Katie Price wants to stop trollling and receives abuse in response

Doyoumind · 15/03/2021 07:18

Katie Price is trending on twitter because she wants anyone using social media to need ID to sign up so online abuse can be prevented. I can understand her point. I can also see why people would be against this.

But in response there are thousands of abusive and misogynistic tweets. It's kind of ironic. And proof that for all the recent virtue signalling, it's still absolutely fine to be vile to a woman.

@SenecaTrewe

I think it's a great idea.

Don't have ID? Want to use social media? Then get some. Just as you'd get a passport if you needed go travel, or driving license if you wanted to drive.

There's always some mealy-mouthed person whining "I caaaaan't".

Tough titty.

100%

I think Katie Price is right.

Comefromaway · 15/03/2021 10:12

Whilst I understand her stance a friend of dd's who is autistic and campaigns for autistic people has politely tweeted her to ask about the issue of young people who are disabled/autistic and who don't have supportive parents as advocates and use social media to find out about their condition and to communicate with others like them. He is especially concerned about non verbal autistic people who may not have access to ID, especially when younger.

It's rather a privileged statement to say you don't know anyone without a passport or driving licence. I know a few people who can't drive, and can't afford to travel abroad so have no need of either a passport or driving licence. Why should they be unable to access social media?!

As for Katie Price, it's all very well her bleating on about the conduct of others, but is she also going to be held to account for her own frequently vile and misogynistic social media comments? Or is it a case of 'do as I say and not as I do'? hmm

  1. You can use a provisional license as ID, I do
  1. Everyone has one OR the other
  1. Social media is not a human right*

If you are medically unable to drive like my dh or like many disabled people, or are under the age of 17 then you cannot apply for a provisional licence.

Comefromaway · 15/03/2021 10:15

However making vile comments to a woman who is just trying to do her best is not on.

DynamoKev · 15/03/2021 10:16

How would the validity of the ID document be established exactly?

Agreed

In the past I've joined things that required a payment via card so they knew who I was. You pay a pound via card, then a few days later they refund you. Would that not work?

skirk64 · 15/03/2021 10:31

How would it be enforced? If you're up to no good you'd use a VPN so you could pretend to be from any country in the world (except probably Eritrea and North Korea).

This is the reason they seem to have abandoned the porn ID requirement, because anyone who wants to access it can just change their IP to appear to be outside of the UK.

So you have no other ID? Also point 3. I think it's uncommon to have no ID whatsoever. How did you open a bank account or any of that?

Age is a greater issue IMO, I don't know what the answer is there

It would be pretty easy for bad actors to use stolen or forged card details.

Most of you seem to be assuming good intentions.

The kind of people who leave offensive comments won’t care about playing by the rules

My husband has his birth certificate. He used to have a passport but we haven't been abroad for over 5 years and they are too expensive to renew for nothing.

A young person between the age of 14-17 may not have access to their birth certificate, especially if they are disabled/deemed uncapable.

I have carried out DBS checks on young people in a prvious job. Many struggle with ID and a letter from their headteacher is often used alongside a birth certificate.

Comefromaway · 15/03/2021 10:50

Her proposed legislation specifically states that under 18's should have ID provided by a parent. That could put many vulnerable young people who are seeking help/support at risk.

See I think you're wrong here, lots of people who leave these types of comments are normal, law abiding people. They just do it because they can!

Mysterian · 15/03/2021 11:01

@DynamoKev

There's a big difference between teenaged keyboard warriors being arseholes and people committing fraud. Will people risk a prison sentence in order to call a celebrity names?

DynamoKev · 15/03/2021 11:14

I’d love to see these proposals being put to Twitter :)

Or even MN.

How do you think the ID docs would be verified?

I disagree, I think the people who do it, wouldn't do it to someone's faces and certainly wouldn't have the guts to do it if they were know. They are mostly cowards who sit behind screens and the ones who don't care and continue to be vile individuals get their accounts blocked and a fine.

We can't just allow this sort of thing to continue, accepting it by excuses of Implementation or enforcement. The government very much could do both if it CHOSE to make it a priority. We have an ever raising mental health crisis and online abuse is part of the problem.

user127819 · 15/03/2021 11:48

@DynamoKev

This will never happen. Social media is run by the USA and their constitution protects free speech. Unless the USA passed a federal law demanding ID (which will never happen) this won’t happen. Our government never stands up to the USA.
The right to free speech doesn't extend to social media. Privately run platforms can delete whatever they want, for any reason.
Deadringer · 15/03/2021 11:51

I think it's a good idea. I am not techie so don't know if it would work but instead of id could you use your name and NIN as everyone has one of those? (I think its NIN in the UK, it's PPS in Ireland).

What would stop me using yours?

I agree it could be done if government chose to make it priority, but they won't. I think it would be very difficult to enforce in practice, even if government did chose to enact it.

You are missing my point, which is that Twitter, Facebook etc are US corporations who don't give a shit about UK (or Australian - see recent case) laws unless they are really forced to.
Our government really couldn't care less and they will never do anything to upset these giant tech corps.

CoteDAzur · 15/03/2021 12:13

"if you want to say something unpleasant then you should be identifiable."

So, you are championing the freedom to say nice things Hmm

Twitter will never agree to it, even for just the UK, but if it did that would be the end of dissent and hence debate online.

Just one example: There will be no GC feminism on Twitter, as whatever you say will be considered "unpleasant" by some TRA, who will then get your name and hound you in RL.

If you can't take strangers' honest opinions, don't go on Twitter.

Doyoumind · 15/03/2021 12:35

I'm still going to bring it back to the irony of abusing KP for her proposal and the hypocrisy of it coming from people who have likely been claiming to give a shit about how women are treated.

I havent got either a passport or a driving licence. :)
Peppafrig · 15/03/2021 13:57

I guess it would be extended to places like Mumsnet and Reddit and too. Would scare a lot of people off who would come asking for advice anonymously.
