(Entirely light-hearted and for entertainment purposes only, couldn't actually care less and have no aspirations of posh!)

Inspired by the other posh thread, and FYI ferrero rocher are still posh enough to make me feel somewhat inadequate.

Lidl is far nicer than Iceland and has a bakery unlike Aldi. Asda not as nice as Morrison's which is equal to Tesco. Sainsbury's is more expensive but not posher! Waitrose however is posh

minniemoocher · 26/03/2021 12:56

I think it depends where you are though, our lidl is as nice as our Sainsbury's

Susie477 · 26/03/2021 12:58

1, Iceland, Farm foods (this is an assumption on my part, as I have never shopped at Farm foods)

2, Aldi, Asda.

3, Lidl, Morrisons, Co-op.

4, Tesco, Sainsbury’s

5, M&S

6, Waitrose, Booths

7, Farmers’ markets, posh farm shops.

Harrods is a department store and Fortnum’s is a tourist trap.

Oooohbehave · 26/03/2021 13:02

Iceland and farm foods should be in level 1 and then lidl, Aldi and Asda tier 2. Sainsburys, Morrison and Tesco tier 3. Asda IMO is the least posh and worse quality than Aldi and Lidl but many won't agree.

Twobrews · 26/03/2021 13:08

I forgot to add Iceland on my list. Ours used to terrible on a par with Farm Foods and Asda. Then it changed to a big Food Warehouse thing, I'd say it's now more on a par with the fancy Aldi or big Tesco.

Twobrews · 26/03/2021 13:15

I also forgot M&S. How could I? It's number one in my town, except the chicken which is horrible.

We don't have a Waitrose, I used to go to the one in the nearest city quite frequently. The meat on the butcher counter was always drying up. Good range of products though.

I've never even seen a Booths!

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 26/03/2021 13:24

I don't think any of them are 'posh'.

I just go wherever I happen to me/most continent at that time.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 26/03/2021 13:24

Be not me.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 26/03/2021 13:24

I also meant convenient. Typos are doing me in today.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 26/03/2021 13:25

I don't get the 'Waitrose is posh' idea. Our local Waitrose is where old people shop.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 26/03/2021 13:26

I do like Booths, but as far as I know they aren't in the south.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 13:29

I think the ‘posh’ thing is tongue in cheek.

Lincslady53 · 26/03/2021 13:32

Booths is still owned and managed by the original family. Their cheese counter is superb. Whilst they are a bit pricy, they have some good prices in offers, they also have an excellent butchery counter. They are big supporters of local (Lancastrian) suppliers, so you can get local strawberries straight from the farm in season, salt marsh lamb, and locally baked goods. Our regular shopping park has a Booths, an Aldi and a B and M Bargains, so we can pick up the bulk regular stuff from Aldi, then into Booths for the special s.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 13:36

I’ve never visited a Booths store, but as I understand it, it actually is rather posh.

I expect I’d love to shop there - when people describe it I always think it sounds right up my street. And I love cheese. Wink

bananapumpkin · 26/03/2021 13:38

I don't understand all the love for Booths on this thread!

We normally shop in Waitrose and I was so excited to visit Booths when we went on holiday to the Lakes, but it was a massive disappointment. Some of the shops are lovely (others less so) but the food itself was mediocre. Nice brands cost a lot more than at Waitrose, there is far less choice and the own brand wasn't great quality. The bakery products were beautifully displayed and looked incredible but didn't taste good (couldn't even finish the chocolate cookie, which must be a first for me).

To give them their due, the deli counter was excellent and we had a really fantastic picnic lunch from there. But I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.

irregularegular · 26/03/2021 13:39

Most posh is farm shops, organic veg box deliveries etc.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 13:40

I don’t think I’d do a full shop there...I’d go for the delicious extras!

irregularegular · 26/03/2021 13:40

I used to think M&S was relatively posh, but having recently suffered the Ocado switch from Waitrose to M&S it is nowhere near in the same league. Sainsbury's would probably be better. The cheese selection in particular is dire!

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 13:42

Oh well I’m very posh then! We get all our meat from our local farm shop since we moved to be a bit more rural and we get organic veg delivered...

(I’m not from the UK so poshness doesn’t actually factor for me...)

thecatsthecats · 26/03/2021 13:42

Booths is a cut above Waitrose. Waitrose has cheapy "essentials" range, even if it does have asparagus in it. Booths wouldn't stoop to that. Nor would they stoop to an "express" store.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 13:45

I was never very impressed with Waitrose, didn’t generally feel their food was worth what you paid for it, although the meat was good in my experience. I like the feel of shopping there, though. And the drinks selection is quite good. The ready made food products weren’t great and I much preferred M&S for that.

thecatsthecats · 26/03/2021 13:45

Posted too soon - my point being is that posh shops doesn't mean that everything is BETTER, just that it's not lowest common denominator appeal that matters.

(which is also why Lidl attracts more posh people in my suburb than Asda in spite of both being cheap - people go there for the nice continental cheese, not for choice because they need the cheap options)

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/03/2021 13:46

A few years ago I worked in a rather grotty area of east London - thinking it would be easy to pop in on my way home, I gave it a try; I think it was before I had a tesco close to home.
Different world to tesco's I was used to - a sea of red and blue stripes of their economy range.
I'd imagine Lidl/Aldi are bog standard everywhere, but most of the others will vary according to the demographic of the local community.

Close to me in descending order
M&S/Waitrose/Tesco/Sainsbury/Morrison/Asda/Aldi/Lidl/Local Market
But even within those, stores within walking distance vary considerably; and each has particular items that I like to get from them; except Asda maybe.

Selfridge's food hall is amazing - but special treats rather than 'supermarket' - ditto F&M & Harrods.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/03/2021 13:48

& Co-op - their branches are even more diverse, but possibly between Waitrose and Tesco.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 13:48

Yes that’s true.

I’m not sniffy about where I shop or whether it’s cheap or not - who doesn’t like to save money where they can? But i want to eat good food.

And now I’m hungry! Grin
