Katie Price wants to stop trollling and receives abuse in response

Doyoumind · 15/03/2021 07:18

Katie Price is trending on twitter because she wants anyone using social media to need ID to sign up so online abuse can be prevented. I can understand her point. I can also see why people would be against this.

But in response there are thousands of abusive and misogynistic tweets. It's kind of ironic. And proof that for all the recent virtue signalling, it's still absolutely fine to be vile to a woman.

When it comes to KP and her family it really crosses lines.
More power to her elbow, she's trying.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/03/2021 07:20

Agree with her! When people think it’s ok to go after a disabled child something is seriously wrong with the social media set up.

Peppafrig · 15/03/2021 07:24

A lot of people seem to be saying that many people don’t have ID . Not everyone has a passport or driving license. I can’t say I know of one single person without both of those .

TheQueef · 15/03/2021 07:29

Part of being an adult is having ID. Poor excuses.

I’m sure they find something to access a pub!

Admittedly I haven’t got either but social circumstances (I’m a full time carer to a parent and a sibling) mean I’ve never had the opportunity to go to the pub and can’t afford to drive (and can’t afford to go abroad so passport would be useless) ! I can’t be the only one . But I agree wholeheartedly with Katie Price .
Doyoumind · 15/03/2021 07:38

Teens are worried it will ruin their lives. They have forgotten previous generations didn't have social media and survived without it. She's not stopping people being anonymous online. Just ensuring they are identifiable if they need to be.

Oh come on
Kpo58 · 15/03/2021 07:42

I don't have any current ID that I could use to prove who I am online (no passport/driving license/credit card). Also I would be too worried about major hacks and that the ID to be used for other purposes.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 15/03/2021 07:45

There seems to be an opinion around Katie price that because of the way she lives her life/courts the media that she's "fair game"

You often see derogatory things said on MN about her. She's just trying to protect her child and its really sad to see the response she's getting.

When you're trolling a disabled child there's something wrong with you!!

SenecaTrewe · 15/03/2021 07:45

I think it's a great idea.

Don't have ID? Want to use social media? Then get some. Just as you'd get a passport if you needed go travel, or driving license if you wanted to drive.

There's always some mealy-mouthed person whining "I caaaaan't".

Tough titty.

Doyoumind · 15/03/2021 07:46

My point anyway was not about the rights or wrongs of the petition but the abuse she's getting for it. Not so long ago, if you wanted to be abusive to someone you had to own it or risk being identified easily. Now people can say whatever they want to whoever they want with no consequences.

OP posts:
Grenlei · 15/03/2021 07:47

It's rather a privileged statement to say you don't know anyone without a passport or driving licence. I know a few people who can't drive, and can't afford to travel abroad so have no need of either a passport or driving licence. Why should they be unable to access social media?!

As for Katie Price, it's all very well her bleating on about the conduct of others, but is she also going to be held to account for her own frequently vile and misogynistic social media comments? Or is it a case of 'do as I say and not as I do'? Hmm

Kpo58 · 15/03/2021 07:48

Would you really want your ID on social media if you cannot trust the government.

Imagine living in a country where if you had put your ID in social media and declared that you were gay, you could easily be tracked down and locked up.

Souther · 15/03/2021 07:49

I dont agree with all the abuse she is receiving.
But then I dont agree with having to use ID to sign up for online media either.

Doyoumind · 15/03/2021 07:49

But you only know what she has said because she's identified. In that respect she owns it.

I agree with her....... We've gone backwards in a lot of ways regarding Internet use. I remember years ago ID was needed to access lots of things online.

I also hate the fact that a man can make a so called joke about a small child raping their mother and then go on to reinvent himself as some sort of man of the people on the BBC but that's for another thread I suppose.

Doyoumind · 15/03/2021 07:50

This is about the UK. Don't make it about elsewhere.

I agree with KP. It’s far too easy for these people, to just fire off a vile message from the comfort of their home with no accountability.
Recently I have been trolled online after I agreed with someone about a local issue on cycling. The messages I had were vile. I think it was re-tweeted by someone with a lot of followers in that circle and it escalated massively. They were sneering and abusive, put downs, downright offensive, and horribly smug snd self congratulatory. All behind a lovely anonymous profile.

GladysTheGroovyMule · 15/03/2021 07:56

I definitely see where KP is coming from and I wish her all the best.

There are plenty of people who don’t have ID like a passport or driver’s license though-
I know plenty of people who can’t afford to go abroad and can’t afford to even learn to drive so have never bothered getting passport or drivers license because it’s an expense they simply can’t stretch to. It’s the reason I don’t believe you should need photo ID to vote in any election.

Lots of people don't have either.

DH drives but didn't get a passport until his mid thirties. His mum hasn't got either a passport or a driving license as she's never been abroad or learned how to drive.

Kpo58 · 15/03/2021 08:04

Unless you make it worldwide, there would be no point as someone would just use a VPN to spoof their location and get around the requirement of having to use ID.

Eviethyme · 15/03/2021 08:05

Tbh I think it's a great idea. Make people accountable for there actions, online and offline.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 15/03/2021 08:05

Okay. So what if you'd happily uploaded your ID and the site got hacked? Or the government changed the law and you suddenly found yourself banned for your sexuality or skin colour?

Just because this is the UK doesn't mean it wouldn't happen in the future.

tttigress · 15/03/2021 08:11

"This is about the UK. Don't make it about elsewhere"

Surely if this was introduced in the UK, it would give more authoritarian regimes the cover to monitor there citizens.

If they were told that they shouldn't be monitoring their citizens, they could alway respond, well the UK does it.
