Getting too thin?

mmner31 · 11/03/2021 10:47

Hello Mumsnetters,

12 months ago I started losing weight through IF (16:8) and reducing portion sizes of meals. I also started walking more, which in turn lead me into starting jogging. I'm 5ft7 and I started at 13st9 and I'm now 10st 2. DP has expressed his concern that I am starting to look too thin.

I have explained that I still fast (for the health benefits) but do eat considerably more than I did when trying to lose weight. To be honest I do not wish to lose anymore weight as I am a healthy weight for my height.

Has anyone actually got too thin and then had a comment made by a DP/DH or even a close friend/family member/?

I went from almost 12 stone to just under 9 at 5'6 - intermittent fasting like you. Had a lot of too thin comments but I think its just surprise at your changed shape. Now everyone is used to it I dont hear it anymore!

I'm 8st 11lbs at 5ft 8 and don't look too thin at all. I'm a size 6/8 depending on the brand so not like a 0. I can't imagine you look too thin at that weight, I would imagine that the people telling you you are too thin are too fat themselves....

mmner31 · 11/03/2021 13:13

@Ploughingthrough thats a fabulous loss. You must feel so much healthier. How long have you kept it off?

Also congrats on the weight loss! That's awesome and v hard during lockdown

Wow! It just shows how we all carry weight differently

@FootSticklebricks I'm of a similar build to you, and when I was younger threads like this would have made me feel paranoid. I was very self conscious about my size, and was easily hurt by slightly bitchy comments about weight.

The reality is I have a tiny frame, tiny ribs, tiny hips, I'm naturally slight. My DM recently told me that my great aunts on my DF's side all had my build, so it makes sense now. She is big, not even remotely fat but her ribs are twice mine, and her shoulders much much broader. My dsis takes after her. There is a lot more to size than is someone over or under weight.

Ploughingthrough · 11/03/2021 13:15

mmner31 I've just hit the year mark! Haven't found it hard to keep off - like you I follow the fasting in general but eat a little more than I did when I was losing. I'm happy with my weight now and cant imagine being able to eat the amount I used to anyway!

HosannainExcelSheets · 11/03/2021 13:16

Yes, but I genuinely am too thin because of a heath condition. I have not intended to loose weight, but I'm 55kg at 1.70m tall. I'd like to gain weight and find "too thin" comments quite hard to deal with.

My parents are very careful to only comment that I'm looking better after I've managed to gain weight.

I think commenting on other people's weight is generally quite rude.

HarrietOh · 11/03/2021 13:16

I am 5ft 5 and used to be around 9st 5, people were always commenting on my weight, constant comments of being thin, skinny etc. People would actually pinch my waist and remark on how slim I was. It was really annoying! I'm now about 10st 2, but not sure of any potential comments now due to lockdown.

mmner31 · 11/03/2021 13:18

@HarrietOh well theres only DP who's seen me shrink. When lockdown ends, no doubt I'll get lots of comments

Well done on losing the weight OP! You’ve done great. I’m 5ft 6 and 8st 9lbs and I wouldn’t describe myself as skinny (although slim I guess, size 10/12) and the only person who ever comments negatively on my weight is my Mother in Law who tells me I’m too thin but she is massively overweight so I don’t really take any notice. How is your DH’s weight?

notalwaysalondoner · 11/03/2021 13:19

It’s probably just he’s not used to it - over 10 stone at 5’7” is not thin. I’m 9 stone at 5’6” and definitely not thin, slim, yes, but not thin. Don’t let the fact he’s uncomfortable with change impact your improved health, he’ll get used to it. As long as you’re not continuing to lose more weight than you want to, or going below a BMI definition of normal, then there’s nothing to worry about.

