AIBU knowingly not refunding all the money

I had a nightmare lodger who I kicked out. Basically she was worried about her family members catching covid and started to be intrusive about my personal life. Cat vomited on the sofa (not the first vomit) and she decided to berate me about not taking pics/telling her. Final straw came when my bubble weren’t allowed in my back garden for birthday cake - yet she broke the lockdown laws by seeing her boyfriend all the time, and he would stay every other weekend.

Anyways, she wanted her deposit/rent back - which she asked for via email stating “I deem 7 days to be enough time and forward me receipts for any deposit money taken” told her to read the agreement (that she wanted) which meant I would send via cheque within 3 weeks.

The money went out of my account, however the amount is £100 lower than what I owe her. I didn’t take a pic of the filled in cheque and she’s not contact me.

I’m sure the banks didn’t make an error and she’s the type to follow up the money.
AUBU by just ignoring the short money?

If I was sent a cheque that was £100 short then I would have contacted the sender while I still jad it as "proof". So it seems odd that the ex lodger hasnt done so.

Definitely contact the bank to get them to investigate

Are you the lady with the nurse lodger who told you off for being in your own kitchen?

Didn't she have two of 'em?

Howtomakeevery1 · 31/03/2021 21:55

£100 was clearly worth it to have you out of her life. I don’t blame her to be honest

lighteincastlewindow · 31/03/2021 23:36

You have tried to screw her out of money and you are coming on here to see if it's possible she has a leg to stand on. A deposit is for damages to the property not for psychological damages to your poor soul or ego or intellect. You have absolutely done the wrong thing and you well know it. I hope she follows up and gets her money and if she doesn't everyone even here can see what a grabby person you are.

lighteincastlewindow · 31/03/2021 23:39

and to answer your question, no she probably won't follow up on the money she has lost, because she knows what kind of a yoke she is dealing with. I would though and I'd make short shrift of 'wrong cheque' shite, how predictable.

Whether it was the bank's error or your own is irrelevant. Either way you still owe her £100.
