The vigil for Sarah Everard should be allowed to go ahead, just as the BLM protests were.

I'm frankly appalled that the police are opposing the vigil, it wasn't so long ago that people were flocking to central London in their thousands to protest on behalf of black lives matter.

Black lives do matter, and women's lives do too.

People tightly packed together - definitely not. But I thought the BLM protests shouldn’t have been allowed.

PicsInRed · 13/03/2021 19:56

The police should be mortified at themselves, they're disgraceful. I supported the BLM protests and I support this vigil protest also.

As an older woman it is so heartening to watch all these young women find their anger in unison, confronting our fucking egregious police as one. By God, it gives me hope - just look at these women, they are marvellous. ❤

ILoveToads · 13/03/2021 20:03

I worked with women who have been survivors of assault, rape, domestic abuse and trafficking. I would rather the protestors donate to relevant causes.

Most of the people I see on social media who are angry about the protests being cancelled are the same people who never seem to engage in any fundraising or awareness campaigns being promoted in their area.

I have spoken to many who are too busy with other things. That's fine, but a protest isn't as useful as actual engagement in a cause.

Shootingstar2014 · 13/03/2021 20:12

YADNU it’s disgraceful especially when my husband has just shown me footage on SM of a huge bunch of football supporters from another part of the country ‘making a weekend of it’ currently in Trafalgar Square prior to a big game tomorrow in London. Not sure how that’s apparently acceptable?

PicsInRed · 13/03/2021 20:14

Protest is literally actual engagement.

Chanjer · 13/03/2021 20:16

I don't see what the BLM protests have to do with anything but giving the police a say in it is fucking garbage

Shnuffles · 13/03/2021 20:16

The BLM protests weren't a good idea, but it was politically incorrect to say so. I'm sure the police weren't happy about the protests, but it wasn't easy to oppose them, given the circumstances.

From a practical point of view, will this vigil make any real difference? Maybe it will make a few people feel better, but I can't believe it will change anything.

Donotfeedthebears · 13/03/2021 20:18

Just seen a video on Twitter of Met Police officers pulling women by their hair at the vigil. Nice.

Baluchistan95 · 13/03/2021 20:22

@QueenBodicea

No, holding the vigil should be postponed until lockdown has ended. There is still a risk of transmission outside and encouraging a crowd to gather at this time is irresponsible.
I agree. I can't believe how irresponsible some posters on here are. I really do hope that arrests were made and FPN's issued. I wonder how many of those attending this silly vigil stood at their door virtue signaling(clapping for the NHS). I do hope the PTB will show the same leniency next Saturday when the Freedom March (anti lockdown) protest takes place. Shame on those who deliberately chose to ignor the law and put our wonderful NHS at risk.
Donotfeedthebears · 13/03/2021 20:23

I’ve never clapped the NHS and don’t think they are wonderful. At all.

SabrinaMorningstar · 13/03/2021 20:30

I voted YABU because I don't think any public gatherings should be going ahead. I don't think they should have gone ahead last year either whether it's BLM, the Clapham Common vigil or the football idiots in Glasgow. And I think people need simple messaging otherwise they think the rules are a lie and a waste of time.

It's not that I don't support the cause. I do. I've found this week very difficult, reading women's stories and relating to so many of them. I'm angry. So bloody angry with the men mocking what has happened and yy I understand why the police saying this couldn't go ahead feels like heaping more insult on top. But, tbh I want us to do more with the anger than lighting candles or holding a vigil. I'm with Suzanne Moore on this. I want to burn everything down not shine a light on it.

I just don't want to do it in a way that encourages idiots to flout lockdown using this going ahead as an excuse.

👍 If there’d been one near us, I’d have gone. And the live stream of three police officers wrestling a woman to the ground is just awful.
whittingtonmum · 13/03/2021 20:49

Yes. Can't believe they arrested the women at the vigil in the way they did. The Met need to urgently stop digging given the massive hole they are in.

They are supposedly policing by public consent. Good luck with rebuilding that trust with the women of London. Dear oh dear.

I personally will be lighting a candle on my doorstep at 9.30 pm. But I think those who really felt they needed to be in Clapham Common today should have been given a safe option to do so.

They were breaking the law. Why is that so hard to understand?

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/12/is-the-sarah-everard-vigil-ban-part-of-creeping-curbs-on-the-right-to-protest

“ Does the government want to curtail the right to protests?

Human rights campaigners say yes. They are concerned that ministers are using the pandemic as a pretext to severely weaken the right to protest. They are particularly alarmed by this week’s police, crime, sentencing and courts bill, which would give the home secretary power to create laws to define “serious disruption” that police could then use to impose conditions on protests.”

colouringindoors · 13/03/2021 21:38

I've just seen the pictures from Twitter. I'm horrified. I used to work for the Met, I've always defended them. But this, THIS?!!!

PicsInRed · 13/03/2021 21:41

Here are the police. PROTECTING us.

The vigil for Sarah Everard should be allowed to go ahead, just as the BLM protests were.
PurpleDaisies · 13/03/2021 21:56

It’s just awful seeing those pictures.

What on earth were the police thinking?

doubleshotespresso · 13/03/2021 21:59

They couldn't have got this more wrong. In all honesty I had mixed feelings about the vigil but not for a second because I thought this would be the outcome.
Now I see how vital it was it went ahead.

tttigress · 13/03/2021 22:01

Well the BLM protests should not have gone ahead. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

WhereverIlaymyhat2021 · 13/03/2021 22:11

Her poor poor family, I’ve just watched the BBC News it was 5 minutes of coverage 4 segments only on the 5th segment were her family mentioned it was all about the vigil erupting into violence and other peoples feelings.

No protests should go ahead though, should they? Two wrongs don't make a right. We're in lockdown.
