‘D’H has announced that Covid doesn’t exist.

Name changed for this.

One year since lockdown 1 began and DH has announced that Covid does not exist.

The illness is ‘no different to flu’, he is not having the vaccine because ‘he doesn’t need to’ and if he falls ill with any symptoms listed as Covid he will not be taking a test and will phone in sick with backache or some such nonsense.

AIBU to think WTF?
Apparently he has thought this all along and decided to let us know as he is sick of ‘having his freedom taken away from him’.

What started as a chat about weekly testing ended up with this.

I don’t know what to do with this information. All year (pre. weekly testing /vaccine rollout) he’s just gone along with it all.

So, along with AIBU to think he has lost his mind, WWYD or say in this situation?

just "The travel restrictions have not been for a solid twelve months, they have waxed and waned dependent on the circumstances at the time, he could have seen them last summer ffs."

Hello!

They might be in one of those local lockdown areas who have been subject to travel restrictions the whole year.

No. Tier restrictions stayed put where we live. (ffs).
We don’t live in Cornwall or London.

@RootyT00t

Well, *@FlyingBurrito*, I think we can assume that if people go from being intelligent and switched on and all round good people to being Covid deniers (odd behaviour), mental health is involved.

So I wouldn't write them off and decide they are no longer those things.

It's not an assumption I would make but we're all different.

We're in unique situation where this subject by definition has never come up before so who can say whether a person's view has been informed by mental health problems.

noirchatsdeux · 27/03/2021 13:42

@OutOfLine I've been part of NHS clinical trials for numerous medications etc for nearly 30 years.

He's still talking utter shit.

Yes. I know.

There is absolutely loads of reputable information about why the vaccine trials were able to be done more quickly

This is what I told him.

That's fair enough, @FlyingBurrito

Have you actually said what his academic qualifications are OP? I'm trying to work so I'm not able to read the whole lengthy thread at this point. Has your DH invented his own facts re his academic qualifications in the same way as he's invented his 'covid facts'? He's obviously got some health anxiety re vaccinations that he's unable to deal with but denying reality is not the way to go, sadly.

optimistic40 · 27/03/2021 13:45

If he is complying then I can't really see the problem. He is allowed his opinion, even if he is wrong. Perhaps he will want the vaccine if travel plans depend on it...

Parkerwhereareyou · 27/03/2021 13:47

You could say 'aw, baby, that's great - when we all go off on a fab holiday to somewhere beautiful, you can stay at home and feed the dog/put out the bins/jet wash the driveway, because obviously you won't have a vaccine passport so you'll be grounded for the rest of your life (which might not be too long though as you might catch that 'flu' and die).' ?

It’s irrelevant really. I was just making the point that he’s very well qualified academically- obviously specific to his line of work. Needless to say his qualifications are not in Science or medicine. 😅

@OutOfLine

I tried to reason with him.

We have vaccines for all sorts of diseases. We have medical tests for all sorts of conditions.
He can’t get past the fact that this vaccine hasn’t been trialled.

Well... did you try to reason with him? Or did you tell him that you were right, and that you can assure him that the vaccine is completely safe, having been tested - but not in the extensive way that a vaccine normally would be?

I suspect that he doesn't necessarily believe that it's just the same as flu - but he's sick and tired of people banging on as if Covid were the only disease in the world, and is equally sick of having lost his freedom for no evident reason. Perhaps if you were a bit more understanding of this view, he might be a bit less strident in turn?

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 27/03/2021 13:50

@iklboo

He also says that the vaccine is designed to kill everyone.

Where do they get this shit from?!

Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but I heard there's pig DNA in the vaccine and we will all become part pig and at that point they government can legally kill us.

I'd laugh more if it wasn't for the fact these people are dangerous.

I suppose you’re right. One thing that threw me was that he said he would get tested if he showed symptoms.

And are you saying that vaccine passports are a good idea? Or are pregnant women, for instance, to expect a pat on the head and be told to enjoy feeding the dog and putting the bins out while their OH has a nice holiday?
lovemyflipflops · 27/03/2021 13:52

show him the Kate Garraway documentary

Aha, he has one of the modern degrees in shoelace tying. Say no more. I hope he doesn't work in any role requiring common sense or taking responsibility for anything other than tying his own shoe laces!!! Give me an non academic who doesn't shirk personal responsibility and actually has a functioning brain any day. Good luck with your DH. You'll need it 🤣

Happymum12345 · 27/03/2021 13:55

My best friend has gone down this path, but I don’t have to live with her! It’s hard, but the only way ive managed to try to keep our friendship is by simply not talking about it and changing the subject. She is an intelligent women, but believes the conspiracy theories.

So if a qualification is not in Science or medicine it is in ‘shoe lace tying’ ?
Don’t be ridiculous!
You sound more barmy than my DH!
