Shopping in pyjamas

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?
@LST. I have never in my life gone to the bin in my nightdress (l do not wear pyjamas). Occasionally someone has rung the doorbell very early before l have got dressed. I quickly put some day clothes over the nightie.
I can't quickly do anything. My neighbours and postman are now used to me in pjs and a dressing gown!

helpIhateclothesshopping · 21/03/2021 18:58

I'd have more of an issue with why the whole family feel the need to go shopping together in lockdown when it's supposed to be just one person. That winds me up more, when you have a whole family cluttering up the aisle and you can't get past. I haven't shopped in PJs since I was a student and we made a midnight dash to the local petrol station to stock up on snackage. I certainly wouldn't go in slippers it just looks daft.

DrSbaitso · 21/03/2021 18:59

There's nothing wrong with opening the door to the postman in your dressing gown. You're at home!

ViciousJackdaw · 21/03/2021 19:03

Link for the shitting postman? Sounds like a children's song gone horribly wrong

Postman Shat?

"I definitely see leggings the same as pjs. I wouldn't wear them in public but I'm not going to leap to conclusions about someone who does."

Oh dear.. black leggings and a tunic are my "smart work wear". What a slovenly excuse for a woman I am Grin

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

It’s revolting. I’d leave the shop if I were you. Who knows what goods they have touched, fresh from their beds. Yuck.

Stoppissingonmyheather · 21/03/2021 19:13

None of your business really is it? I see people wearing some horrific things and looking a right ole state (when I look in the mirror usually) far worse than pj's so what who cares luckily they can wear what they want and so can you maybe your tweed skirt and sensible shoes blow dried hair and perfect appearance offends them too didn't think of that did you

Totaldogsbody · 21/03/2021 19:18

Saw a teenage girl out walking her dog. It had been a beautiful day. She was wearing white pjs and fluffy sliders. She was caught in a sudden downpour, let's just say nothing was left to the imagination. I had been driving by at the time with my DH. I think it's just laziness and a lack of respect for oneself.

StoneofDestiny · 21/03/2021 19:21

But if they seem happy, is it an issue?

Well if happiness is the standard we'd have people turn out in their underwear, screeching at their offspring, queue jumping etc - as long as they are happy, after all acceptable behaviour around these things are just about 'social norms' too.

Do these eejits in pyjamas dress like this for weddings, church, the cinema, restaurants and work - or do they realise there is such a thing as appropriate clothing for different activities and occasions?

starsparkle08 · 21/03/2021 19:23

I suffer severe depression and often will sleep in my day clothes as too exhausted to change .
Its easy to make assumptions on things we no nothing about . I wish all I had to worry about was why someone was wearing pjs in a shop

Notavegan · 21/03/2021 19:29

I used to work near the tesco store that had to ban it.
The area is as rough as f%ck. There are some nicer areas near too so apologies if you are local and not a pj wearing whilst shopping chav.

Strangekindofwoman · 21/03/2021 19:33

Those pj trousers just look like any other cotton trousers. And plenty of people wear sliders outdoors.

Meh, I can't get worked up about it.

QueenoftheFarts · 21/03/2021 19:33

I only wear my pj's to bed...

But I do have my Sarurday lounging outfit (Its a sacred outfit for the day of rest and relaxation), which is basically fleecy polka-dot bottoms and a big comfy top.... on reflection this ensemble does LOOK like pj's... and I probably WOULD skid into the co-op in it if I had an urgent requirement. It would have to be a serious emergency though... like chocolate.

I have to look 'corporate' on zoom calls all week so I don't really care what anyone else wears, and I don't really care what anyone else thinks about what I wear on my days off.

I think its mean to call people tramps for being in their pj's. They may have stuff going on that we don't know about.

Of note though... considering the date it could be comic relief. In the pre-covid world we would have a pajama day at our firm and I would rock up to the office in the loudest pj's, dressing gown and rollers I could find...

Strangekindofwoman · 21/03/2021 19:38

I think calling people chavs, tramps and rough as fuck says far more about you than the pyjama wearers.

bigbluebus · 21/03/2021 19:39

DS once went to McDonald's at 5.00am in his PJs with a group of his flatmates. The only other people in there were workmen who thought it was some sort of student pyjama party. In fact their halls of residence had developed a serious leak and they had to evacuate in the middle of the night so decided to head to McDonald's and get some food. DS would definitely not go out anywhere in his PJs under normal circumstances.

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 21/03/2021 19:41

I think it is disgusting because it suggests poor personal hygiene if they have worn pyjamas all night then got up, not showered or changed and gone shopping - yuck!

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 21/03/2021 19:46

I don’t but I couldn’t care less what anyone else is wearing tbh. I’ve got enough on my plate without making judgement on other people.

Sometimes I see mums on the school run like this. My children’s school put out a request in the newsletter not to do it. But tbh, I have children with special needs and I can see why this does happen sometimes. Either way...if it isn’t affecting me, I personally am not bothered.

Hellomotto2 · 21/03/2021 19:48

Yes queen!! I agree 100 percent. Live and let life, get a life and get that stick outta your arse. So judgemental. I bet people wouldn’t judge people if they are wearing gym gear out of the gym and in the shop? I doubt it. It’s this idea that lazy people deserve the death penalty. Imagine being annoyed cause somebody is wearing a cotton suit? GET. A. FUCKING. LIFE.
And for the people saying it’s “Chavvy” how very classist and narrow minded.

nannykatherine · 21/03/2021 19:53

So when they go home they sit about the house relaxing in the clothes and slippers they walked all about in the supermarket and in the street and car ??? During a pandemic !!!!!!gross

Waferbiscuit · 21/03/2021 19:54

Why are so people on MN so keen to chant 'It's none of your business' when they are on a forum that is essentially driven by nosiness? I think what we discover is a lot of things that people claim to be 'none of your business' impacts on others and on society.

As for how we dress, we live in something called society. It has basic expectations about we behave with ourselves and each other. It's generally respectful to try to dress appropriately and wear clean clothes as standard. Maybe what's lost here is an understanding of, and communication by others on, what is appropriate?

CrankyFrankie · 21/03/2021 19:57

I’m struggling to see how this would ever be ok. Even if for some reason you needed to go to the shop in your PJs, surely you’d put a big coat over the top, rather than a dressing gown?! I rarely even answer the door in my dressing gown, I must be getting very old.

Strangekindofwoman · 21/03/2021 19:59

I don't change my clothes after I've been to the supermarket. I sit about in the clothes I wore.
Stoppissingonmyheather · 21/03/2021 20:11

Are you offended by dirty homeless people in supermarkets in a PANDEMIC too? "tramps" Are you offended by ill looking people with life limiting illnesses in scruffy clothes? Are you offended by anyone that doesn't look like you dress like you, speak like you or live like you get over it

GinWithLime · 21/03/2021 20:11

I wear clean pyjamas in the daytime at home rather than clothes. What is the issue if I did go to the supermarket in them? How are they any less acceptable than a pair of clean jeans or a gym kit?
