Ok the facts - one year old child, having nose bleeds, not particularly heavy.
Happening daily, occasionally every other day, two a day in the past two days. For seven weeks. Seven. Fever for the last three days. Blood in stool (both fresh and dark) yesterday.

Advice from (multiple) gp phone calls -

  • Go to a&e if nosebleeds last over 5 minutes (it doesn't)
  • Call back on Monday if there's still blood in her poo because it's probably from the nose bleeds
  • Watch and wait (they won't tell me how long) if the nose bleeds continue we might do some blood tests.

No one's looked up her nose, apart from me. No one's willing to see if she has an infection. They refuse to see us in person because it's "not necessary".

Seven weeks.. almost 50 days of bleeding, younger than two years old. Is that REALLY ok?

(If you know who I am(because you're family and I've been moaning to you about this) please just pretend you haven't also seen me moaning on Mumsnet too)

@ChipsCheeseAndBeans

I would make a private appointment to see a paediatric ENT surgeon. No need to be referred by doctor. Just for piece of mind.
I think a&e is the only place for peace of mind. If this is serious (and it's a big if, but if it is), then time is key. It may take time to get a ENT appointment and it may not be anything to do with ENT. A&E can deal with this now.
Arrowheart · 27/03/2021 21:32

@Staffy1

A&E will do blood tests and examine her. They won't send you away if it's not happening there and then. Definitely go, the GP is a disgrace if this has been going on for seven weeks.
And I agree, the gp has acted disgracefully here.
pregnantncnc · 27/03/2021 21:35

Take her to A&E. I would have massively kicked off if the GP refused to see us in person if I was worried about my child, even if it was "nothing".

FIL is a A&E paediatric consultant and always, always stresses that if you're worried AT ALL just take them to A&E. And if you feel like you're being brushed off, be persistent. He says any good doctor will listen to the mother if they say something is wrong; instinct often speaks louder than their symptoms.

loopyapp · 27/03/2021 21:35

I have a child that has or well had regular nose bleeds as a toddler. Honestly you can relax a little.

He has a mild issue with clotting so his would go on for a long time, he would have blood in his poo (younger kids swallow it a lot more).

After a year of them worsening to the extent he was needing treatment in a&e to stem the bleeds he was referred to ENT for a small op to seal off the leaky blood vessel.

At this point he was bleeding up to 30 mins at a time, needing an almost adult dose of anticoagulant to stop it and had a borderline platelet level. He was filling a cup every time, sometimes more.

Providing she has a healthy diet, is well hydrated and is bleeding less than half a cup each time and the flow stops under 10 mins it is more of an inconvenience than a concern.

As frustrating as it feels, certainly not something to insist on a face to face appointment for right now.

Might be worth asking for an ENT referal but I highly doubt they'll sedate her for something on the milder end of the scale.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 27/03/2021 21:36

I would also suggest A and E tomorrow. 111 in my experience are fecking useless with children.

If it helps though OP, I once posted on here about DS having worrying symptoms (not bleeding) and leukaemia was mentioned by several posters. They also said if you take them to A and E they WILL DEFINITELY do blood tests immediately...

They didn't! They did treat him for what they believed was wrong but when I asked if they could do a blood test to rule out Leukemia they looked at me as if I was deranged.

What I'm saying is don't let people on here/Google panic you. Just get her seen and put your trust in the doctors. Your GP has given advice but no harm in getting her seen face to face.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/03/2021 21:42

It's not ENT you need to see, it's paediatrics. The worry isn't the nose bleeds. The worry is that a child having nose bleeds and blood in their poo may have an illness that makes them bleed to easily. She needs checking out for an illness affecting her whole body, not just someone looking up her nose. And if your GP isn't happy to refer up to paeds, then you need to go to A&E.

Arrowheart · 27/03/2021 21:42

I really don't think they would have looked at any parent wondering about Leukaemia like they were deranged. I think they would have understood that a parent was worried.

None of my messages on here have been to scare or worry. I'm speaking from my personal experience. I never thought my child would be seriously ill. I actually apologised to the gp for asking for another check. I will never ever not get my child checked out after that. And if people look at me like I'm deranged then so what. I'd rather know what was wrong with my child than worry about how a dr or nurse would look at me.

Staffy1 · 27/03/2021 21:43

...But at the same time, ask anything you need to ask for peace of mind in A&E. I am one to always ask if they can definitely rule out worst case scenarios and if not, to test for them. I don't know if we just have a very good children's A&E, but mostly I have found them to be thorough and erring on the side of caution, and they never get upset if questioned.