Opal93 · 11/03/2021 13:19

I don’t agree with personal remarks about weight, calling people “too fat” or “too thin”. If what he means is the weight loss has gotten to the stage where you are below a healthy weight for your height it is likely coming from a place of concern. While I wouldn’t tell anyone they are “too thin,” if someone had lost weight and was in the underweight bracket I would advise against this as number one it’s incredibly difficult to sustain and number two it is not healthy. But you are still within normal range, so if you are happy with your weight it is up to you to stay there

Honestly that is amazing. You may need to give me some maintenace tips. I sometimes worry if I'll keep it off. Like I keep thinking that I'll wake up one morning and nothing will fit.

Bloody good work OP! I'm also doing the 16:8 fasting and have so far lost 1 stone since January.

You don't sound too thin at all, you sound perfectly healthy. As long as you're eating a balanced diet and not starving yourself I don't see what the issue is.

Hoppinggreen · 11/03/2021 13:21

My DH has just lost 3 stone on Keto. I’m really pleased for him but I miss his lovely bum and I do think he’s getting a bit scrawny looking around his neck/face. It’s definitely aged him.
I have suggested he not lose any more now

Parents/in laws always comment on something. To be honest not weight related, but they always seem to "think" they know best about a certain topic that comes up in conversation.

DP is 5'10 and I believe he wears a 34 jean and large shirt/t-shirt. I do the washing haha. Not sure what he weighs though

@MyDcAreMarvel but you know full well that was a nasty comment. It wasn't even thinly veiled. Women supporting women Hmm

Ploughingthrough · 11/03/2021 13:24

mmner31 I used to feel like that. You have lost so much weight (well done!). I think the trick is to accept a healthy weight range- I tend to work in kilos and accept anything between 56-57.5. If I creep up any further then I would do something about it. And conversely any lower and my face looks gaunt and I feel hungry all the time. If you have changed your lifestyle, which it sounds like you have, then you wont put it all back on. You sound like a perfect weight for your height and your DH will get used to it! !

IM0GEN · 11/03/2021 13:24

I think you need to reset your priorities. The most important thing is your health - physical and mental. Is that good ? how do you feel about yourself ? Are you happy with how your body functions and how it looks?

I’m guessing you are as you have made such an effort to lose weight and keep it off. Many of us here know how hard that is.

Your husband’s opinion is just that. It’s no more wrong or right than him preferring to wear green shirts rather than blue. He’s entitled to think or feel what he likes. It doesn’t need to affect you in any way, unless you think that you ARE are fact too thin AND it’s a health issue.

And you know that you are not.

What is your husbands view about your health? Your reduced risk of various cancers, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure ? About how you feel less tired and enjoy being active ?

changi · 11/03/2021 13:24

Does anyone else who's naturally fairly skinny find these threads make you feel worried? I'm 5'6" and have weighed around 8.5 stone,

I'm the same height and actually prefer being around 8st 4 so, no, these threads don't make me worried at all. Nobody has ever told me that I look too skinny. I'm not skinny, I'm slim.

The only comments I get are compliments.

Dixiechickonhols · 11/03/2021 13:24

I lost 5 stone in 8 months and at at end my mum (who is healthy weight) did say don’t lose more you are starting to look thin in face - I was no where near underweight probably bmi 21. I lost a bit more before a big holiday in 2019 and looking back at airport photos I’m a bit too thin for me I look better with a few more lb on. So much depends on body type - healthy bmi is a range 18-25. I have big frame/hands and feet and so bottom end wouldn’t suit me. I’m happier and look better bmi 22 ish.

I've read that some men also take it to the extreme. Especially when they start to see abs etc. Also fitting back into smaller clothing is another

My first thought reading OP's very first post was.. he misses your larger boobs. You'll just have to show him how much of a sex goddess you are regardless of body size.

likeamillpond · 11/03/2021 13:27

Funny how family and so called friends never say
I think you're getting too fat!
Theyre quite happy to see people pile on the pounds.
Their faux concern only surfaces at the precise moment a person reaches their target weight.

Is your DH overweight?
Misery and being overweight loves company.
