've never heard anyone NOT say thank you when they get off the bus , it's only polite.

I was going to write a longer post but clicked on 'See all' in the OP's original post and she's not responded to anyone or made any further comments so I guess it's just a wind up Hmm

On London Buses you generally exit by the middle door, I always say thanks driver loud enough for them to hear. You don’t have to ‘bellow’
Skyliner001 · 03/04/2021 14:44

Why thank a waiter for a meal they have given you?
Why thank a bar tender for a drink?
Why thank a shop owner for th change they have given you?

... I'm sure you can see where this is going Op

Yes! Even though I still live in Gloucestershire they get a 'cheers drive'.
tinytemper66 · 03/04/2021 14:48

@WiseOwlOne

They do this in Ireland. I don't remember people doing it in the UK, but maybe I was the rude one not saying thank you there.
We always thank 'Drive' in Wales too.
Caroline88h · 03/04/2021 14:50

It's polite.

lazyarse123 · 03/04/2021 14:54

I am feeling truly heartened by the number of pp who have told the op how wrong she/he is to think it's okay not to thank drivers or any other service provider presumably.
I was feeling a bit down about the way society seems to be heading eg rubbish left in parks, unruly protests etc.
I feel better now thank you everybody.

MintyMabel · 03/04/2021 14:55

My clients thank me for doing my job. I thank my colleagues when they help me by doing their job. It’s basic good manners.

Positivevibesonlyplease · 03/04/2021 14:55

Same as you say thank you to shop workers, taxi drivers, waiters. It’s nice and polite.

TheHumanSatsuma · 03/04/2021 14:56

@AcornAutumn

I'm about to do just this very shortly!

If you don't get it, I can't make you see it.

👏
