To buy a navy velvet sofa with a hairy white cat?

Crazydogmumma · 14/03/2021 22:37

I am seriously considering buying a navy velvet sofa- but I have a white cat- who seem to shed all year, a (non shedding dog) and a messy family. It looks so luxurious- I really fancy the block of colour after all the neutrals greys around. Do you think velvet is a good choice- there are no messy small people around but we love to entertain (pre and hopefully post Covid).
YABU- Navy velvet is a crazy idea for a sofa
YANBU- life is short- have what you like and enjoy it (plus buy a lint roller to collect the cat fur)

Shall we say brave rather than unreasonable? Grin

I don't know. I think you should have what you like - but the worst hall and stair carpet I ever had was plain royal blue. It showed everything up.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/03/2021 22:39

nonononononono do NOT do it

I had a light grey fabric not velvet sofa and that was bad enough (went back to leather)

Blue velvet will show up everything (I know it's tempting I'd love a bottle green one but NO)

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/03/2021 22:41

Blue velvet will show everything up! I had a navy carpet once - never again!

This is exactly what I’m about to do - except I have a fluffy white dog!....my reasoning on navy is it’ll be easier to Hoover up the pet hair than scrub out mucky paw prints...and I also think the velvet may hide any sins better than a linen... I hope🤞🤞🤣!

Though it seems I’m wrong in the view of other posters😳😆

Ha! Cross post .....maybe I should have a rethink!

iwantavuvezela · 14/03/2021 22:48

Can you buy a navy velvet cushion as a way of testing this out

FaceyRomford · 14/03/2021 22:49

We had a long haired Burman who died 2 years ago. Still finding cat hair on the furniture. Don't do it.

Springersrock · 14/03/2021 22:50

I have one. I always wanted a blue velvet Chesterfield.

I have a hairy white dog rather than a cat

It’s fine - I just hoover it regularly. We did have it Scotchguarded

It is however, as uncomfortable as fuck

Crazydogmumma · 14/03/2021 22:51

Thank you for your replies- so navy velvet is a bad idea- wondering how I can encourage the cat to move out........Hmm

I changed my sofa to match my choc lab. Since then we’ve adopted two light coloured cats, two yellow labs and a white dog. It’s a nightmare! Never ending picking off hairs.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/03/2021 22:53

My cats shredded my fabric sofa. They've not touched my leather one. I'm not getting fabric again. We used to have a white cat. He was awesome, but his hair was a nightmare. And I had a black school uniform!

My vote's for INSANE.

Don't do it. Unless you like vacuuming, brushing and sticky rollering 22 out of 24 hours a day and still seeing white hairs embedded amongst the fibres.

megletsecond · 14/03/2021 22:57

I have navy velvet armchairs. However I have no pets.
You'd be mad to do it.

Marzipanfruit · 14/03/2021 22:58

You are deranged to even think of it. We have two black cats and white (black furry) bedlinen.

IsItAllOverYetPlease · 14/03/2021 23:01

I have a dark green velvet sofa with 2 cats, one is white. yes it does show uk the hair quite a lot but it depends on how much you care. it wipes off with a wet cloth really easily or is easily vacuumed. I had thought I'd have to get a leather sofa as they'd claw other material but I'm very glad we went with velvet and they haven't scratched it at all.

acquiescence · 14/03/2021 23:06

I have a navy sofa and a black and white cat. I clean it every morning with the handheld shark with pet attachment, it is charging in a nearby cupboard and takes less than 2 minutes. It means it’s always clean rather than covered in hidden fur. Go for it and just keep clean. I previously used a rubber brush which worked really well.

jaundicedoutlook · 14/03/2021 23:09

Have a blue velvet Chesterfield in the kitchen and a grey cat. The two get along just fine. Helps that the sofa is a little lighter than navy.

He likes to sleep along the backrest with legs over either side, a bit like he is a monorail carriage and the sofa back is the rail.

theliverpoolone · 14/03/2021 23:14

I'm thinking of getting a velvet sofa and have cats, so watching with interest. When I had a leather sofa it ended up with loads of little pin prick claw marks on the arms - at least hair can be removed!

NuclearDH · 14/03/2021 23:16

I have red velvet curtains and a white fluffy cat. The cat hair sticks to the curtains like Velcro....can only imagine a sofa would be 100x worse.

Crazydogmumma · 15/03/2021 00:11

Think I am about to start my next post called ‘Does anyone want a white hairy cat?’ Grin

I have purple velvet with 4 cats... it is in a room which is closed most of the time though!

In my case it shows the hair easily but it also hoovers off easily unlike some fabrics which really grip it.

The best fabric I've had for cats (which I've now had on 3 different sofas!) is the one currently available on the DFS freya. It pops up on others too - I have a sofology one with the same type of material - but it's very robust, doesn't get claw pulls or hold hair.

ConnieDobbs · 15/03/2021 08:18

Get one which has a heathered pattern rather than solid colour and it won't show the hair as badly

Bearnecessity · 15/03/2021 08:31

I have a navy sofa with a huge long haired jack Russell, it is alright Ibought a navy throw to go over it...it is easy to clean. Go for it...
