To ask what do you consider timeless clothing?

Hoping for traffic to see lots of opinions!

What pieces would you or do you have in your wardrobe that are always "in" and look lovely regardless of the current trends?
Be it shoes, jackets or general clothing.
I'd love to hear some examples as I'm in the process of adding a few things to my wardrobe and would really like to go for timeless and classic staples (both everyday and formal/occasion wear) that will stand the test of time rather than be out of fashion in a year or so.

So can I ask the wise MM community what would you recommend I look for?

Have decided the reason why people on this thread think most of these clothes are timeless is they are living in another decade, maybe even century.

DrSbaitso · 20/03/2021 17:39

I'm surprised to see blazers coming up so much. I always thought they were very 90s. But that might be because they're something else I look crap in, so I've never tried to buy one.

Cocomarine · 20/03/2021 18:04

Blazers are just that Sloane Ranger thing again.

What’s a “good belt”?

I’m suspicious that it means, “one that has an identifiable wealth indicating designer buckle on it.”

Rather than one which simply does a “good” job in holding your trousers up 😉

Actually, that said - belts are decorative only on me, given my waist to hip ratio. Ain’t no trousers sliding their way accidentally over THESE hips 🤣

@Cocomarine
As my MIL says: " The ones who matter, know; the ones who don't know, don't matter.".

She is a marvellous snob, though Smile

Indeed! 🤣
When I said a wealth indicating buckle, I didn’t mean some trashy obvious pair of G’s... but any kind of wealth indicator to “those who know” 😌😉

Yes, some people continue to dress in the style they dressed in during their prime. For a lot of posters, that seems to be the 1990s.

Isn’t that the point of a timeless wardrobe? It doesn’t date over the decades and is resistant to the whims of fashion.
DrSbaitso · 20/03/2021 20:19

The 90s may have been fun, but the fashions definitely date (though they came back recently) and are not resistant to the whims of anything.

Though the 90s were also a rerun of the 70s.

DrSbaitso · 20/03/2021 20:22

As a small aside...I'm kind of tickled by how many people have to specify that timeless pieces must be "well fitting". Don't know why, it just seems kind of obvious....though baggy has been in several times.

Crayfishforyou · 20/03/2021 20:24

Vintage clothes worn with modern haircuts and shoes

TheBuffster · 20/03/2021 20:28

Bootleg indigo jeans (I realise these aren't currently in, but on the over 25s I don't think they've ever been out)

Navy striped t shirts and summer dresses

Black cami

Biscuit coloured cardigans

White summer cami

Summer highlights

Winter lowlights

Hugo Boss Deep Red

I think they mean ‘good quality’. The cut of quality clothes will always be better than cheap ones, and they age/wash better.
Wanderlust20 · 20/03/2021 20:48

Trench coat.

I worked with a woman in the 1990s who declared we had finally reached a point where fashion never had to change again because we had now arrived at good taste forever. It feels like she is on this thread...a lot!

I think they mean ‘good quality’. The cut of quality clothes will always be better than cheap ones, and they age/wash better. I wish that were universally true - I weep at some of my favourite expensive clothing that shrank and fell to ribbons, expensive clothes are often not made to be robust.

thelegohooverer · 20/03/2021 20:59

I don't think timeless fashion exists. But it is possible to find slow fashion pieces, that last for years.

I’ve lived through several iterations of the timeless shift dress, each one contriving to make its predecessors look frumpy.

An alternative is to opt for vintage pieces- pre 1960s to avoid looking like you haven’t moved on from your youth.

Katiejanej · 20/03/2021 20:59

Fine Jewellery is the only truly timeless thing that you can wear. Everything else wears out or dates. A good ring bought at 30 can be worn everyday and still look amazing when you’re 80.

LolaSmiles · 20/03/2021 21:06

I might be way out of step on this, but I found trying to have a 'timeless' wardrobe ended up being a waste of time and money because after buying a white shirt, black dress, camel coat due to hearing about how versatile they are, I hardly wore them.

When I looked at what I actually wore and enjoyed wearing, and stripped back the 'should' items, I became much happier and more confident in my timeless style rather than what fashion bloggers told me was timeless.

Orangeblossomscent · 20/03/2021 21:12

@LemonRoses that's not quite what I meant - I'll try again - the clothes have dated but so has the wearer's taste in clothing - both are stuck in the 90s. I can see why that would make someone think their style was timeless. Nothing wrong with wearing 90s clothing if that's your thing - but it isn't timeless.

DrSbaitso · 20/03/2021 21:23

To be fair, apart from the shibari additions (and even those still have their place), Posh's dress still looks pretty good.

Orangeblossomscent Lovely name. I’m smiling and thinking to myself that 90s clothes are quite modern still.

Cocomarine · 20/03/2021 21:31

I’m just enjoying that there’s a conversation between @LemonRoses and @Orangeblossomscent 💚 💐

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 20/03/2021 21:38

Where are you buying your blazers and trench coats? I am small and don't suit beige or grey so perhaps trenches are a no no for me?
I like the simple look because it suits me, and really that's the important thing tho it's not easy!

Mara2021 · 20/03/2021 22:19

@Orangeblossomscent So you think it's acceptable and professional for healthcare managers to wear leather skirts and silk blouses to work?
