Hoping for traffic to see lots of opinions!

What pieces would you or do you have in your wardrobe that are always "in" and look lovely regardless of the current trends?
Be it shoes, jackets or general clothing.
I'd love to hear some examples as I'm in the process of adding a few things to my wardrobe and would really like to go for timeless and classic staples (both everyday and formal/occasion wear) that will stand the test of time rather than be out of fashion in a year or so.

So can I ask the wise MM community what would you recommend I look for?

@sonjadog

Something like this: www.etsy.com/no-en/listing/171386379/patchwork-skirt-for-all-sizes-custom?ref=shop_home_feat_1

I have this skirt btw. I wear it a lot in summer with a black t-shirt.

That brings back memories - I think I wore the same skirt I'm sure every day when I was a student in the 90's - it was quite a bit cheaper 😂...I still retain a small element of hippy style.
mathanxiety · 22/03/2021 19:21

LemonRoses sorority girls wear black leggings, ugly sporty t-shirts, brown boots, and carry expensive handbags. Also lots of makeup.

Serin · 22/03/2021 19:30

I dont think band T shirts and leather jackets date.

Band t-shirts and leather jackets that started off cool probably just get cooler. But I can think of lots of nasty looking leather jackets.
SarahBellam · 22/03/2021 19:39

I don’t think it’s that easy. I think it depends on who you are, your shape, your age, and your personality. My 15yo size 8 DD OWNS the Jack Wills smart preppy look. She looks cool and chic and as if she knows her shit (she gets JW in the sale for birthdays and Christmas or off eBay). If I wore it I’d look like a bag of potatoes wearing Jack Wills.

I am large of nork so even if I was to wear Hobbes or LKBennett (back in the day) or even something a bit more special I still look the look like the love child of Barbara Windsor and a BierKeller serving wench. So the whole blazer, fishnet, camel coat (a bit Del Boy), white shirt thing is not for me. Scoop neck white t-shirts or vests, jewel coloured cardigans, slim trousers and a slim swing style jacket with vintage silver or gold suit me best.

Tassel leather jackets Confused

Blazer style leather jackets Confused

80’s style black leather jackets with shoulder pads that when worn there would be no need to socially distance as you can only socially distance when wearing that have red and white lightening pattern 😬

Fair isle jumpers

I have just been assuming that I knew what “ankle grazer” length was. So... just about grazing your ankle? Am I wrong?
Ankle grazer on anyone under 6 ft?
Mypathtriedtokillme · 23/03/2021 02:19

Timeless outfit:
A decent raincoat, boots and pants combo.
The sex appeal couldn’t be higher because someone smart enough that they remain dry is the apex of hotness.

It’s windy and torrential raining/major flooding here (Aus) and people are still walking about with stupid little umbrellas soaking wet or taking their kids to school who are soaked to the skin by the time they actually get there.

ChaToilLeam · 23/03/2021 08:07

I’m very short, top heavy and can’t wear high heels, so a lot of these suggestions would just drown me and leave me looking like I’m playing dress up. I do prefer simple, well cut clothes - anything fussy looks awful on me - and then I have fun with the accessories.

Things that do work well and are staples of my short person wardrobe:
A good petite cut suit (I have black and navy)
Well cut work dresses, knee length, black, grey and navy
Pencil skirt
Knee length boots
V neck or ballerina neck black jersey top
Soft black silk shirt
Belted coat, to mid thigh
Light belted raincoat, again petite cut
Flattering jeans, for me that means slim cut but not too tight
Striped top, I have various colours. The neckline is crucial since I am large of nork.
Lots of simple cotton dresses for summer, mostly knee length or a little below.

I love fishnets and they can look great with a knee length skirt. Adds a little sauce to an otherwise conservative outfit. And I will hold onto my old leather blazer until it falls apart, it has served me well.

For all those saying fishnets should never be worn at work or over the age of whatever, take that.

Looks lovely apart from the hideous things in her legs.

I don’t think fishnets are good anywhere, let alone at work. Unless you’re in the entertainment industry.

I still think that looks awful 🙈 I guess it's horses for courses!
DrSbaitso · 23/03/2021 10:25

Well I think she looks fabulous and the fishnets give an element of fun to the corporate nature of it and stop it being boring... but even if it's not to your taste, she certainly doesn't look like she belongs in a music hall (not that I'd mind that either, though), or she's pretending to be 22, or inappropriate for the office or any of the other daft reasons we've had on here for never wearing fishnets. At worst, she's gone for an aesthetic that not everyone likes but which I do think she's put together well.

