To think that holidays are non essential?

The amount of whinging about missing out on holidays here and elsewhere has been shockingly irritating. Will missing out on a couple of trips to Megaluf/bland med cruises REALLY be the end of the world? It's such a shocking tone-deaf and privileged way to live your life.

Will staying at home and talking to your DC/learning a language/read a few books really be the end of the world? It's pretty grim absolutely NEED trips abroad or the seaside to to distract yourself from your own life.

If they don't enjoy it then it should be banned Hmm

@saltinesandcoffeecups

“And we have today’s first contender in “Misery Olympic Games”. Coming strong out of the gate in 100 word condemnation event is Silliantro.

Now obviously they high horse is essential in this event and extra points are awarded for a strong sneer, but you’ll notice that she lost an opportunity to play the ECO card, that may cost her in the long run. We’ll check back to see how she does, right after the curtain twitching semi-finals.

Over to you Kent”

Brilliant. You, OP need to develop just a smidgeon of fucking empathy and humility and the realisation that people's circumstances are all different. Of course on the face of it holidays aren't essential in the way that other aspects of UK society are but I live alone and they are the thing I'm missing most. Your post stinks quite frankly, including its sneering tone. And it has no understanding of the effect that this situation has on those employed in the travel industry and their families. Thank goodness I'm not you. Life has its mercies.

I'm fed up about the amount of whinging on here about just about everything to do with Covid. Would it REALLY be the end of the world to f**k off and read a book or something if you don't like other peoples lives, instead of endlessly whining about other peoples lives?

Oh, and never been to Megaluf or on a Med cruise, but I still miss the enriching experience of travelling and can't wait to get back to it. But if those are the choices that other people make, at least I have the good grace to acknowledge that that is about the lives they enjoy and value and not sit around like some entitled, privileged, judgmental brat with a keyboard.

So please take your shocking irritation and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

Yup, the pandemic really has bought the worst out in people in so many ways.

If you aren't fucking miserable whilst going on daily 5 mile death marches you aren't doing lockdown right.

diwrnachoflleyn · 02/04/2021 14:13
@diwrnachoflleyn each to their own, mine much prefer to have their mum picking them up and finding out about their day at school every day rather than getting 2 weeks in a kids club on an expensive cruise. There's many ways to enjoy life and holidays are not essential to life enjoyment!
So people who use kids clubs on holiday also don't pick up their kids from school and talk to them Hmm. Right. Holidays are not essential to life enjoyment to you. They are to others, because there are many ways to enjoy life.

Ours love cruises. We can't wait to sail again. Woohoo! The kids' club is awesome, they have a blast. We always have dinner in the dining room so pick up the kids, get changed for dinner, have a huge family meal, then they either go back to the kids' club, their choice, or we go to shows, arcade, etc. Port days we go on expeditions. Fun plus!

We've seen some amazing places.

I think climate change will start having an impact on people’s choices soon and the golden age of being able to jet off anywhere will come to an end.

How it will look going forward I don’t know but I would be ok with airmile rations, per person / company. Can only be exchanged within a family to stop people selling them.

Exceptions allowed for unexpected family circumstances.

Notanotherhun · 02/04/2021 14:14

Haven't RTFT but considering emissions and climate change etc etc, and the fact that one flight produces more emissions than you will produce in a lifetime... surely holidays should be seen as a rarity. Yes it's nice to travel, and yes economies are constructed around tourism, but honestly the cost of it is enormous.

It's definitely the Misery Olympics with a soupcon of sneering bollocks about how much better a parent they are.
ilovesooty · 02/04/2021 14:15

And I see that you name changed for this. How unsurprising. Cowardly goady behaviour. You don't want your other posts associated with this one, do you?

tobee · 02/04/2021 14:15

What is it with these people that start these ridiculously goady slagging people off threads that the op never returns to?

There's a plague of them at the moment. Very strange.

Not absolutely essential no but to many people very desirable
We normally go abroad 3x a year and have a few UK based breaks as well
Each to their own,I am very much looking forward to being able to go away again

blueangel19 · 02/04/2021 14:17

If I were living in a country with good weather I would not moan. Being stuck here is many people’s nightmare. And yes I am bloody waiting to move away as soon as this is all over. I really do not want be old, cold and poor here.

Nope, surely not. Travel produces emissions, it's been fuelling economies for thousands of years, get over it.

If airmile rationing becomes a thing it should not discriminate against single people and households.

Wow. I didn't know that ancient civilisations were jetting off in planes.

CheltenhamLady · 02/04/2021 14:23

Do grow up OP.

Your take on holidays is obviously a very personal one. My holidays and those of many on MN, are clearly different to the experiences you have had. That is why I miss them.

Define essential? For whom?

A car? A horse? a dog? A Nanny? a Cleaner? A nice house?

Do you get my drift?

Each to their own OP.

Not everyone here is cold and poor here (we all get old). We have plenty of good weather too.
JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 02/04/2021 14:26

So OP do you only do things which are essential? Do you only drink tap water and eat bread to survive or do you want more than that? Do you have a car? Do you have a television? More than one room for your family to sleep in? A garden instead of just using outdoor public space? Have more than one pair of shoes? Children? None of these things are essential.

You must be a joy to live with, you sound very bitter to be honest.

NotSorry · 02/04/2021 14:26

OP’s first post + school holidays + goady message designed to get mners into a froth = Hmm

cjpark · 02/04/2021 14:26

I bloody love our holidays and travel and they keep me going through often dark times and allow our family time to reconnect. We are both doctors and this last year has been really difficult. We've been passing like ships in the night, kids have been sat in sport halls at school with a laptop for 6 hours a day. Travel allows escapism, education, experiences and time for us to share this as a family. We've booked something for end of July which I really hope comes off.

diwrnachoflleyn · 02/04/2021 14:26

@Notanotherhun

Wow. I didn't know that ancient civilisations were jetting off in planes.
They were definitely not dumping waste into the ocean and recycling. Hmm

But there you got 'jetting off', another one who hates that fact that planes exist. They're here to stay. Get over it.
