Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

The bleeper thingy I bought that has fobs to attach to keys, phone and anything else you might lose.
The remote control bit of the unit is so bloody tiny, I'm bound to lose that.
And the instructions were too tiny, so I haven't set it up yet. AND I lost my keys again today.

You measure your herbs 😱 I just Chuck things in like I’m some kind of culinary genius, which is probably why no one likes my cooking 😂

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll, it works on VWs but eek.... I live in the middle of nowhere and rarely bother to lock the car at all. It's ancient, high mileage and rurally dented, and usually it only contains shopping and dog poo bags.

SnugglySnerd · 10/03/2021 20:04

The government tax free childcare website. Everything about it is irritating and unhelpful. I have actually wondered if they make it difficult on purpose so people give up and pay their nursery fees without asking the government to contribute!

@DearTeddyRobinson

Ugh so much. Agree with the spice jar and bacon (indeed any other ham, salami etc) packet stupidity. The garden hose. We have a Hozelock hose and a Hozelock reel. The connectors on the reel are positioned so stupidly, that you can't connect the hose properly. Hence, drips every time. So frigging annoying. Dyson handheld. Yes it does an adequate job hoovering up crumbs etc but why can you only operate it with one finger? Why can't you leave it on without keeping your finger on the button the whole time. So, so stupid. Samsung washing machine. There is a hose to drain the water if you need to open the filter. Good idea right? Wrong, as the hose is 2 inches long so you can't actually direct the water into a basin or whatever, it's just a different way of flooding the floor. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

Wow I am full of rage Grin

Urm.. mine looks 2 inches long but a gentle tug and you get at least 6inches work with.

Just push it back when you’re done Grin

NoseOfJericho · 10/03/2021 20:09

Plastic bottles of laundry stuff that are so thin they squish when you pick them up after of course removing the lid to pour the liquid into the machine, therefore squirting the detergent/conditioner all over the worktop or machine drawer, resulting in a lot of waste and liquid in the wrong part of the drawer.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 10/03/2021 20:09

My peeve is Colgate Sensitive toothpaste tubes. They used to have it so you had to pierce it open with the back of the lid but changed it about a year ago to having a foil covered plastic tab a bit like on a milk bottle to peel off. Its tiny, the little leaf to pull it from is the size of the white on your baby fingernail and its impossible to open. It takes me longer to open than to brush my teeth!
Also get annoyed with deodorant sticks. I buy Mitchum but it was the same with others, you can only wind them up so far till you start scratching your underarms with the plastic containing the deodorant but there is still plenty left in there. Surely there must be a better way to package this. You end up wasting 1/5 every time.

sotiredofthislonelylife · 10/03/2021 20:11

I have these measuring spoons - the largest shown is 5mls, and easily fits in spice jars.

APPARENTLY the average car park space is 2 inches narrower than the average car Sad

Definitely one of the worst websites around.
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/03/2021 20:13

I know a lot of new-build houses with garages the owners can't get their cars into because the garage isn't tall enough.

What? I've never parked in a space narrower than my car. My car isn't especially small. Is this just a dodgy use of the word 'average', like 'The average dog has less than 4 legs'?
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 10/03/2021 20:14

@PuppyMonkey

I May be the only one on the thread who occasionally has microwave meals Wink but whenever it says “peel film back and stir” halfway through cooking or “peel film back and serve”. I mean, there is nobody in the world who can actually peel that film back is there? The film is literally NOT peeling anywhere without first being cut with a sodding knife.
I do🙋🏻‍♀️ Tesco’s are the only ones that peel of easily, Sainsbury’s are the pits, they come of in shreads it’s infuriating.
NoseOfJericho · 10/03/2021 20:15

Amazon search pages in Google.
You find a link to exactly what you want to buy and click on it. You are taken to Amazon and forced to accept cookies only to find that every time, without fail, the item you wanted to find is no longer showing and you have to enter the search into Amazon and start all over again.

As a result I don't bother looking on Amazon when the right item shows in search, I buy somewhere else.

I was reminded of this when I clicked on the link to the garlic press in this thread as I have been meaning to get one.

thenightsky · 10/03/2021 20:15

The fact that every washing basket I've ever owned does not fit under the washing machine door. It is too high by just a few centimetres

I was cursing the bloody basket only 10 mins before reading this thread. Grin

exiledfromcornwall · 10/03/2021 20:16

A very timely thread, as I have just been wrestling again with my pepper mill. How do you get the peppercorns into the ludicrously small space with the metal thing poking through it without them going all over the kitchen floor?

flappityflippers1 · 10/03/2021 20:16

Triangle kettles 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Oh the rage!!!! Cant fill it up properly with water, steam escapes out the lid and from the spout when making a drink and burns your hand.

I hate them so badly, I actually used them as a case study on poor design in my product design degree 🙈🙈🙈

Bluewavescrashing · 10/03/2021 20:17

Child lock on calpol etc
Can I get it open? Can I fuck. I'm nearly 40.

thebabewiththepower · 10/03/2021 20:19

Little cover under milk bottles, never comes off is one, even if it does I even get irritated by having to take the time to remove it.

Plastic food containers that say “peel here” and then don’t peel or just peel one extra thin layer of plastic off or peel a strip 1mm wide all the way down. I’d prefer they didn’t bother with the pretence that they’re peelable.

Sanitiser bottles where some dries out on the end of the nozzle and then shoots you in the eye when you go for some.

Plastic hard case wrapping that is totally impossible to get into and creates shards of plastic to cut your fingers on.

The Joseph tooth brush holder holds 4 electric toothbrushes. Got mine in dunhelm

HyggeTygge · 10/03/2021 20:20

@SunshineCake omg thank you! I have been meaning to see if there's such a thing as a ham storage box, as i keep open packs in sealable freezer bags but they're a pain to close all the time. Your lakeland link has prompted me to see if there are ham boxes - and there are!!

@WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead

Sainsbury's spices/herbs have teaspoonable openings. I literally do my weekly shopping there because of this Grin
Another wonderful thing about Sainsbury's spice jars - they also have a label on the lid and stand upright inside an ordinary kitchen drawer Smile
trindi · 10/03/2021 20:23

Christmas tree boxes.

Does anyones tree actually fit back in them?

Mine now has 5 years worth of heavy duty packing tape wrapped around the box and then cut through each year. It's the tattiest thing I've ever seen 😂

Why can't we have a bigger box for post-spruced trees? For a couple of years I tried my best to despruce but that doesn't even help so now I just wrap the thing around the box like a too-small-fajita.

@PeppermintTea2021 ooooh God the GP message. I'm a hospital doctor and frequently have to call various practices to discuss patients with a GPs and there is no way for us to bypass that. Makes me murderous.
