Says thanks to bus driver

Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

Manners cost nowt

What a shame to live a life that is only economically transactional rather than based on being part of a community of humans doing their best to get by together

littlepattilou · 03/04/2021 12:02

@Ohnomoreno

It's a very British thing. Doesn't happen anywhere else. Nice, but yes I also don't get it.
Load of shit. I have travelled to around 20 countries over the past 20 years, (throughout Europe, Africa, America, Eastern Europe, and South America,) and in every single one of them, people have (and often expect) good manners.

You're either deluded, or you have never travelled anywhere else but the UK in your LIFE, if you think 'only the British' are polite! Shock

Erkrie · 03/04/2021 12:02

Because it's a polite thing to do. Because the bus driver is a human not a robot. Because it spreads a little happiness and makes someone's day a teeny bit better. Why wouldn't you say thank you.

iMatter · 03/04/2021 12:02

I always say thanks.

Even my teenagers manage it.

toconclude · 03/04/2021 12:04

@WiseOwlOne

They do this in Ireland. I don't remember people doing it in the UK, but maybe I was the rude one not saying thank you there.
In England here: always do, always have as does everyone I know. Odd you missed it but it's pretty common.
LadyCatStark · 03/04/2021 12:06

It’s really the most basic of manners and as they say, manners cost nothing. It’s literally one short word. It’s probably takes more effort to consciously not say thanks than it is to just do it automatically. It was one of the first things I taught DS about getting the bus to school when he started high school this year.

Bungalowlady · 03/04/2021 12:07

Because it can make a drivers day and is polite.
Would you not thank a taxi driver, waiting staff or checkout person?

partyatthepalace · 03/04/2021 12:07

Because it’s good manners, it acknowledges the driver as a person, not just a service bot, and that acknowledgment of humanity is good for you as well as them - same as you thank an Amazon delivery driver or a waiter.

Do you really not understand that / or did you just land from Mars and have only just encountered humanity??

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/04/2021 12:08

@orangecinnamon

It was drilled into me growing up to do this, basic manners. I still do it..it does feel a bit weird on London buses if I recall because of layout.

DH was most impressed when someone thanked him for getting them to their destination recently, because a) he's a train driver so it rarely happens b) it was Penelope Keith!

Now I know it's good enough for Penelope Keith, I feel all of us saying thank you have been totally vindicated!
Tossblanket · 03/04/2021 12:08

It's polite, it costs nothing.

It may brighten their day.

Because I'm not a miserable cunt.

Bluetrews25 · 03/04/2021 12:09

I say thank you to everyone.
I also say 'good boy' to my car when he starts in the morning to take me to work (he's alive, I tell ya), and I say thank you to the traffic lights that stay green for me (or change from red on my approach as they can see me coming) Grin

Is anybody else quite saddened by this post?
MsAwesomeDragon · 03/04/2021 12:10

I thank all sorts of people who are just doing their jobs. Delivery drivers get a thank you when they deliver my parcels (if I'm in) or food. Hairdressers get a thank you when they've sorted out my hair. When I go to the doctor I say thank you at the end of the appointment. Loads of kids in my classes say "thanks miss" as they leave the lesson (there are quite a few who say considerably worse things, so I appreciate the thank yous)

onemouseplace · 03/04/2021 12:10

In London you get on at the front of the bus and then get off at either the middle or the back. If it's busy, I never say thanks to the driver as I get off as that would involve shouting over the tops of about 10 people's heads which would be just odd.

I do always say thank you if the bus is half empty, or it's a late night one though.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 03/04/2021 12:12

I always say thank you because it's courtesy.

FlyingBurrito · 03/04/2021 12:13

I've got one for you @hesnearly3 why do you write ppl and u ?

I don't get it? Why write mostly a literate sentence but spoil it with stupid abbreviations?

JovialNickname · 03/04/2021 12:13

Common courtesy that costs you nothing!

theotherfossilsister · 03/04/2021 12:13

You say thank you to the checkout person at the market. Isn't a bus the same?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 03/04/2021 12:13

Happytodayhappytomorrow Not at all. For a start, I don't think it's real, I think the OP is just a bit bored and cross - and secondly, it's not what I see out in the real world so the OP is a bit of an outlier/wannabe maverick.

But nobody's really affected by that silly standpoint, are they? It causes an eyebrow raise and momentary thought about lack of manners. That's all.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 03/04/2021 12:14

It's polite, it costs nothing. It may brighten their day. Because I'm not a miserable cunt.

Best summary so far.

See now the OP is a bit on the rude side (in her head) but she didn't post like a twat. That nomenclature goes to you, FlyingBurrito, for picking her up on the way she posts.

Have you not see the recent thread about accronyms on Mumsnet? Widely used by many and no laws broken.

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2021 12:17

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

I've stopped though, thanking nobody in particular as I'm getting out of the tube. That was a tough one to break.

I haven't stopped thanking cashpoints though, when the money comes out. I wish I would though, it' must look weird.

If any cash comes out, I'm generally thanking God 😊😂
EdwardTeach · 03/04/2021 12:19

I once had a bus driver comment on my manners. I guess I must have been the first passenger that day to say "please" and "thank you" when buying a ticket. Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 03/04/2021 12:19

Me too, Worra. I have managed to curtail myself now from doing a 'happy dance'. Grin

catsandchaos · 03/04/2021 12:19

It's natural for Sheffield folk to say thanks.
Makes the day nicer
