Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

The Marmite jar complaint made me think of SunPat peanut butter and its weird shape that won’t let me scrape it all out.

@Whatisthisfuckery

Tresemme shampoo and conditioner bottles. Too fat to hold, too stiff the squeeze and an absolute fucking bastard if you drop one on your toe.
And you can't get the lid off to get the last 20% of the contents out. I have worked out a method now which is to decant the whole lot into an empty Head and Shoulders pump bottle, but it does mean balancing them upside down by the sink for a day or two.

I've never understood why they put blocks of cheese in the packets they do. The opening is always along the longest length/top so you end up having to take the whole item out of the bag just to cut a couple of slices. An opening on the side would make much more sense.

woodhill · 10/03/2021 17:54

@gretagreengrapes

The fact you have to hold down the power button on the Dyson cordless the entire time you're using it.

Also, the cutlery rack in the dishwasher that nothing seems to fit in properly!

Yes I hated that aspect, Bosch one has a switch
lollipoprainbow · 10/03/2021 17:54

I've often thought why isn't there a button in the car that shuts all the windows ! As well as the buttons to open/shut all the individual ones? Maybe some cars have this ??

LockdownIsDragging · 10/03/2021 17:54

@mildlymiffed

Douwe Egberts coffee bottle. Impossible to lever the lid off easily.

Only buy it as it's dp's fave. But now refuse to make him a cuppa as it is the most irritating lid I've ever come across. Who designs these things?!!

They loosen off with time so when I open a new one I keep the old lid and throw out the new one.
Saoirse7 · 10/03/2021 17:55

Bags of flour.

Why? They spill everywhere, even before it's open. Why not sell them in a similar container to baby formula??

LakieLady · 10/03/2021 17:55

My oven. The drop-down doors slope away from you when fully opened, so you can't rest things on the open door.

feistyoneyouare · 10/03/2021 17:56

We once received a set of oil and vinegar dispensers for Christmas, the kind that are like small long-necked bottles with stoppers.

Getting oil and vinegar out of them wasn't at all problematic.

Distinguishing between the two, on the other hand - given that the manufacturers had put both 'Oil' and 'Vinegar' on BOTH bottles - was distinctly tricky. Grin Grin

Frozenintime · 10/03/2021 17:59

John Freida hair conditioner. The tubes have crimped, sharp edges which hurt like hell when the tube lands on your foot in the shower

TorchesTorches · 10/03/2021 17:59

Bike tyre pumps. The kind you put your feet on and pump up and down. My boobs get in the way. You basically have to be flat chested to use them, or a man. I always wanted to find normal hand pumps as I can use them, but DH bought a bloody foot one. So he has to pump all the tyres up.

0blio · 10/03/2021 17:59

@DynamoKev No, it is a French one though and I'll try that, thanks. Doesn't matter about the Bluetooth as I cant get it to work anyway Grin

XingMing · 10/03/2021 18:02

@lollipoprainbow, press the locking button on your key fob for double the normal time, and it should close all the windows. HTH.

Tubbytele · 10/03/2021 18:03

The 500 ml Johnson and Johnson baby lotions have changed from a normal lid to a pump version. Absolutely dreadful as can't get the rest of the lotion out when you reach the end! Why change something doesnt need fixing!

Eckhart · 10/03/2021 18:08

Why does toilet roll rip easily down each piece, so that you can easily get a thin strip that makes you inexplicably homicidal? It (like all paper) doesn't rip easily the other way. Why don't they just do away with perforations, and have the rippy direction in the direction we want to fecking well rip the stuff??

Hagqueen · 10/03/2021 18:09

Havent RTFT, but highly recommend M&S spice jars, aesthetically pleasing and teaspoon friendly! Also love I can get things like seasame in smaller quantities.

YouokHun · 10/03/2021 18:11

@gracelessladyhottramp

Expensive foundation in a glass pump bottle - there's no way to get the last but out!!
This^. I no longer buy any cosmetic or skincare item in a sealed pump dispenser because I can’t afford to chuck away 5-10% of a costly product that I’m already paying over the odds for to cover the cost of the packaging!

There’s no way of knowing if the container has been properly filled (usually pump dispenser packaging is opaque), or how much product you’re really getting, it’s usually a tiny amount and the walls of the container are thick enough to give the impression you’re getting more for your money than you really are. I know it says the quantity on the packaging but whatever quantity it claims you need to minus 10% to account for the unreachable product! Drives me mad.

OliveHenry · 10/03/2021 18:12

You can usually stop a teapot dripping by rubbing some nose grease under the edge of the spout. It sounds disgusting but it works!

Just rub your finger down the side of your nose to get some delightfully named "nose grease" or "nasal sebum" or "squalene" then rub it on the underside of the spout, right on the edge.

I was dubious about this when DP suggested it, but it really does work!

SleepingStandingUp · 10/03/2021 18:14

Most baby changes. Set behind heavy doors / in awkward places / through several doors / with no loo

KitesFlyingInTheWind · 10/03/2021 18:16

childproof bottles. in general.
Damned if any adult I know can open them!
(Before anyone says it, yes. know the function is vital and don't complain too much!)

YouokHun · 10/03/2021 18:21

I have little makeup spatulas to get the last bits out

How do you get the pump dispenser lid off @Pinkflipflop85? I have a really nice foundation in a glass bottle with a pump dispenser lid but the lid is completely sealed onto the glass. I can see what I calculate is about £10 of product left that I can’t get at. Won’t buy again!

PepeSilviaDoesNotExist · 10/03/2021 18:21

Just here to plug Sainsbury’s spice jars. I love them and they look nice too

Thomasina79 · 10/03/2021 18:21

I buy the more expensive Sarsons vinegar because it has the sprinkler bit.

But then I decant it into my vinegar bottle!

Ps in all other aspects of my life I am quite sensible and rational, though to be fair the sarsons one does taste nicer on my chip shop fish and chips,

Bettina500 · 10/03/2021 18:22

Anything like hand cream that has a screw lid, so you have to try and screw the lid back on with a handful of cream or greasy hands.

Conditioner/hair mask sachets that won't tear open so you're stuck in the shower with wet hands and no scissors to hand.

The red Tear Here strips on biscuit packets that either snap off before the pack opens, or split the packaging in half.

ILoveShula · 10/03/2021 18:25

My blender has a button that you need to keep pressing when using it which isn't great.
