to expect to have more disposable income than single mums claiming benefits

i no longer know why me and dh bother, he works full time and i work part time so that i can juggle the child care.

i know of 3 single mums who stay near me who seem to have more money than i can dream of, out every weekend, always shopping and 2 of them manage to run cars.

i know the benefit system is needed by some people but it seems to be a complete joke these days, the wasters in this country are leading the life of reilly while the rest of us are left to slog our guts out to pay for there existence.

no doubt i will get flamed for this post but i have been out xmas shopping today trying to work to a budget then i stand next to these people at the school gates and hear about all the grants they are entitled to so they can buy xmas presents, one of them has even cut back the last 2 months and managed to save £800, it would take me bloody months to save that up.

ok rant over, deep down i am glad i am not one of these people and i do actually work for what i have but it still pisses me of.

No need to shout. I'm confused now. So anybody who chooses not to work (on benefits or not?) is a scrounger?

Are there any extenuating circumstances attached to that or are you just going to leave it as the ill thought out sweeping generalisation that it appears to be?

expatinscotland · 10/11/2007 20:37

i always laugh my arse off when people complain about the size of their mortgage whilst being spiteful towards people on benefits.

breaks out world's smallest violin . . .

I've seen them, too, Kerry.

And the attitude many people and certainly the government take towards the poor and the working poor is one of the major reasons I will never so long as I draw breath live there again.

Because it's sick, disgusting, pitiless, heartless to basically condemn an entire generation of children to abject poverty for the simple reason that they were born poor. As if it's somehow their fault.

Then turn around and blame them for becoming angry adults.

ivykaty44 · 10/11/2007 20:39

Inthegutter - if you suspect, then you should be reporting that person to the goverment department. Seems you are backing out know, there is no harm in reporting someone if you suspect their lifestyle doesn't fit - as if everything is above board nothing will happen - YET if it is not above board and they are fiddling the system it will stop and the use of tax payers money will revert to those that need it.

So you don't need evidence, if everyone needed evidence before being investigated no one would be reported.

'Why do you deal drugs son?

Because my momma's lost her job scrubbing floors and my brothers and sisters are hungry and we can't pay the rent on the tenement flat. '

Jude to defendent: Well, that's your fault for being poor. You know, I know tons of poor people who managed to work 100 hours a week for $2/hour and they got by.

So I'm sentencing you to 15 years in prison. Then I'll expect you to find work to support yourself after you're out with a felony on your record.

NEXT!

UniversallyChallenged · 10/11/2007 20:46

Kerrymum, that is such a sad situation you describe in america. I agree with benefits for those who cant work, like single mums with preschoolers, not those in society who wont work, that's not what the system was set up for.

BTW Tortoise - we booked one of those hols and then realised if we'd booked direct with the holiday camp it would have been 20% cheaper aaarrrggghh

mamazon · 10/11/2007 20:47

ahh tehy just need to move near inthegutter cos there are loads of jobs in her local paper

yes, mamazon. she could move to america. where the reason why people are poor is always because it's their own fault. they didn't pick themselves by the bootstraps, apply themselves, etc.

ssd · 10/11/2007 20:50

we also booked one of those holidays then when the time came to pay the balance we couldn't afford it so we lost the £38 deposit

dh works full time, I have 3 part time jobs fitting around the kids

where do we fit in?

I was going to post the details on mn to see if someone else wanted to go in our place but I was too scunnered

expatinscotland · 10/11/2007 20:51

well, kerry, then they're welcome to come over to mine and see all the bills i got from hospital. that was after i'd been made redundant during dot.bomb, along with tens of thousands of others, and was scraping by on temp gigs paying $8/hour. then a drunk driver in a stolen car slammed into my car. being working poor, i had only liability insurance and no health insurance - wasn't offered thru the temp agency.

i'd be happy to show them the bankrupcy decree the court issued me after that.

and we could reminice about how fun it is to live on the generosity of friends or various boyfriends, drive your git boyfriend's car because even though he's a lying cheating prick you don't have the money for a car, etc.

ssd · 10/11/2007 20:51

your not wrong kerrymum

mamazon · 10/11/2007 20:52

SSD - you are one of those who are being screwed by a minimum wage that doesn't work.

expatinscotland · 10/11/2007 20:53

you must be my long-lost sister, ssd.

in the same boat here.

ssd · 10/11/2007 20:54

I feel we're being royally screwed for being honest, would be better off saying dh doesn't live here anymore and then I'd get £help

thats what my neighbour did and she's the one buying her dp who still lives with her a £300 Xmas present

its hard not to be bitter but I know I'm well off in other ways

MALO · 10/11/2007 20:55

Colditz - do what?!

Have I not just said that I know there are those that are struggling on benefits BUT there are also those that are not and can work and are abusing the system - as mamazon kindly acknowledged.

I rest my case because I've had enough and I don't come on this site to piss people off but we're not all going to agree are we?

We're all different, all have different opinions and all come from different backgrounds living in different situations.

We all have the right to say what we want on here and if you are not agreed with then so be it as is obviously the case with me.

expatinscotland · 10/11/2007 20:55

yeah, it pretty well is, fio.

so i'm not going to waste it begrudging someone a fucking Bugaboo.
