Why do people need to show off gifts on Facebook?

I don’t get it. Lovely seeing photos of people with Mums, messages etc. But why brag ‘I’ve been spoilt with my many presents’ then post photos of them? It just screams ‘Look at me!’ which I know Facebook is all about that but come on, it’s so needy!

YABU-people should put photos of their presents
YANBU-there’s no need to post photos of your presents

Showing off is the whole point of Facebook, indeed social media in general has made showing off acceptable in a way it never used to be. It's no coincidence that there has been a rise in mental health issues linked to low self esteem. No-one counts their blessings anymore they are too overwhelmed by having other people's blessings thrust in their faces (often with the sickening #blessed attached). If you don't like it stay off social media - easier said than done I know. Otherwise just call it what it is and either post a 'stop showing off' comment (I have actually done this - add a smiley face for full passive aggressive mode) or say it quietly to yourself to remind yourself what's actually happening here and have a bit of a laugh about it (which is what DH and I always do with the worst offenders). Also remember some people are only able to count their blessings if they actually record them on Facebook so cut those people a bit of slack.

Facebook is a narcissist’s paradise

Only if you are friends with narcissists.

Lanique · 15/03/2021 10:08

I came off FB a couple of years ago and I'm so much happier. You can't change the world but you can change yourself, OP.

thecatandthevicar · 15/03/2021 10:10

You are the one who decide if you translate a happy photo as bragging or showing off, or as someone close to you sharing things with you.

It reflects on you entirely, no one else.

If you can't see photos of a birthday party or a lovely holiday without feeling very miffed about it, you are quite sad.

Social media has only given you the impression you were entitled to express your opinion. In truth, no one cares if you are bitter you are missing out.

@SchrodingersImmigrant

That was properly funny Grin

...and now I want one of those Bailey's egg things that are currently being advertised.

Do you think it would be OK to post a picture of it?

This, 100%.

How a person interprets a relatively benign post on FB about Mother's Day says far, far more about that person than it does the poster.

@lljkk

If posting pics of your nice life events is tacky & boastful... what should be posted on Facebook?

Friend recently posted a lot about his cancer diagnosis & impending chemo. Is it tacky & boastful if he boasts about full remission in 5 yrs time especially if includes anything nice he does to celebrate -- or not simply because he "suffered" first?

What a ridiculous comparison!

No, dont do it. It's not acceptable at all.

I'm having a baby next month. Wonder if I'll be unfriended for "boasting" about my newborn when I share pics of them. 🤭

LucieStar · 15/03/2021 11:03

Case in point.

Absolutely not!
My neighbour's friend's uncle's mate died when he accidentally drowned in glass of Bailey's.
So insensitive!
Honestly. Sobbing and shaking here
#bekind ffs

InfoInfoInfo · 15/03/2021 11:18

@piglet81

Because they’re insecure and seeking validation.
Yep...

Look at me, someone loves me because....

Look at me I am doing ......

Look at my heavily filtered selfie and tell me I am beautiful......

Needy, insecure people

LucieStar · 15/03/2021 11:19

@SchrodingersImmigrant
😂😂

LucieStar · 15/03/2021 11:23

@FoonySpucker

If you post that Baileys egg, I for one might unfriend you. I might even post a passive aggressive comment. How unbelievably attention seeking! Hmm

lljkk · 15/03/2021 11:26

Is it ever permissible to put one's good news on facebook?
If not - why not?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/03/2021 11:31

@lljkk

Erm! No. Because someone else doesn't have any good news so you are just being selfish. Also, no bad news. Because that's just depressing others. No news are also a no, because you make others think you are ghosting them and they will end up with bad MH because of you. And fgs. Don't post any memes or pics. I mean like, you never know if someone will end up feeling offended. Think of othe people's feelings. It's not that bloody hard🙄
FoonySpucker · 15/03/2021 12:07

My neighbour's friend's uncle's mate died when he accidentally drowned in glass of Bailey's.

I am not sorry if I offended you.
Have you considered counselling?

@LucieStar only acceptable if your new arrival is photographed in a chocolate egg with lashings of Baileys and ice cream Grin

Of course no one cares but this is mumsnet, where you could say to loads of threads! I specifically said ‘big pile of gifts’ not what you described. I enjoy seeing people’s holiday photos Smile

Now all I can think about is Baileys 😩😂

LucieStar · 15/03/2021 12:25

Why are so many people Facebook friends with people they hate

So they can wait for them to post something that annoys them and come here to whinge about it. Obviously Grin

thecatandthevicar · 15/03/2021 12:30

I specifically said ‘big pile of gifts’ not what you described.

It's MN. According to some posters, anyone gifting more than a book, a toothbrush and a pair of socks to their own child is being vulgar, extravagant and will spoil them forever Grin

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 15/03/2021 12:35

Insecure people who need to show how much they are loved..

Oh god not a toothbrush?! Was it an electric one? How boasty. What about the people who can't afford one? Shock

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/03/2021 14:06

A toothbrush!
No trigger warning!? I lost all my teeth to dodgy teeth thieves 2 years ago. They then posted their pile of stolen teeth on facebook to boast😭 Seriously!
You all are honestly the worst!