Aabb57853379 · 27/03/2021 21:44

If you can spare the money I would just ring a private hospital and get seen by a paediatric consultant tomorrow or latest Monday (although not sure where you are located). Or you could sign up for an online private GP you can be seen by a GP online within the hour and have a private prescription sent to you via courier within a few hours. I also don’t know if private GPs are doing home visits at the moment. Failing all that, A&E tomorrow. With a child that age they will probably be fine to see you.

Parkerwhereareyou · 27/03/2021 21:44

Omg. This cannot be left. If your GP is like that then you need to be proactive. The worst (best) that can happen is that there's nothing wrong.

It's rubbish that they can't check her. Our GPs keep texting us to say we must not stay away and must contact them normally, and can come in.

Take her in tomorrow.

DrManhattan · 27/03/2021 21:46

I would be going to a and e now

Aabb57853379 · 27/03/2021 21:47

And just to echo PP don’t worry about being pushy - I usually research everything I think it could be / everything I think it could be and ask them to clinically rule them out and explain their reasoning. Couldn’t care less if this makes me a pain. A good professional never has a problem being questioned. Every time I have taken by DC to A&E they have been extremely thorough and professional.

pipsqueakbollock · 27/03/2021 21:47

I hope she's ok
I think your GP is very wrong here.
My son suffers migraines and after a bout of them in the run up to Christmas, the GP insisted he come in for a full check over and a referral to paediatrics.

In my mum mind, your DD situation is far more perplexing and unexplainable than my DS migraine clusters aged 9. Thanks

MrsEricBana · 27/03/2021 21:49

Ok well hopefully nothing sinister at all but OF COURSE they need to check her properly and you are 100% right to push for this OP. Hope it's all resolved soonFlowers

Toddlerteaplease · 27/03/2021 21:49

Paeds nurse here as well. I agree she needs to be fully checked out.

AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN · 27/03/2021 21:50

Not okay. I’d be taking them to A&E and not leaving until tests were carried out.

Valenciaoranges · 27/03/2021 21:50

Why on earth can’t the GP see your child? It’s getting beyond ridiculous that GPS still won’t see patients in the flesh.

icdtap · 27/03/2021 21:50

A and E.

Valenciaoranges · 27/03/2021 21:51

GPs and yes I know they work 12 hour days etc, but surely seeing a child is a priority?

WeeWelshWoman · 27/03/2021 21:53

Please, please take your kid to A&E. This is not normal.

3AndStopping · 27/03/2021 21:55

Shocking from the Dr. Hope she is ok OP Flowers

BungleandGeorge · 27/03/2021 21:56

Do you not have any walk in centres or minor ailments places near you? Are you in England? What GP out of hours service do you have?
Nosebleeds in children are really common and I was told that if they aren’t profuse and over 10 minutes on a regular basis they are very unlikely to be anything serious. They can tell a lot just from looking in the nose! I’m surprised the GP didn’t just give you an antibiotic cream to try. Obviously you have the additional symptoms of the blood from the back passage but again there are many simple explanations (such as constipation). I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions but yes your child does need to be examined to rule out anything serious and to give you some peace of mind. A&e if absolutely no other option

Ohpulltheotherone · 27/03/2021 21:56

I can’t believe some doctors are pulling this shit about not seeing people.

How dare they. The chances of you now passing on covid are so low. If they gave you an appointment then you could do a flipping lateral flow beforehand anyway.

I’m raging on your behalf and that of all the people who are having their treatments and referrals delayed further and further due to GPs refusing appointments.

I needed to get my pill prescription last week, I rang and they gave me an appointment for that evening to have bp taken as she couldn’t give me the prescription without it apparently.

I was in and out in 5 minutes, all secure and perfectly safe for both of us.
I am lucky, I’ve seen the nurser for a smear in last lockdown too. My surgery are clearly using common sense. Not all are.

Hope you get this sorted. Complain to the practice manager too, when you get the outcomes.
Also, change your practice when you can - to one with much better patient care reviews.

3AndStopping · 27/03/2021 21:57

advice: See a GP if:
a child under 2 years old has a nosebleed

This is literally the first thing on nosebleeds on the NHS website.

ExpulsoCorona · 27/03/2021 21:58

GP here - go to A&E now OP. Don't call 111 or wait for a GP appointment, your child needs blood tests and an examination. Your GP could do an examination but can't do the blood tests, they will have you refer for these and that will delay things.
