Katie Price wants to stop trollling and receives abuse in response

Katie Price is trending on twitter because she wants anyone using social media to need ID to sign up so online abuse can be prevented. I can understand her point. I can also see why people would be against this.

But in response there are thousands of abusive and misogynistic tweets. It's kind of ironic. And proof that for all the recent virtue signalling, it's still absolutely fine to be vile to a woman.

And if social media companies refuse to implement this, what then?

Tigger001 · 15/03/2021 16:31

So, you are championing the freedom to say nice things

No, people are championing for cowardice bullies to be recognisable if needed. They are championing for debate to still be as free as ever, but not direct verbal assaults on people.

Just one example: There will be no GC feminism on Twitter, as whatever you say will be considered "unpleasant" by some TRA, who will then get your name and hound you in RL.

People are not talking about unpleasant debate, they are talking about trolling people, if you are not ashamed of your views or the way you voice them, why would it be an issue for you to be identifiable to a governing body of that site for instance

If you can't take strangers' honest opinions, don't go on Twitter.
It's not about opinion, it's about being directly vile to another individual whilst cowardly hiding away behind a screen.

Most posters seem to be missing the point :/

It's not about whether her idea is good or not. It's about the appalling stuff she's getting in response. The OP was very clear on that.

Maybe a lot of people find it easier to engage with the idea than say anything about the abuse?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/03/2021 16:55

Im not on Social Media. However I wouldn't be comfortable having my ID on line. Wanting your Privacy doesn't particularly mean you're up to no good.Is it even safe for start. Its all very an I'm alright Jack piping up with "Get some" and "Tough titty". However these things cost money which at the moment a,lot of people don't have

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/03/2021 16:56

The Authorities can find out who you are y your IP Address can't they

Part of being an adult is having ID. Poor excuses.
I can't drive because of disability. Until I was 39, I had never held a passport, as, frankly, paying for food and rent was significantly more important to me than trying to persuade somebody who hadn't known me for 2 years to lie and verify two photographs.

I wasn't being a child. I was busy being poor and disabled.

Such comments are dickish, in my opinion.

RE bank accounts, rent, work, uni etc - for ID my GP used to sign the back of passport photos for me . Said she did it all the time for students . I don’t suppose that’s done much anymore - or I guess GP would charge a fortune . I’ve had the same bank account since I was 5 years old so that’s never been an issue .

I’ve never had the spare cash to get a passport, have never been concerned about driving (can’t afford it) and honestly, citizen card was a bit of a faff for something I wouldn’t always use . I don’t go to the pub, nightclubs or buy alcohol really .

I suppose they’d have to have alternatives like a utility bill or something . Dsis has Facebook but she doesn’t have ID and doesn’t always have capacity (to make legal decisions I mean - she can make day to day ones) so that’s an even bigger issue .

What else, then? Anybody can get hold of a birth certificate. It's about as reliable in proving identity as a note from your Mum. You might not have bills in your name covering the last two years. The usual 'council tax bill dated within the last three months only works if you're named on the council tax bill and your local council doesn't do everything online to the main resident. If you're homeless/living in temporary accommodation/a refuge, you won't have a utility bill from the last six months, either. Many GPs refuse to countersign passports these days, as they don't have a clue who their patients are, they just know who their patients say they are (albeit this is more difficult these days as part of the hostile environment preventing people who look or sound potentially not British from accessing healthcare, making passports a frequent demand when attempting to register for GP services) - or aren't UK passport holders themselves, so can't legally do it anyhow.

There is a whole sector of society that is excluded from having ID because of lack of money or opportunity to be able to obtain the things that are breezily declared by others on the thread to be things 'everybody' has. If they can't get hold of the things to be able to get medical treatment, open a bank account or collect a parcel from the Post Office, they aren't going to be likely to pay for them to be able to use social media - and with the number of data breaches that are reported, I don't think that putting your name, DOB, NI Number or passport, driving licence, etc, online is a good idea in any case.

How do you think your passport is currently held?
How do you think your driving licence is currently held?

They are both already kept digitally by different bodies that could be hacked, you need your passport to fly, you need your driving licence to drive, this would just be another form of ID authentication/ verification for accessing certain social media sites.

Obviously they would need to have the data stored as securely as the bodies holding all your other ID.

Quite. Maybe I shouldn't have expected any different on AIBU.

It's unlikely to even ever happen.

I don't have either, thanks. I don't fly (or travel overseas), I don't drive.
