(Entirely light-hearted and for entertainment purposes only, couldn't actually care less and have no aspirations of posh!)

Inspired by the other posh thread, and FYI ferrero rocher are still posh enough to make me feel somewhat inadequate.

LakieLady · 26/03/2021 08:42

I think of Lidl as being slightly posher than Aldi, because of their fabulous patisserie.

UserTwice · 26/03/2021 08:46

I expect some of this is based on people's own local shops.

M&S and Waitrose are definitely "posh" - to this day my parents have never bought food from either as "not for the likes of us".

I'd put Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons on a level with Asda definitely below (though this is definitely a local thing; the Asda is situated in a poorer neighbourhood).

I'd like to put Aldi and Lidl on a par but our local Aldi is miles nicer than our local Lidl. However, I've been to Lidls that are much better.

Where does the local corner shop fit in this list? Ours tries to cater for all people and probably spans the whole range :)

DoubleTweenQueen · 26/03/2021 08:49

It's kind of irrelevant, really, as most of us shop wherever is convenient and has the most stuff that we usually buy.

ILoveShula · 26/03/2021 08:50

I shop at all those apart from farmfoods, Asda, Morrisons, Booths and Harrods as there aren't any locally.

I used to think Iceland was beneath me until the first lockdown, but I needed eggs, and I have been shopping there for some things since.

MummyJ12 · 26/03/2021 08:50

@BehindMyEyes

Waitrose M and S Sainsburys Tesco and Morrisons Asda Aldi Lidl
Totally agree with this, apart from I’d say Waitrose and M&S are on par. Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nicks food halls are in different league. (Personalised Nutella, 2 chocolates for fifty quid kinda places Grin)
Norwaydidnthappen · 26/03/2021 08:51

I disagree, I think aldi and Lidl are quite middle class- they are where I live in anyway... Asda, Iceland and farmfoods are at the bottom of the pile for me.

I’ll start from least to most posh:
Farmfoods
Iceland
Asda
Aldi
Lidl
Tesco
Morrisons
Sainsbury’s
Waitrose
M&S

I’ve never been to the others so can’t comment!

DoubleTweenQueen · 26/03/2021 08:52

Although I do actually know someone who excused himself for being encountered outside Tesco - "oh, of course we don't usually shop here, but we were desperate for such & such".
Do you know any supermarket snobs? :)

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 26/03/2021 08:52

Iceland and Asda are absolute bottom (never heard of Farmfoods so can’t comment). Lidl and Aldi may be cheap but they attract a broad demographic and are a mile above Iceland/ Asda!!!!

DoubleTweenQueen · 26/03/2021 08:54

Do you know folk who judge others for where they shop? I would guess - yes :)
I know I do. They're not generally my friends though.

DoubleTweenQueen · 26/03/2021 08:55

I mean, I know people who judge, not that I judge.

ILoveShula · 26/03/2021 08:55

The order of 'poshness' is probably OK, but i'd shift Lidl and Aldi up, and put M&S on the same level as Waitrose.

fizzpopbang · 26/03/2021 09:00

Hmm,

Farm foods
Iceland
Tesco
Lidl
Asda
Morrison's
Aldi
Sainsbury's
Waitrose
Harrods
Fortnums...

Highforareason · 26/03/2021 09:00

I have just ordered food from Fortbum and Mason for Easter gifts, but have quite happily bought my main shopping from our local Lidl, excellent staff, and they have some great wine offers (not the glugging £2.99 bottles IYKWIM).

It does depend on the stores themselves, my nearest Asda is vile, dirty crowded, surly staff, more or less the same with Tescos, but Sainsburys is clean fresh and bright, M&S is not half as good as it used to be, and Waitrose, well I am glad I live far far away from one now, used to cost me a fortune, so my list would be all over the place!

borntobequiet · 26/03/2021 09:01

I shop on my way home from work, and in my two local towns at weekends. Therefore I use Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Tesco, Budgens, Morrison’s (two branches) and Asda on a regular basis. They’re all good for different things and so in my mind equivalent. The Morrison’s have different vibes, one is bigger and better than the other. But the smaller one is quicker to get around. Budgens has lots of local produce - lovely bread, butter, cheese, cakes - and rubbish stock control so these items are often discounted and a nice unexpected treat. M&S food is to my mind overpriced faux luxury stuff. They have an unerring instinct for ruining things with extra unnecessary ingredients. I was put off Waitrose by someone being unwilling (or unable) to cut me 75g of Dolcelatte cheese once, she seemed to think that I should be happy with half a kilo.

