(Entirely light-hearted and for entertainment purposes only, couldn't actually care less and have no aspirations of posh!)

Inspired by the other posh thread, and FYI ferrero rocher are still posh enough to make me feel somewhat inadequate.

F&M only keep top spot because of their Christmas hampers.

I’ve always thought that Sainsbury’s was the poshest of the normal supermarkets. As a kid shopping in Sainsbury’s was a luxury only surpassed by M & S (we’d never heard of Waitrose back then and the nearest is still about 30 miles away).

Anyone remember Kwik Save?

FelicityBeedle · 25/03/2021 23:55

I used to work at a Waitrose, I did the reductions. It was in a student area and the fights between the students and the wonderfully middle class types for the cheap sandwiches were something to behold

Codswallop20 · 25/03/2021 23:58

Also surprised at the downgrade of Morrison's. My supermarket of choice as they actually have proper butchers, bakers and fishmongers whereas many others sell frozen defrosted fish eg. Sainsbury's, and I also think their own brand generics are better.

I actually used to really love Iceland as they are ethical and had some lovely stuff, but I think their advertising spoiled it for me!

I would swap tesco and Morrison's and put lidl and Aldi on a par. This would be above iceland and farm foods as although they are lower cost, the interesting ranges and good wines lend them.a certain cachet

I remember walking home carrying the bags of shopping from Kwik save and eating no frills crisps. And not eating them at school for fear of reprisals from people who I would eat for breakfast now!

My list would be Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tescos, Morrisons, Asda, Lidl, Aldi, Farmfoods. M&S isn't a grocery shop in my mind, it's for weird and wonderful treats. Tescos remain my old favourite.

Yes, I do! 'No Frills' Grin
PrincessPea11 · 26/03/2021 00:05

Yes, we even had a kwik save no frills cook book!

Where would Netto go on the list? Eating netto food for lunch was real social suicide at my school, I found out the hard way!

DoubleTweenQueen · 26/03/2021 00:05

I remember Kwick Save! Deffo not posh :)

JayDot500 · 26/03/2021 00:07

Morrison's and Asda are on the same level imo.

I agree that Aldi is rated higher than Lidl.

Tesco is a tad below Sainsbury's.

Farmer's markets are on par with M&S.

I like Iceland as I'm always pleasantly surprised at some products (3 x packs of jumbo shelled raw prawns for a tenner!).

littlewhitestar · 26/03/2021 00:08

If F&M and Harrods make the list, then Wholefoods Market and Planet Organic probably need to go on the list, probably above Waitrose/Booths. Then Partridges above them, maybe even above Harrods as they have a Royal Warrant and Harrods lost their warrant and Harrods is a bit tacky and déclassé.

But that's all a bit Londoncentric.

Superstardjs · 26/03/2021 00:09

Tesco is not on a par with Sainsbury's. Tesco is scabby and more like Aldi but with no checkout chucking. So: other shops, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, and so on. I have never been to a Booth's, feel like am missing out.

Staffy1 · 26/03/2021 00:09

Sainsbury's likes to think it's posh. It's really just a Mrs Bucket.

CounsellorTroi · 26/03/2021 00:10

I bought some bog roll from Waitrose and it said "suitable for septic tanks" on the packaging. Says it all IMO.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/03/2021 00:11

Tesco well below sainsburys and so is morrisons, its between asda and tesco.

Booths is well above Waitrose.

I'd use something like a ready meal curry to rank them but waitrose ready meals are a bit shit so would reduce it below sainsburys.

They do nice pizzas and pies though.

Yup, this too nearly finished me off! Netto carrier bags were NEVER to be used at school.

Waitrose wishes it was Booth’s!

Booths is amazing. We don't have one but we have some lovely mates who do and I was SO jealous when they took us, really lovely. I would be even more skint if we had one locally and the lockdown chub would be even more pronounced Blush

@Camomila

I would put aldi and lidl in tier 2, iceland and farm foods in tier 1.

Next tier Asda and Morissons, then Sainsbury's and Tesco together.

Also need a farmers market/organic veg van tier

Totally agree with this tier system although our local big Sainsburys slightly edges ahead of our big Tesco
WaxOnFeckOff · 26/03/2021 00:17

To be honest Booths features probably too much in our holiday decisions to go to the Lakes. It's my happy place.

Handsnotwands · 26/03/2021 00:18

See I wouldn’t dream of setting foot in a Tesco but am an enthusiastic recent convert to Morrison’s (v good fish, cheese and chocolate covered Belgian waffles)

*demographic - market town with only a Waitrose within walking distance . Aldi / lidl / sainsbo a good 30 minute drive away. Never seen an Iceland.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/03/2021 00:18

I think my ranks are more to do with what I feel the quality of the food is rather than the supermarket poshness in itself.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/03/2021 00:19

Just putting this one out there......

Spar.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/03/2021 00:19

Corner shops IMO rank above a lot because in London they have fancy forrin stuff you can't get in other places. Also personalised service. They remember my name and how much wine I buy unfortunately.

Aldi and Lidl are the same rank.