I agree - I think she looks very professional, which doesn't have to mean dull but also it will very much depend on the industry as to how formal that needs to go. And it is changing all the time. Looking extra stuffy doesn't always make the best impression.

I know one women from the finance sector - senior position, who went to San Francisco to work with Head Office for a couple of weeks - she was sent out to buy a new wardrobe before she even set foot in the office as the staff there would see her as "a suit lacking imagination and modern thinking" fear was her ideas would not be taken seriously. Times are a changing and the uber conservative dressers no longer have the floor all the time! Dressing appropriately is key - if you can figure out the new rules because the rules have definitely changed!

SplendidSuns1000 · 23/03/2021 11:18

I have a sort of capsule wardrobe- around 30 staple pieces (some I have duplicates or slight variations of.

Skinny/fitted jeans, fitted jumpers, oversized but not frumpy jumpers, cotton shirts, plain t shirts, striped t shirts, casual blazer, leather jacket, rain coat.

All my clothes are black, white, cream, beige, burgundy or green so I can mix and match most items and they go together. I have a few patterned blouses and skirts but generally stick with plain and use accessories to keep up with trends.

I buy high quality clothes I know will last a long time, and shoes that won't fall apart if I wear them for all activities. I have black dr martens, chelsea boots and ballet flats that pretty much go with everything. I don't wear heels often but the ones I have are nude and black so they match everything too.

I don't think anything's timeless according to trends but you can definitely wear a similar style your whole life.

Kimye4eva · 23/03/2021 11:56

Well I think she looks fabulous

I disagree. Not because of the fishnets exactly but because I think the whole outfit does nothing for her shape. And I think cardigans look very drab with shift dresses, especially if all in dark colours.

PrincessNutNuts · 23/03/2021 12:14

I started watching The One on Netflix and there's an older female character in a leather skirt and I went "oooh!" because of this thread. Grin

The big boss woman wears these massive shouldered trouser suits made of upholstery fabric.

And the female cop wears shiny buttoned jeans that both seem to point at her crotch and make it look as if her lower belly sticks out.

I never normally think any of these thoughts. Grin

Rebecca's suits were amazing, I'd wear the shit out of those.

I agree about the detective's weird jeans though, they looked awful.

Craftycorvid · 23/03/2021 12:41

Disclaimer: I’m the polar opposite of the ‘capsule wardrobe’ woman.

My personal ‘classics’ as in they are always in my wardrobe in some form:

Doc Martens
Brogues
Sneakers (Converse/Veja)
Breton tops - wear them with mom jeans or skirts.
Dungarees
Tailored jackets - quite masculine ones
Tea dresses
Biker jacket
Jeans jacket
Cashmere anything!

Within that, all sorts of bits and pieces - I hope it doesn’t look frumpy because of how I combine things. I’ve no objection to a fishnet and would possibly combine with the Docs. 😁

LadyPoison · 23/03/2021 12:50

Even the "classics" date.

Collar shapes change and I have some "classic" leather jackets that look very dated due to the cut and they weren't ever high fashion even when new - classic in fact!

Whoever this is, is very pretty and has a lovely figure, but the outfit is awful, very old fashioned and dated. The little cardigan thing and fishnets and particularly bad. I wouldn't say it's a classic outfit.
Cocomarine · 23/03/2021 13:56

@DrSbaitso

The dress is fantastic and I would argue til the cows come home that it is a “classic”.

Dull in that grey - though I like it - but as timeless as anything suggested here. Certainly I’ve worn that style in the 80s and 10s.

The bolero short cardigan thing - was in about 5 years ago, looks dated now. I mean - it looks OK - I have one I wear to work over a black spotted shift dress! But it’s definitely a fashion item, not timeless.

And sorry - I don’t think the fishnets look great at all 🙈 and I’m not fishnet hater. A finer mesh, maybe. It’s a look that would OK in my office today - but certainly not a classic look. Just someone who likes fishnets and that’s their choice, rather than, “oooooh - what a look!”

Meowchickameowmeow · 23/03/2021 14:09

The bolero cardigan is very dated, it's just not flattering on anyone. They cut the body off at a weird point and never seem to sit right at the front, they look like they need pulling back up the shoulders all the time.
