Leavers hoodies timing - AIBU?

Totally first world problem here but just looking for an anonymous sense check.

We're in Scotland. Parent to a DC in P7 (final year of primary) at an independent school. He moved there in Aug 2019 so still getting settled into school customs, what with the interruption of Covid lockdowns and all.

Email arrives today to order leavers hoodies. Order closing date 4 May with a 3 week lead time on deliveries so presumably we will only get the hoodies at the start of June, so a month before the end of the school year. Not much time to wear them then.

Meantime the local school kids have them already, and most other schools I know of around here have them at least for the final term.

What is the spectrum of traditions with leavers hoodies? For how long in the final school year would you expect to have them? I am from abroad but even so we had a special blazer (!) we wore for the entire final year.

Hampshire here.
The dc's primary school does them around June time but they aren't allowed to wear then to school.

Tragicroundabout · 12/03/2021 08:29

We're in Scotland too - my P7 son has had his since before Christmas. They can choose to wear them to school if they want but it's not compulsory. We weren't asked which size we wanted, the school just ordered a small adult size which has worked fine and left them with lots of room to grow. It's quite common here to see kids wearing their hoodies for quite some time after they leave school.

DD got hers just before her year 4 residential which was just before May half term, so that they could wear them on that, but after that they were only allowed to wear them for the last week of school in July.

newnormal99 · 12/03/2021 08:30

Mine got hers for residential. Not allowed to wear in school apart from last week of term.

That coincided with a heatwave so half of them looked like they would faint with heat but they could wear them so they were!

Glitterblue · 12/03/2021 08:30

Oh and she's year 6 now and still wears it.

Hankunamatata · 12/03/2021 08:31

Ours never wore them in school. Ds is high school and.still wears his

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 12/03/2021 08:40

we never had in primary school, but the secondary school leavers hoody is very popular amongst uni students (and beyond) - I'm in a uni city and there are plenty of "18" and "19" hoodies around, and even some older ones. DD2 graduated last summer, and occasionally wears her "16" one.

yumscrumfatbum · 12/03/2021 08:45

Last day. A few years ago parents campaigned to have them earlier. It resulted in lots getting mixed up and some getting lost. Ours have the list of all names on but not not the childs own name larger. They went back to last day issuing!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/03/2021 08:47

Behaviour dips when ours start being worn, sadly.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/03/2021 08:47

Not by all, obviously. But by enough that it means we disvourage them until as late as possible.

OscarWildesCat · 12/03/2021 08:48

Same as PP, DD getting her next week, not allowed to wear to school although when DS (now S3) was at the same stage with a different HT he was allowed to wear as uniform for the last school year. I’ve accepted there won’t be much wear out of it, it’s more of a souvenir of Primary school.

maddy68 · 12/03/2021 08:50

Kids generally aren't allowed to wear them while in school so teh timing is fine. It's for when they leave

MazekeenSmith · 12/03/2021 08:52

Mine still wears his and he's in year 7. (First year of secondary) I saw kids wearing them all over the summer holidays. They didn't get them til the last week of term here.

minniemoocher · 12/03/2021 08:55

Dd wears hers from high school (year 6-year9) as an adult!

BobsDouble · 12/03/2021 08:59

Mine got his in the last week of school. Never allowed to wear at school. It was big and he still loves it and wears it 2 years later.

LaceyBetty · 12/03/2021 09:05

I've never seen them done before June. They celebrate the "leaving".

MrsFin · 12/03/2021 09:10

DD is 20. She still wears hers for jogging, gym etc.

AChickenCalledDaal · 12/03/2021 09:14

Ditto MrsFin my first year university student is still wearing their year 11 hoodie quite regularly. They must be very comfy.

Different with primary as they keep growing, but it's always been an and of term thing around here at both age groups.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 12/03/2021 09:15

At dcs school, they get them at a leavers assembly in the last week of school. Mine still wear them a few years later (ordered size 12-14)

Laissonslesjoliesfemmes · 12/03/2021 09:24

I'm another one who didn't realise this was thing and has fond memories of signing each other's shirts in marker pen on the last day! It sounds as though they get used so that's good, but I do feel sad when I see yet another little ritual turned into a commercial transaction.

bridgetreilly · 12/03/2021 09:38

On the last day when they actually leave, obviously.

NeverEnoughCats · 12/03/2021 09:51

Both of my DDs got their leavers hoodies in the first term of P7. They were the same colour/had the same logo as the school uniform, and they were allowed to wear them throughout P7. Our PTA paid for one, and parents had the option to buy a second. It is a small village school though, and I don’t know of any other local schools that do the same.

FedNlanders · 12/03/2021 10:00

Mine got them last day of school

YoniAndGuy · 12/03/2021 10:02

First term here so they wear them through final year. But I can see that traditions are different! Look on it as a commemorative item ,not a school uniform thing?

Tragicroundabout · 12/03/2021 10:03

Although ours wear their hoodies for much of P7 they also do the signing shirt thing.
