Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

@Beetlewing

I'm left handed. Practically everything
DH gave me a beautiful left handed bread knife for my birthday. It has changed my life.
PussyCatEatingEasterEggs · 10/03/2021 17:27

@FreekStar

My bugbear is cans the aren't designed so they stack ( Heinz baked beans I'm looking at you!!!!!)
This, and the fact they don't taste as nice as they used to, is why I'm on Sains own brand beans. I have a limited toleration to broken toes when the tins fall out of the cupboard. Grin
NotFabulousDarling · 10/03/2021 17:28

Johnson's Baby bath range. The bubble bath and shampoo and whatnot. What bloody idiot designed the new bottles in a shape that makes it impossible to hold them with wet hands?

NotFabulousDarling · 10/03/2021 17:31

@JaninaDuszejko No way!! That's why I can't ever cut bread? OMG I thought I was just shit at cutting bread! It never occurred to me the knife was right-handed!

bettertimesarecomingnow · 10/03/2021 17:32

Anything packed in that awful strong plastic packaging that needs scissors to open or a sharp knife - it's usually so strong that you end up stabbing it and yourself

And then you open it and the packaging is so sharp you get cut on the way to the bin!

Grim

*WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead

Sainsbury's spices/herbs have teaspoonable openings. I literally do my weekly shopping there because of this*

Their bloody baking powder and bicarbonate is impossible to get access to. I have to open it from the bottom!

AdobeWanKenobi · 10/03/2021 17:34

Come on surely you've heard of cling film?

Come on, surely you've heard on cutting back on plastics use?

hangsangwitch · 10/03/2021 17:35

Any little bottle of liquid, like essential oils etc, that have label all the way around them, so you cant seen how much liquid is in them.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/03/2021 17:36

There was once an entire thread on here devoted to the crapness of stainless steel teapots that you get in cafes, and how they dribble water/ tea everywhere every single time without fail!

And they do

TupilaLilium · 10/03/2021 17:37

Manufacturers that make all their face or hair products in identical packaging (serums for face and eyes/ shampoo and conditioner) and the only difference is the words in tiny font.

I am in the shower or washing my face. I do not have my glasses on. Give me something obvious please.

I am have to write all over these products with sharpie so I know what they are without my glasses.

kunterbunting · 10/03/2021 17:39

Ironing boards that have a stupid metal thing at the end of them instead of a completely flat board. The iron cable just tangles itself up in the wire thing every time you try to use it. Invented by someone who has never used an iron.

Unescorted · 10/03/2021 17:39

@NoProblem123

All microwaves have their door hinged on the left hand side - I need mine on the right hand side as it’s sits in a right hand corner, but oooohhh noooo they don’t make them. This means I have to Periscope over the door 😠
I have one that is hinged at the bottom. It is a shit microwave but there might be others out there.
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 10/03/2021 17:40

@AlanThePig

Also, its 2021. WHY are we still fighting cans of corned beef with keys? WHY!!?

Also, has anyone ever successfully peeled back bacon film using the little lifted bit on the end without it breaking? I haven't.

I LOVE the corn beef tins!

However, having not eaten meat for 30 years, I have to get my fix when visiting friends & family! It's been a bad year...

shutterteal · 10/03/2021 17:41

Neals Yard bottles. Look beautiful but nothing comes out of them. You have to thump and thump to get a smidgeon of conditioner etc out.
I don't buy them but get them as gifts and then feel guilty that I haven't used them, cos I can't!

profpoopsnagle · 10/03/2021 17:42

Any website where you cannot use the eye thing to check your password. It usually results in me resetting my password every time, because of fat fingers.

FreezerBird · 10/03/2021 17:42

@FreekStar

Food Bank volunteers across the land are with you on that one. Causes an unseemly amount of swearing when you're trying to shelve eleventy billion cans of soup/beans.
Calmasasleepycat · 10/03/2021 17:42

For those with Spice jars that you can’t get a teaspoon into, try using a half teaspoon measure twice. 😊

mommybunny · 10/03/2021 17:43

@Exhausted4ever

Come on surely you've heard of cling film?

Of course I’ve “heard of cling film”. But I don’t see the sense in using more disposable plastic to keep fresh something that is already stored in plastic? Confused

Bamaluz · 10/03/2021 17:43

Toothpaste tubes with a little bit of foil you need to peel off to open.
The foil comes away leaving clear plastic underneath so no toothpaste comes out, I have to peel this off with tweezers because there's no way of gripping it with my fingers.
Drives me mad, I'm either tired at bedtime or trying to get ready for work in the morning and have to fiddle around with something totally unnecessary because it already has a lid, and comes in a sealed box.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 10/03/2021 17:43

The location of headlight bulbs. Who looked at that and thought "mmm that seems accessible enough".

My county council's website...forms...anything IT really.

Mellonsprite · 10/03/2021 17:44

My Epson home printer. It’s shit. I LOATHE it.
The paper jams, the paper feed is actually inaccessible and and it doesn’t recognise when you’ve reloaded paper and still refuses to print. The inks - FFS I could write an essay on how bad and inconvenient it is when it flatly refuses to print due to inks.
The display is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it and it asks you to press ‘yes’ when there’s no ‘yes’, when it means ‘ok’.
I hate the bastard thing.

Mellonsprite · 10/03/2021 17:44

And if that wasn’t enough it goes offline all the time.

traintrain · 10/03/2021 17:45

I've a Skoda and this annoys me so much Id never buy another. Click the key fob once to open the driver door and twice to open the other doors.

WHY WHY WHY do you know how many times I've pressed it twice and it somehow still has not unlocked the required doors? Do you know how many times I've been lugged down carrying kids in the piss down rain only for the back door to refuse to open even though I've definitely clicked twice? All the time. Do you know how many times I click twice then nip out to get a secret chocolate bar out of the glove box only to be presented with a locked door? Constantly.

I just click manically at it now hoping it will receive the signal at some fucking point this century and I'll be able to put my kid in the car. It makes me so angry!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/03/2021 17:46

BloodyHamaBeads, that’s Sainsbury isn’t it? Look what I’ve had to do!😡

Open them upside down. The top doesn’t open even though it’s meant to!

Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?
XingMing · 10/03/2021 17:47

@SplendidSuns1000... I can help you clean your coffee/spice grinder!

Between using it for different things, you grind a dessertspoonful of rice. And throw it away, then wipe with kitchen paper. It removes any lingering smells.

Don't thank me: thank my DS, who came across this top tip on a chef's YouTube channel. It is a small thing I know, but I was ridiculously pleased to be told.
