To buy a navy velvet sofa with a hairy white cat?

I am seriously considering buying a navy velvet sofa- but I have a white cat- who seem to shed all year, a (non shedding dog) and a messy family. It looks so luxurious- I really fancy the block of colour after all the neutrals greys around. Do you think velvet is a good choice- there are no messy small people around but we love to entertain (pre and hopefully post Covid).
YABU- Navy velvet is a crazy idea for a sofa
YANBU- life is short- have what you like and enjoy it (plus buy a lint roller to collect the cat fur)

Order a sample of the fabric and then test by rubbing it on the cat. I did this with curtain samples and quickly decided against velvet curtains!

I bought a navy blue velvet chair a couple of weeks ago, it is a thing of pure beauty (for the 5 minutes after I've hoovered it), I have a Dalmatian. I was going to get the matching sofa but have decided it will always look scruffy. The hair does come off easier than on fabric but is so visible.

@StatisticallyChallenged

I have purple velvet with 4 cats... it is in a room which is closed most of the time though!

In my case it shows the hair easily but it also hoovers off easily unlike some fabrics which really grip it.

The best fabric I've had for cats (which I've now had on 3 different sofas!) is the one currently available on the DFS freya. It pops up on others too - I have a sofology one with the same type of material - but it's very robust, doesn't get claw pulls or hold hair.

And I bet you still find cat hairs on the sofa that they don't go anywhere near?

A velvet sofa of any colour if you have a cat is likely to be an expensive mistake. As well as the colour contrast, your cat will probably see it as the world's greatest scratching post.

Don't do it.

I have a light olive green velvet sofa and a black cat. She only sleeps on it at night so I put a tea towel down. Honestly though it depends on how much you care about a pristine sofa. Also, Cushions and throw blankets are great for directing cat traffic.

We have similar, but also a furry pinkthrow the cat favours above all other surfaces. He sits on that on the sofa (and we’ve a spare so they rotate when one’s in the wash).

If anyone else sits on the throw he will sit and glare at them til they move or walk off in disgust.

We have lots of velvet furniture in different rooms & a black & white cat who loves to sleep on them & we just Hoover them v regularly.
We have teal velvet in one room - she has scratched the front of that sofa which is annoying. It's the oldest of them all & we're considering reupholstering it & it will be velvet again 100%

We have a 2 seater mid grey chesterfield style in the kitchen & she LOVES to lie along the back of this so she can look look out the window! It does show hairs but it Hoovers v easily & she's never scratched this one.

We have dark royal blue in another room & we try not to let her into this room v often though she makes it her life mission to get in there (hates a closed door!)

We have cream fabric in another room & she sleeps a lot in there. We have rugs on this sofa as the dog likes to sleep on it sometimes & its easy to throw rugs & cushion covers into the washing machine

I don't (clearly) don't regret having velvet- we love it & I would never ever want leather, it's just not for us so OP I say if you're prepared to look after it by hoovering it then I don't see a problem
