To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?

Inspired shamelessly by a thread I just read BUT if painting whole houses grey (I am almost guilty of doing planning this) will soon be out of fashion, much as white and before that, magnolia - what do you think the new grey will be?!

I have over half a house left to paint but zero artistic flare! If I'm left to my own devices it will all go grey as I like my calm grey kitchen and living room. Now I think I may need saving from myself!

Help Mumsnet?!

I really hate this slavish devotion to rubbishing a decorating trend as it smacks of snobbery.
All this 'grey is sooo dated' nonsense makes me laugh
But the recent obsession with grey everything is going to date, just like avocado bathrooms dated, just like the peach and stencilling a PP mentioned ended up dated. It's not snobbery. It's true. Once a trend gets too big and has picked up lots of people jumping on the bandwagon to have 'in' decorating it peaks and then declines.

I've got a grey lounge and I love it. It was grey before this everything grey/grey velvet/sparkles and grey trend turned up and it will remain grey after it's gone, because I like it, and the room has never looked like I bought half The Range trying to copy something I saw on Instagram.

If people picked their decor because they love the colours as opposed to trying to recreate whatever is 'in' then they'd probably not have rooms that date as much.

Have a look at McGee and co if you want inspiration, they do the ‘natural tones’ look really well

cardibach · 26/03/2021 22:07

I don’t care. My house doesn’t get decorated often (and by that I mean 10 years minimum for a room) as it doesn’t need it. The old paint doesn’t get damaged. I paint colours I like and to hell with what other people think is ‘on trend’. Load of nonsense.
Mind you, I also dress for my shape and what I like, so...

All hail Cardibach, the only individual among a world of mindless clones.

🙄

I love colour after years in magnolia rental properties. My lounge is navy and dark red, kitchen sage green, bathroom dark green, bedroom purple, spare room bright yellow, kids room has one wall each of pink, blue, yellow and green, and the hallways are dusky pink. Sounds awful but it makes me happy!

Like most of us then.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 26/03/2021 22:17

I do think bold colours in general are "in" though and I'm sure I'll be very old fashioned soon.

So why open a thread about it,,🤦🏻‍♀️
missymousey · 26/03/2021 22:20

Since we can't actually go anywhere, I'm heading for full-on backpacker decor: Moroccan lanterns, kilim rugs, throws with bits of mirror glass sewn in. And sunshine yellow walls. I don't care if it's not in, I need it!

ForeverInADay · 26/03/2021 22:21

Some lovely ideas.

For those asking why I don't just go with what I like, I think that's my issue, I don't really know what I want! I find visualising the end look very hard.

I look at Pinterest...a lot!

I have form for bad paint choices. I painted a wall in my first flat gold. Badly. It was so thick! Had to get it actually sanded off the walls years later and I can't even say I particularly liked it from the day I painted it on!!

Grey was more of an easy fall back for me as I definitely need a calm feeling but secretly crave that whilst having a room that is at least slightly interesting. I don't mind not being trendy at all but am bad at picking something even from pictures that actually suits the room I'm painting and looks good!

I'm currently googling the many amazing sounding suggestions on this thread! Smile

So why open a thread about it
I’m allowed to be interested in what other people do, right?
So much anger from a lot of you for someone who just gave an opinion on an opinion board.
No, I don’t think I’m the only one, either for house or clothes. Clearly a significant number do care about fashion though or it wouldn’t exist 🤨
Also, I’m pretty sure several other people have said this.
Why the attack?

RingtheBells · 26/03/2021 22:23

I like magnolia, all our wood is magnolia because I like it, I particularly don't like white paintwork

cardibach · 26/03/2021 22:23

Like most of us then.

Like I said in my other post, no, not most of us. If most of us didn’t follow fashion, fashion wouldn’t be a thing. I was just making a connection between not caring what someone (who?) says is in trend with my house and generally not being bothered. No suggestion that was superior. That assumption comes from you.
MinnieMous3 · 26/03/2021 22:24

@cardibach why are you interested in what other people do? You sound like you should be swanning about living your best unique life, in clothes that suit you.

While the rest of us agonise over whether to switch our crushed velvet sofas for something in deep teal velvet, and swipe on Pinterest until our eyes go bloodshot.

RingtheBells · 26/03/2021 22:24

I don't like magnolia on walls though just the doors and skirtings

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 26/03/2021 22:25

Who said anything about anyone being superior? You’re putting words in my mouth. You said you dress for your shape. I said most of us do. As that’s my experience. I don’t personally know anyone who slavishly follows fashion. Everyone I know chooses clothes that suit them. That’s all i said.

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2021 22:25

This actually made me laugh out loud. Post of the day. 😂😂😂

JustNotFunAnymore · 26/03/2021 22:27

I dunno. We had a grey bedroom before it was 'in' I love it.

justasking111 · 26/03/2021 22:29

Had duck egg for sitting room a few years ago. Having dogs means throws on two sofas and armchair. Found teal ones in B&M the other week so have lifted the room that way. They have lots of teal items which I like also mustard items which I hate

RingtheBells · 26/03/2021 22:29

Most people probably choose what they like and at some stage they will be 'in'

lightweight, i have been decorating my hall for about 11 years!
GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/03/2021 22:30

I'm going back to read the whole thread but probably teal/dark green/ pale pink and natural/wicker accessories. Dark green walls seem to be the new navy. I'm not massively keen on either - the furthest I'll go is a sort of mid-tone like chalky teal!

I heard naturals/beige/taupe is supposed to be the next big thing with dark green accents (e.g. houseplants), faded brick red and more wicker/pampas type accessories oh and brown! It's giving me flashbacks to the 90s but I suppose there'll be a new slant on it.

tara66 · 26/03/2021 22:31

Off whites.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 26/03/2021 22:31

My paint definitely does get damaged though. I have 3 young children and a dog. They’re grubby.

Serin · 26/03/2021 22:33

We had a grey a few years back, then we were persuaded to go navy blue by our kids. They are now in the process of painting everything white, with housepalnts every where (that they dont bother to look after).

A plantation bllind (oak) has been ordered for the dining room, we have textured rugs, wicker and.......Macrame Grin, they definitely think that they invented macrame!!
