Ok the facts - one year old child, having nose bleeds, not particularly heavy.
Happening daily, occasionally every other day, two a day in the past two days. For seven weeks. Seven. Fever for the last three days. Blood in stool (both fresh and dark) yesterday.

Advice from (multiple) gp phone calls -

  • Go to a&e if nosebleeds last over 5 minutes (it doesn't)
  • Call back on Monday if there's still blood in her poo because it's probably from the nose bleeds
  • Watch and wait (they won't tell me how long) if the nose bleeds continue we might do some blood tests.

No one's looked up her nose, apart from me. No one's willing to see if she has an infection. They refuse to see us in person because it's "not necessary".

Seven weeks.. almost 50 days of bleeding, younger than two years old. Is that REALLY ok?

(If you know who I am(because you're family and I've been moaning to you about this) please just pretend you haven't also seen me moaning on Mumsnet too)

Are you in London? There’s a walk in ambulatory service for children which is a walk in to see a paediatric doctor. It’s basically part of Hammersmith hospital.

IncredibleMatt · 27/03/2021 20:21

It’s only open Monday to Friday though.

feellikeanalien · 27/03/2021 20:22

Does your local hospital have a specific children's A&E department? Ours has and I've taken DD there a couple of times as doctors face to face appointments are like hens teeth. They will look at her. This does not sound right.

It's awful trying to access medical care for non-covid conditions. I have had a wheezy chest for six months. It was only because I suggested to the GP that maybe it would be a good idea to have a chest x-ray that I actually got sent for one. When DP was in the last stages of cancer I was actually arguing with the 999 call handler and only because I insisted did a paramedic call me back. They then came out immediately. Don't feel bad about going to A&E. If it was made easier to access GP care people wouldn't have to.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/03/2021 20:23

Yep, I'd let her sleep tonight too & take her to A&E in the morning.

Hope she's ok xx

fallfallfall · 27/03/2021 20:44

@swiggless, a lot better to realize it could be this serious vs a relaxed “oh ya be seen”, likewise mentioning this to the Dr. can prompt an overtired doc to order the extra blood tests.

swiggless · 27/03/2021 20:47

@fallfallfall do you not think that a doctor would know the signs and test if necessary? This would be my worry too (the disease) but do you think op needs to hear it right now when it could just be something minor(which it hopefully is)?

Freddiefox · 27/03/2021 20:47

I’d also change doctors if you can

SecondaryCalling · 27/03/2021 20:53

Definitely A&E. As previously mentioned a paeds A&E doctor would much rather you brought them in and they were fine, than you didn't present. It isn't usual, and definitely needs investigation. It could be something or nothing, sincerely hope it's the latter x

fallfallfall · 27/03/2021 20:53

@swiggless, her own family dr. seems to have missed the boat on this. so the possibility is good another might as well. they are overtired and if you go to a general a&e you might end up seeing an intern, resident or even a locum who's background is not ped's.

Arrowheart · 27/03/2021 20:54

A&E is the only option. You have to go.

Arrowheart · 27/03/2021 20:57

My son had nosebleeds at 3 and bruising and it was Leukaemia. You need to get your child checked out. It will more than likely not be serious but you have to at least get it checked. I'm not saying this to scare you, I'm saying this so that you can go and get some peace of mind.

zzizzer · 27/03/2021 20:57

I had bad frequent nose bleeds when I was young and remember getting my nose cauterised several times in A and E. I don't know if they'd do that for a toddler, but it stopped it happening for a few weeks at a time for me which was a huge relief.

So I'm another one voting for A and E.

MySocalledLoaf · 27/03/2021 20:59

This has been normal for my son since one year old (he seems to have a blood vessel in an unlucky place) and his analyses came back normal. So while it does seem worthy of a check up please don’t worry about it unduly on your way.

Cinderellashoes · 27/03/2021 21:00

Does she have any bruising anywhere else?

Any pains that she complains of?

How is her apetite? Is her tummy looking normal?

Is she more tired than usual or about the same?

saraclara · 27/03/2021 21:03

@Notokanymore

Our only options in this area are A&e and gp. I spoke to 111 when I freaked out about the blood in her poo, they contacted the gp and said she needed to be physically examined. The gp rang and refused.

If I turn up at a&e I'm worried they'll say if she's not bleeding at that exact moment in time they won't see her.

Call 111 tomorrow and explain that your GP refused to do what they asked, and ask what you should do now.
nocoolnamesleft · 27/03/2021 21:06

Needs seeing. Needs bloods doing. This weekend.

doublehalo · 27/03/2021 21:08

Blood that has been swallowed and passed through is black. If it's blood coloured it's come from somewhere nearer the exit.

TokyoSushi · 27/03/2021 21:08

Yes agree, time for A&E, sending get well wishes Flowers

garbagetruck · 27/03/2021 21:12

A+E, hope everything is ok

Namechange1991x · 27/03/2021 21:14

I agree with a&e.
It's shameful that GPs won't see patients. There is more going on that covid.

Feelingconfused2020 · 27/03/2021 21:15

Call 111 tomorrow and explain that your GP refused to do what they asked, and ask what you should do now I'd do this.

Eckhart · 27/03/2021 21:21

@ParadiseIsland

I assume you mean red blood in the stool. This can’t be from the nose bleed. The blood would have been ‘digested’ and at least turned black.

I’d go to A&E. if he GP refuses to see you.

Yeah, this. Blood doesn't come out red in the stools unless it's coming from quite low down in the digestive tract. If your doctor thinks it does, you need a new doctor.

It may well be something innocuous, but get this checked at A&E, to be sure.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 27/03/2021 21:22

Turn up at A&E and if they get funny about it tell them her GP has refused to see her. They don't like that at all.

ChipsCheeseAndBeans · 27/03/2021 21:28

I would make a private appointment to see a paediatric ENT surgeon. No need to be referred by doctor. Just for piece of mind.

Staffy1 · 27/03/2021 21:30

A&E will do blood tests and examine her. They won't send you away if it's not happening there and then. Definitely go, the GP is a disgrace if this has been going on for seven weeks.
