To think that holidays are non essential?

The amount of whinging about missing out on holidays here and elsewhere has been shockingly irritating. Will missing out on a couple of trips to Megaluf/bland med cruises REALLY be the end of the world? It's such a shocking tone-deaf and privileged way to live your life.

Will staying at home and talking to your DC/learning a language/read a few books really be the end of the world? It's pretty grim absolutely NEED trips abroad or the seaside to to distract yourself from your own life.

No need to look down your nose at people who have different opinions to yours.

diwrnachoflleyn · 02/04/2021 14:29

Some parts of the UK have pretty shitty weather much of the year. But alas, people are welcome to their sanctimonious staycations.

I'll be jetting off. Grin

TooTrueToBeGood · 02/04/2021 14:31

The majority of the money most of us spend is on non-essentials. Don't judge others just because their higher priority non-essentials are different from yours. It just shows you up as a judgemental dick.

Ohwhataprogramme · 02/04/2021 14:31

Op where are you then? Too busy self improving yourself

Slub · 02/04/2021 14:32

OP starts a goady thread and pisses off to name change
Hold the fucking front page! Hmm

Brainygaga · 02/04/2021 14:32

I love our holidays. We enjoy them as a family and they enrich our lives. My two are teens and will be off on their own soon so ye, I am disappointed that we are missing out on the last holidays we could be taking all together. I know it's all relative and there are bigger issues at play. iIf we can't go I understand and will accept it but I won't apologise for being disappointed!

ilovesooty · 02/04/2021 14:32

The OP doesn't seem to be coming back.

bishbashbosh99 · 02/04/2021 14:33

Ohhh bore off

TatianaBis · 02/04/2021 14:33

I didn't fuss last summer, but this year I really, really want a holiday.

tttigress · 02/04/2021 14:34

You sound quite snobbish OP, a holiday could change someone's life.

Also if you are older in years these restrictions may stop the last chance you have of a holiday.

I think you are just looking at everything from your own perspective.

shouldistop · 02/04/2021 14:34

Oh fuck up op

RosesAndHellebores · 02/04/2021 14:35

Usually op when we all go out to work every day there's nothing I like better than a week at home but after a year of working from home, under huges stress to try to keep an institution afloat (similar for DH) I need a break away from our home, lovely though it is. That's why we had 1w days in the UK last summer and why we are looking forward to a holiday in the UK in May, a week away.

Usually we spend August and other separate periods at our home in France. We can't do that at present but I wish we could.

kurentovanje · 02/04/2021 14:36

Holidays are, like it or not, one of the only ways modern capitalism allows people to have a real break and disconnect.

If we want to do away with the need for them we'd have to significantly restructure society. So yes, right now, in our current society, they are essential. Not having them for a long while could lead to very poor MH outcomes and lead to an undercurrent of discontent.

NewVariable · 02/04/2021 14:37

OP, are you bored?
You say you think people who want to go on holiday irritate you and then not a single follow up comment from you?
You started a silly thread

You can go! Maintenance on your second home is permissible. Go for it! Smile
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/04/2021 14:39

And holidays support economies. Tourism is big business.

TastefulLiving · 02/04/2021 14:40

well, our holidays usually are to my home country so my Dcs can see their grandparents. I'd like to do that before either or both of them die.

Since the first lockdown I have seen my job go because my workplace collapsed. My eldest son has been diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, Tourettes and epilepsy. He has had a severe mental health crisis and has been self harming due to the stresses of lockdown. Our annual holiday to my home country has always been pretty essential in terms of anchoring him.

maybe not 'essential' but it certainly feels like it.

Seriously....I cannot believe how much people downplay mental health on mumsnet but pull it out for everything. Yeh sure just have a holiday and the mental health of the nation will be solved!
OneKeyAtATime · 02/04/2021 14:42

I agree with you. I used to go on holiday 4 or 5 times a year and love them but no they are not essential.

DustySpringboard · 02/04/2021 14:42

Op lit the blue touch paper then legged it to learn a new language

Keepyourdistance000 · 02/04/2021 14:42

Holidays are a luxury rather than essential, and you are very fortunate if you can afford one.

Essential imo is a roof over my head, food on the table and being able to pay my bills.

LilaButterfly · 02/04/2021 14:43

Its essential when half your immediate family lives overseas. DH hasnt seen his siblings and parents in over a year. We would usually see them 3-4x a year for several weeks each time.
We miss them dearly and its rough!

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2021 14:47

I'd like to go and see one of my best friends in the Netherlands and to visit someone else in Germany.

Lots of people would like to go and see family who live abroad.

To put it bluntly, Magaluf is one of the last places on earth I'd like to go on holiday to. Especially since it looks like the Spanish government are saying masks on the beach and even in the swimming pool! Why the hell would I want to go somewhere full of Brits?! I can go on holiday in the UK much more easily!

TownTalkJewels · 02/04/2021 14:49

@Notanotherhun air travel produces around 3% of global carbon emissions. Leisure travel alone, even less.

Half of the developing world are able to feed their populations because of travel.

Would love to see your cost benefit analysis though!

kurentovanje · 02/04/2021 14:51

@gallbladderpain That's nowhere near what I said, and I'm the last person who would downplay mental health.

I don't agree that a holiday will solve mental health issues, far from it. I think it is horrendous that the only thing many people have to look forward to each year is a couple of weeks away. But unfortunately that's the situation we've got to. We have very little work life balance, hours are long, pay is low, mental health services are in tatters. I do believe holidays are one thing that keeps many people going and is something they sadly cling on to - but it should not be the only thing that does. It just unfortunately is because of the structure of our society and, well, capitalism.
