To ask what do you consider timeless clothing?

Hoping for traffic to see lots of opinions!

What pieces would you or do you have in your wardrobe that are always "in" and look lovely regardless of the current trends?
Be it shoes, jackets or general clothing.
I'd love to hear some examples as I'm in the process of adding a few things to my wardrobe and would really like to go for timeless and classic staples (both everyday and formal/occasion wear) that will stand the test of time rather than be out of fashion in a year or so.

So can I ask the wise MM community what would you recommend I look for?

CRISP WHITE SHIRT claxon

ZaraW · 23/03/2021 14:23

@DrSbaitso

For all those saying fishnets should never be worn at work or over the age of whatever, take that.
It's a no from me. The bolero cardigan is awful, and looks dated.
PrincessNutNuts · 23/03/2021 14:32

@Meowchickameowmeow

The big boss woman wears these massive shouldered trouser suits made of upholstery fabric

Rebecca's suits were amazing, I'd wear the shit out of those.

I agree about the detective's weird jeans though, they looked awful.

The suits are a really strong look, and it "suits" Grinthe kick ass character.

There was one that pushed me right over the edge though, a bit silvery, made of a shiny brocade sofa fabric. Wink

I think the woman in the photo looks as if she rolled out of bed with ten minutes to catch her train, grabbed the first items off the top of the pile, pulled them on and ran with them.

The bolero detracts significantly from the overall look, as do the fishnets.

Oblomov21 · 24/03/2021 04:04

Timeless? I have practically none of these. And no way are fishnets appropriate for the office!

What on earth do you wear? - nearly every item of clothing for sale in the last 30 years has been mentioned on this thread! 😂
Stratfordplace · 24/03/2021 08:11

I can honestly say I didn’t like one item in that photo, even the handbag was awful.
I used to like visiting the City of London and the West End and people watching to see the beautifully put together outfits worn by the people working up there. You can definitely find inspiration.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 08:30

@DrSbaitso, that outfit is awful. The cardigan is not great, the shoes dated, the tights hideous, the dress is just ok and the bag looks like a shopping bag.

requitalissima · 24/03/2021 14:23

Echo the opinions above regarding the photo posted earlier. The whole outfit is hideous, no redeeming features whatsoever.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 15:01

It looks like an outfit put together from charity shop bargains.

requitalissima · 24/03/2021 17:48

Hah, do not belittle charity shop bargains Grin, wonderous items have I found in these goldmines.
I also like the monochrome look a lot - but the person in the photo is doing it all wrong.
One can't have every item one wears the same colour. Very Smurf.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 19:27

Oh, I'm not belittling them. They are indeed goldmines.
Can't wait for them to open again.

MinnieMous3 · 24/03/2021 23:13

Re the fishnet photo - the lady has an incredible figure and a really slim waist, but no, outfit is not a good look. I guess the grey fitted dress is an office staple, but the cardi is very 2005 and the tights look odd, almost self conscious against her outfit.

She would’ve looked better wearing the dress with some very sheer glossy tights and a jewel coloured slim blazer.

MinnieMous3 · 24/03/2021 23:19

Found this online and I would broadly agree, although not the beret or armless cardi thing.

Most of that stuff looks cheap and tacky - those pearl earrings are hideous - the Burberry style scarf. The dull beige coat. The slippers!!!! - I mean are they your idea of classy? I like the candle though!

I hate dresses with blazers - that is so hard to pull off - it looks cheap. Dress and a coat is fine - the blazer thing just looks like an add on that doesn't work.

MinnieMous3 · 25/03/2021 13:17

@Leftturnstraightahead yes they are! I think if you can find a shade of camel/tan which suits your skin tone, it’s always a classy colour to wear (if the clothes are not from Boohoo or similar!)

A good quality tote bag, a high end classic style watch and pearl earrings will never date.

I do like a silk scarf tied around a handbag, also a red lip.

Not convinced - our styles are very different - silk scarf tied around a handbag - that's a Sloane too far!

MinnieMous3 · 25/03/2021 14:42

😂 it is a bit sloaney but I draw the line at those weird tasselled loafers and pearl necklaces...

Stratfordplace · 25/03/2021 15:01

Well I don’t like the tan bag or gloves, and I would not have the cardigan or Burberry scarf but I would have everything else. It’s all quite elegant just don’t like that shade of tan or Burberry check.

I think that’s what timeless clothing is, something which will never make you look out of place.
MarieIVanArkleStinks · 25/03/2021 15:51

Dr Marten boots.

Youcunnyfunt · 25/03/2021 16:10

A simple black dress is one of the few truly timeless pieces that is hard to date. Obviously some cuts can still be dated.

I think pretty much every garment can be dated based on the colour, cut and embellishments.

Classic looks are just a plain, simple, well cut and structured version of whatever is currently fashionable.

Leftturnstraightahead · 25/03/2021 16:14

I look at the classic gift guide and I see old lady...it's the kind of thing the wealthy old ladies (75+) wear around here - with far too much make up pan-caked on and puffy over styled hair.