skirk64 · 26/03/2021 09:03

In order of "common as shit" to "so upmarket I'll never, ever shop there:
Netto (if that still exists)
Iceland, Spar (scummy shops, tend to be in deprived areas though)
Aldi, Lidl (attract normal people as well as lowlifes)
Asda, Sainsbury's (Asda cheap but rough, Sainsbury's full of people who think it is classy because it's more expensive)
Morrisons, Tesco, M&S, Co-op (normal people shops)
Waitrose (mixture of top earners slumming it, upper middle doing weekly shop, and normals doing occasional shop)
Harrods (mainly for tourists)
Fortnum and Mason (if you were born with a palladium spoon in your mouth)

Never been to Farm Foods and never heard of Booths so can't comment on them. To be fair, I've never used Harrods or Fortnum and Mason either, but that's only because I can't afford them.

mellicauli · 26/03/2021 09:04

Aldi is cheaper than Morrison’s but definitely posher. They sell proper wine, not the mass market rubbish you get in Morrison’s and don’t have aisles devoted to 1970s cream cakes made of chemicals. Morrison’s have large quantities of suspiciously orange cheese, Aldi have delightful manchego. You can’t eat the ready meals at either of them, of course.

The staff are much more polite In Aldi and they actually scan your shopping for you. In Morrison’s they are videoing you in case you nick anything then leave you sitting there for 20 minutes while they come sort out their computer glitch. They also have an automatic “guillotine” to prevent you leaving if their spies think you have failed to pay for you anaemia sausage roll. That’s decidedly déclassé in my book.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/03/2021 09:05

I would put morrisons and tesco in a tier below sainsburys, but above asda.

Most of the properly posh folk I know shop at overpriced village butchers and the like.

Whitney168 · 26/03/2021 09:09

I don't know which is 'posher', but I've just swapped my delivery pass to Sainsbury's from Tesco and it won't last long - finding the food much lower quality.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 09:11

@MiddlesexGirl

Tesco is more posh than Sainsburys and Asda.
It’s way more posh than Asda but definitely not more posh than Sainsbury’s.
tangerinelollipop · 26/03/2021 09:12

Aldi and Sainsbury's are ace Grin

JanetWeb2812 · 26/03/2021 09:12

Alan Coren , father of Victoria, once said that Sainsbury's was his favourite shop: because it kept the riff-raff out of Waitrose!

Judging by the number of manky Barbours you now see in our local Lidl I would say they are definitely posher than Morrison's Grin

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 09:14

I now feel like I’ve taken this way too seriously by commenting!! 😆😆

I just would never think of Tesco as posh. But then I wouldn’t think of Sainsbury’s as posh either...

MoreWater · 26/03/2021 09:14

The poshness of the shop is inversely proportional to the ratio of the crisp aisle to the footprint of the shopfloor overall Grin

viques · 26/03/2021 09:15

Harrods is expensive, but pretty chavvy for a lot of its merchandise IMO. They are largely catering to a demographic that is wealthy and likes its bling on show rather than being subtle and understated.

Fortnum and Masons looks fabulous, but is not intimidating when you get inside, and their perfume department is wonderful and run by very friendly staff.

The really scarey shops are those gorgeous Bond Street clothes shops where the clothes are exquisite and sparsely displayed ( often you don’t try off the rack, they fetch you something from the stock room) there is nothing over a size 10, there are wonderful fresh flower arrangements , sofas and chairs to sit on , but actually the assistants are usually really knowledgeable and friendly once you pluck up courage and get inside! They also wrap your purchases beautifully so unwrapping them when you get home is a total pleasure.

Ninkanink · 26/03/2021 09:16

Yes ALDI/LIDL are actually posh by virtue of the fact that many of the people who shop at Waitrose also routinely shop at one of those. The biggest crossover, if I remember correctly (although the stats would be a few years old by now).
