(Entirely light-hearted and for entertainment purposes only, couldn't actually care less and have no aspirations of posh!)

Inspired by the other posh thread, and FYI ferrero rocher are still posh enough to make me feel somewhat inadequate.

Ah, but this is where it gets confusing.

Lots of upper middle class people shop at Aldi.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/03/2021 11:05

I think different branches of the same store probably have different levels of 'poshness', depending on area and local competition.

I think my local Tesco has gone a bit downmarket recently in terms of stock and choice. I assume that that is because its nearest competitors used to be a Co-op and a Gateway but are now an M&S and a Waitrose.

callmeH · 26/03/2021 11:16

@Xiaoxiong

Can I add Whole Foods above Waitrose but below Harrods and Fortnums. There's also Harvey Nicks food hall...Selfridges too...
Love Whole Foods but only used them in the US! Believe it or not but a couple of years ago someone was actually commenting on the carrier bags people in a group had brought to a picnic, smirking at her Waitrose and sneering at my 'unbranded bags'. Oh, and where are those from dear? Whole Foods, I think they're only on Ken High Street and Cheltenham! The group collapsed in laughter and she shut up for the rest of the afternoon! I didn't tell her that mine were from Santa Fe.
Confusedandshaken · 26/03/2021 11:31

I think Morrison's is so underrated. It's definitely one of the cheaper supermarkets and it isn't marketed as posh but for a proper cook who makes things from scratch the range of ingredients (fresh and dry goods) is so much better in terms of choice and quality than any other supermarket. The others have shelves and shelves of ready meals but a lot less you can actually cook with.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 11:32

I agree. I really like shopping there.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/03/2021 11:34

lidl and aldi are level. and posher than farmfoods.
order of supermarkets, least posh to greatest posh: asda, morrisons, tesco, sainsbury's. sainsbury's is definitely posher.

the rest nnot a clue about.

grafittiartist · 26/03/2021 11:39

Only one mention in here for the mighty Heron!!
And I am still sad for the loss of Fultons Smile

@FelicityBeedle

I live in the north west but a bit of a trek from booths. I recommend lakes holidays just as an excuse to go to booths, it’s lovely!
Ah, I was on a caravan holiday in the Lakes a couple of years ago, and we needed some basic provisions. Spotted a Booths in Keswick, assumed it was a normal supermarket and went in. Couldn’t get anything ‘normal’ or basic there so had very posh breakfasts and lunches for the remainder of the holiday!

Lovely shop though.

pickingdaisies · 26/03/2021 12:01

... only in the North so less posh
Has Harrogate been informed they aren't posh? Any volunteers to pop over and tell them? Be gentle.

Ah yes, Heron Foods. The B&M food shop.
The last time I went in they only had generic bird food.

And drop in to Tebay services on the M6 on the way to tell them they're not posh either.
Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 12:14

😆😆 at the idea that there aren’t posh people/places in the north...

muddyford · 26/03/2021 12:18

Level 1 Iceland and farmfoods
Level 2 Asda, Aldi, Lidl
Level 3 Morrisons, Tesco
Level 4 Sainsbury's
Level 5 Waitrose, M&S
Level 6 Booth's

The rest aren't really supermarkets.

Highforareason · 26/03/2021 12:20

The Lidl in Knaresborough is quite fancy ........up North

greycloudysky · 26/03/2021 12:21

I really like Morrisons. I think it depends where you live. For me, Asda is at the bottom, then Tesco, then Iceland, then Aldi/Lidl, then Sainsburys, then Morrisons, then Waitrose.

I've tried them all over the years for delivery and Tesco has the WORST customer service of any shop I've been to. Asda has the worst quality food. Sainsbury is expensive for what it is. Morrisons has excellent customer service and decent quality. Waitrose is good quality/also good customer service.

Highforareason · 26/03/2021 12:24

Should add as well over the lockdown Lidl had the vast majority of our money, and now they have brought out the app I have had quite a few £10 off vouchers, well done them for the introduction of the Lidl app.

Unlike what I think the Tesco double pricing with the Tesco clubcard, rip off is.

LaceyBetty · 26/03/2021 12:25

Interesting. I'd have put ASDA above Morrison's in poshness but maybe that is because our local Morrison's is dire.

londonrach · 26/03/2021 12:31

Lidl is higher than aldi. I put sainsbury below morrisons and tesco. Asda below them. I think it depends on what your local shop looks like. We new posh morrisons..

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 12:33

In my experience ASDA is pretty awful in terms of quality and especially in terms of variety of foods.

I’d rather shop in a tired old Morrison’s supermarket than a brand spanking new ASDA, no question about it.

Bbee29 · 26/03/2021 12:36

I would put Tesco above Morrison’s! Asda, Morrison’s, Tesco, Sainsburys for me!

MiddlesexGirl · 26/03/2021 12:47

Iceland
Aldi
Lidl
Morrisons
Asda
Sainsburys
Tesco
Waitrose
M&S

Don't have the others anywhere near here.

CleverCatty · 26/03/2021 12:50

the ASDA's I've been to locally (which aren't that near) - they're ok for the odd item, clothes not bad and depending what prepacked food you buy they're ok, but the meat (chicken etc especially) you really need to watch what you buy, I've seen stuff that looks distinctly off etc or going off.

Therefore, I tend to use Tescos/Sainsburys more.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 12:52

Yes I had to stop buying their chicken, when I did go there, because most of the time it was pretty grim.

They did have a good ‘world foods’ section though, especially for the kind of food we like to cook.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 12:54

I’m not dissing all of their products/produce, btw. Like you said, some things were pretty good. We found their ready meal curries to be of pretty good quality and not too bad for the price, for example. But I just wouldn’t go out of my way to shop there - the only reason we did at times was because it was the closest one we could walk to.
