Buddy and his Missus are in the boat, but facing each other.
They've been going round in circles for ten minutes.
Am I an ass hole for laughing?

Are you on drugs?

You do realise not every British accent has long vowels, right? I say ‘ass’, not ‘arse’ because I have a Midlands accent.

Morgan12 · 29/03/2021 21:17

What?

Sparklingbrook · 29/03/2021 21:18

Should we know who 'Buddy and his Missus' are?

People from the midlands don’t say ass!!

Would you spell it ass or arse? Only ass seems more American to me. I like a nice British Arse!

Ass seems less rude too. Arse used to be a proper swear, I'm sure!

Roszie · 29/03/2021 21:20

Yes.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 29/03/2021 21:20

Well at least two of us do since DH and I are both born and raised and don’t say “arse”!

I’m born and raised too and have never ever heard anyone say ass! I wonder if it depends on which part of the midlands?
Sparklingbrook · 29/03/2021 21:22

I am from the Midlands and say 'arse', but back to the boat...

usedandabusedx1000 · 29/03/2021 21:22

Well I’m just going to say that the photo actually looks like an American place (based on nothing at all!) therefore, ass would be likely?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 29/03/2021 21:22

I’m from the Midlands and I say ass. I’d write arse, but I say ass. So does my husband.

Never really thought about the spelling to be fair... it’s the ‘arrr’ sound I don’t get, like how Southeners say “grass” with a long A.

(I am aware this is derailing the thread but nobody knows what the OP is on about anyway, so might as well)

Right hang on, how do you pronounce words like bath and grass? I’m interested in where our accents diverge now. We’re also heading dangerously close to Mum vs Mom territory which always gets oddly heated on MN Grin

torquewench · 29/03/2021 21:24

Eh?

queenofthenorthwest · 29/03/2021 21:25

Is it because they are rowing opposite ways to each other?

You do realise in the UK the spelling is still arse no matter how you pronounce it. Ass is the American version.

WTF? West Midlands and its arse ! Arse arse arse . It's not the same as saying grass with a long 'a'.

Oooh, see we (as in my family and everyone I know) pronounce grass as in ass and bath as it’s spelt.... it seems to be just ass that is ‘arse’. Very strange now I think about it 🤔 I thought ‘ass’ was just an American thing. Or a donkey.

Definitely a ‘Mom’ household here Blush
