Shopping in pyjamas

radiateforme · 20/03/2021 18:11

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

God does it matter in the spectrum of global evils? Not at all. I'd judge the people judging!

MrsBadcrumble123 · 21/03/2021 17:39

It may have been a fun family thing for a laugh. Saying that the chavs where I live do it for attention in a 'look how 'ard I am', but these are the same morons that park on the chevrons outside the school, smoke around their kids and basically cause misery to anyone that meets them... so they may have just been having fun with the kids..

expatinspain · 21/03/2021 17:42

In the area of Spain where I live quite a few people do this. People stand on the street at all times of day chatting to each other in their pjs. People also predominantly wear pjs at home. I though it was pretty weird when I first moved here, but I'm used to it now. I don't do it, although I have done the school run in pjs with my coat over and ugg boots 😂 To be fair, they don't look like pjs, more like casual trousers.

XenoBitch · 21/03/2021 17:43

@yphtutor

Wrong on every level. Totally agree with you. Slovenly, nightwear is for bedtime or chilling at home. I saw someone in our local Tesco’s recently shopping barefoot! Unhygienic at any time but doubly so now.
Why would the lack of shoes be unhygienic?
TrialOfStyle · 21/03/2021 17:45

I don’t wear PJs, but I do have an exciting pair of grey joggers with dinosaur print that I will wear out for walks and shopping. TBH they probably do look like PJs but they are comfy and clean and my jeans no longer fit so c’est la vie.

LST · 21/03/2021 17:46

@B33Fr33

I definitely see leggings the same as pjs. I wouldn't wear them in public but I'm not going to leap to conclusions about someone who does.
As in plain black leggings? Ones people wear with long tops? The hell is up with them?!
LST · 21/03/2021 17:48

Hope you're ok x

That was for @Xenobitch.
cherish123 · 21/03/2021 17:59

How bizarre. I've never actually seen this. I am a teacher and sometimes parents drop off in pyjamas if they have slept in. I find this unacceptable. It takes 2 secs to slip on jeans and an anorak.

sandgrown · 21/03/2021 17:59

Are these people the “shoes off” families who always wear slippers inside ? Do their slippers not get dirty at the supermarket or do they have indoor and outdoor slippers ? Just asking .

Violinist64 · 21/03/2021 18:00

I'm afraid l am another person who thinks it slovenly and lazy. I really dislike wearing night wear anywhere but in bed. I am a smart casual person at the best of times in any case. It is unhygienic and disrespectful to others to wear night wear outside the house.

Mermaid67 · 21/03/2021 18:01

Far too hot wearing pyjamas in bed, I just love to lounge in them( but not go to supermarket 😂)

SmileEachDay · 21/03/2021 18:03

What kind of conclusions could you leap to about someone wearing leggings in public?

Jeeperscreepers69 · 21/03/2021 18:05

@PandaFluff. Hehe could be a reasonable reason. Because pjs to shops is rather scruffy

Flatoutonsofa · 21/03/2021 18:07

@Candlesinthewind

And why not? Next step is just underwear? It’s no worse/better than a bikini/budgie smuggler on the beach. And actually, they should burp and fart as they go - ffs it’s not illegal. You are being very judgmental. Get out there tomorrow in your jimjams - have a fart or two - stand in your power!
Thanks for making me laugh! Sincerely hope you're not being serious!
KateLink · 21/03/2021 18:10

A few years ago I worked at a university and was shocked when most of the class would roll in in their PJs!

It does seem to be becoming more common. Nothing wrong with it, but personally, I prefer to keep my PJs at home!!

KateLink · 21/03/2021 18:10

Besides, where else can we get dressed up to go these days! Grin

Coffeeandbikes · 21/03/2021 18:11

From an infection control point of view I would never dream of going out in my Jammies after sleeping all night in them. All that sweat and skin waiting to be shedded.
If they are clean on I have no issue with it

Even to the bin? Have I been disrespectful to my neighbours my whole life?
Nearly47 · 21/03/2021 18:15

In my house I always pjs on. But I would never go out in them. They are lovely clean and apart from the shame I wouldn't want to get the "dirty of the outside" on them. Same with sleepers. Indoors only.

grannieali · 21/03/2021 18:25

Surely pyjamas are getting indistinguishablefrom casual wear? In summer light stretch trousers, a teeshirt a d slip on shoes or trainers. In winter, add a quilted jacket , scarf and hat. For women who really need a bra, then sleep with it on. Dressed and ready to go in five minutes to allow for combing hair.,However, unless you don't mind being seen with no make up, you will have to rake time to add pressed powdwer and lipstick. All this for getting kids to school, putting out the bins just in time, catching the first post, walking the dog, catching the first bus into town, but none of this for work or seeing the head teacher.

bondgirl76 · 21/03/2021 18:43

rollers? Damn..what century are we livimg in

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 21/03/2021 18:46

@Stonerosie67

Maybe their house burnt down and that's all they have

You are joking, right???

Of course she is Grin

I wouldn't do it but I really can't be bothered to judge those who do. It's not hurting anyone is it?!

Apparently is v common in New Zealand. Barefoot too

LovelyIssues · 21/03/2021 18:51

Chavs

Violinist64 · 21/03/2021 18:52

@LST. I have never in my life gone to the bin in my nightdress (l do not wear pyjamas). Occasionally someone has rung the doorbell very early before l have got dressed. I quickly put some day clothes over the nightie.
