That women of colour face a combination of racism and misogyny

...that is a very toxic cocktail.

And are often not supported by a large section of white women (who are often part of the racism problem) and a large section of BAME men (who are often part of the sexism problem)

And attractive, successful ethnic minority women are brutally targeted, often to the detriment of their me al health. Really glad for Meghan Markle, Serena Williams and Jameela for bringing this to the fore.

Do you agree?

Yes, I agree. It's shit.

ghostyslovesheets · 12/03/2021 10:30

yanbu

Black women, gay women, disabled women - all face a double barrelled assault

cadburyegg · 12/03/2021 10:30

Yes and what bothers me the most is white people trying to speak over them and not believe what they are saying. Particularly white men

Haydugi · 12/03/2021 10:30

And are often not supported by a large section of white women

I think it’s far more nuanced than simply blaming white women. Women of colour also can face racism from other black women and, more often black men.

Sprining · 12/03/2021 10:31

Thanks Alexa

So glad Piers is off. Jameela is also saying she felt suicidal with the toxic coverage.

😃 it took me a while to pull together in my head.

Agree with pp that other isms, ageism, disabilities are hue issues too.

A combination of toxic ‘isms’ can be far more than the sum of its parts

I can't comment on that, but I do think that white women (and of course white men) need to do more to address this. We need to properly face up to the problem and own it. The racism on these boards in recent days has been depressing, but sadly, it probably isn't at all surprising to those who have to deal with that level of hate, denial and gaslighting on a regular basis.

The real question is what are we going to do about it.

C130 · 12/03/2021 10:37

I agree.

Jameela? I mean I would never deny her personal experience of racism or misogyny, but in terms of the latter she's just as much part of the problem as she is a victim of it. She has actively encouraged 'anti-terf' sentiments, which brings about a huge amount of abuse and threat of violence against GC women. She doesn't give a shit for the issues faced by biological women due to her need to be Queen of the TRA.
DebbieGetsTheJobDone · 12/03/2021 10:39

Not on MN apparently.

I got accused of trying to invent problem and be the problem when I pointed out the casual and constant racism. Apparently, it doesn't exist and you will be pleased to know the UK is the least racist place in the world. It's all in our pretty little heads.

Sprining · 12/03/2021 10:39

While people turn one another within communities, I think women who have faced the toxic combination of racism and sexism at the same time, know how utterly debilitating it can be.

And how lonely it is. Successful ethnic monitory women get the brunt of “who do you think you are?” type bullying from maj women and men

I don't k is if I agree, but I really dislike Serena as a person. Actually got to see how she behaves in real life and her superior, condescending attitude was quite staggering. Couldn't care less what colour of skin she has, I don't like people who act like she did that day.

I hope it's still ok to not like someone because of the person they are rather than their skin colour!

SomethingAboutNothing · 12/03/2021 10:49

Yes, Kimberlé Crenshaw created the term intersectionality in America to explain the problem.

Sprining · 12/03/2021 10:54

Serena’s ‘Superior condescendingly attitude’

Do you mean confidence and assurance that comes from being successful and at the top of your field?

How many women are outraged, angry and fed up of feeling unsafe, and have had enough of male violence against them. They are making their feelings known, quite rightly, and want change. How many of these same women though are happy to dismiss, deny and gaslight numerous posters on here who have said they experience racism on the regular. MN is rife with racism, as is society. It is not down to poc to fix the problem of racism.

I witnessed this first hand when my very pregnant black friend was called fat, and told she needed to take more pride in herself by a (guessing) 70ish year old black woman as we sat down on the train.

The reason this woman commented was because my friend was out of breath - because we had ran for the train!

My friend just got up and moved seats and all I could think to do was say 'she's pregnant you rude woman' and follow my friend.

I was so gutted for her as she was struggling with the weight gain and she actually booked fabulous but couldn't see it herself.

I’ve heard that a lot too !
C130 · 12/03/2021 11:00

ReefTeeth where was there any racism in what you just posted? Did not take long for the usual whataboutary to begin, did it.

Fridget · 12/03/2021 11:03

I agree Jameela Jamil displays some disgusting attitudes but that doesn’t negate the fact that she suffers racism and sexism, and that’s never ok.

Absolutely not, of course. JJ may not care that GC women are trying to protect her as a biological woman, that includes from sexism and misogynistic behaviour shown in the media. That doesn't mean she doesn't help matters by perpetuating idealisms that lead to women being subjected the the same abuse that causes her such mental distress. It's about time she accepts her role as part of the problem in how she uses her platform, as we accept that the way society treats her for her race and female biology is utterly reprehensible.

No, I mean rude and condescending. Plenty more successful women in her field with much more pleasant attitude.

Yes that's usually what 'they' accuse black women of being because they dare have confidence, assurance and are direct.

Sorry, not everyone sees being self-deprecating, insecure, passive-aggressive and polite to your face but nasty to your back as virtue.
