Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

The grip release for the re-chargeable unit on Black and Decker drills - you need to squeeze the opposing sides at the same time to do this, and it's designed for man's hands. I don't have small hands and still struggle with this.

Childproof washing pods containers. I can't open them

I took my garden pruning shears to the bloody bastard box, then tipped all the little pods into a tupperware box.

MintyMabel · 10/03/2021 19:22

“Tear here to open” on biscuits. Never works. You always have to use a knife to open and take the risk you cut mid custard cream instead of between two of them.

Black Magic chocolates. The list of what each one is, printed on the bottom of the box. So you have to lift the whole box up, keeping it level, to see what you want.

Terry’s chocolate orange pouches tear to open strip, it leaves the pack completely sealed and impossible to pull open.

This guy explains packaging best

I don’t get why they don’t just put sprinklers in them all!

Because if you are using vinegar for cleaning, it takes ages to sprinkle it out.

@pepeleputois

The word DOG should be in much larger prints on shampoo bottles Grin
😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣🤣
ChippyChickenChips · 10/03/2021 19:23

Body shop shower gel. The hard plastic bottle is too rigid to squeeze. I have to decant it into a more pliable one.

minniemoocher · 10/03/2021 19:23

@UhtredRagnarson

I use vinegar in cooking and it would be annoying with a spray thing, not malt vinegar admittedly

Pinkflipflop85 · 10/03/2021 19:24

Yes to the Smol packaging. Although it did make me laugh that my son (5 at the time) picked the box up from the front door and tore the box open with ease....sending green pods flying everywhere!

Yet I can never get into the bloody box

everythingthelighttouches · 10/03/2021 19:24

Car parks or parking meters where you have to pay by credit card.

Jesus, by the time I’ve gone through the whole bloody process I could have gone and earned the money, come back and paid in cash!!!

minniemoocher · 10/03/2021 19:26

Tresseme shampoo and conditioner in large bottles, they depress out of shape and it's hard to get the last 15% or so out

PeppermintTea2021 · 10/03/2021 19:28

Oh! And GP Practice where you have to listen to a four minute PONDEROUSLY slowly narrated informational message on COVID, numbers to call, reasons NOT to go to surgery if you have a cough etc before being able to get through to the desk to get an appointment for ANYTHING else. At 8am when the lines open it's just frustratingly hobbling to get through and by the time you are through the people queuing up on the door have bagged all the day appointments.

pudseypie · 10/03/2021 19:29

Metanium yellow nappy cream with a screw lid! How am I supposed to put the lid on quickly enough before the toddler grabs it and starts squeezing the contents out, or gets up before I can put his nappy on and runs around smearing his yellow stained bottom everywhere? Flip cap please, come on makers of metanium!!

LAgeDeRaisin · 10/03/2021 19:29

The base of the bowl for my KitchenAid.

It's not a continuous piece of metal so when you wash it up it fills with washing up water and sloshes around in there. You can get some out if you invert it and shake it over the sink, but I'm basically resigned to vile base swampwater because you just can't get it all out.

Pinkflipflop85 · 10/03/2021 19:29

Also.... Fray Bentos pies.

minniemoocher · 10/03/2021 19:30

@toria658

I have the iPhone 12 mini - slightly bigger than my se but a big improvement on anything else on the market.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/03/2021 19:30

the mains charger for my laptop that was sold as fitting my make and model of laptop. Part of it broke of inside the laptop, costing £107 to repair.
So much for saving £10 by not buying the HP branded one.

MintyMabel · 10/03/2021 19:31

Tresseme shampoo and conditioner in large bottles, they depress out of shape and it's hard to get the last 15% or so out

And the lids don’t twist off either.

The word DOG should be in much larger prints on shampoo bottles

Shampoo and conditioner bottles that look identical except for the word “shampoo” or “conditioner” in tiny writing. Can’t see that without my glasses.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 10/03/2021 19:34

Why would you ever need to reseal chocolate????

AirBubbleMe · 10/03/2021 19:34
A lot of things like this are due to the world being designed by and for men - the dimensions of things like smart phones are based on the size of the "average male" hand; supermarket shelves positioned based on "average male" height, etc.

Read "Invisible Women" By Caroline Criado Perez, it will blow your mind!

invisiblewomenbook.co.uk/
Came on to say the same. We're looking at a sexist world. More women in STEM please.

Also, a lot of these can be avoided by buying non-packaged stuff.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/03/2021 19:36

Childproof washing pods containers. I can't open them
just by the cheap washing tablets from Aldi - they're brilliant, and although packed in twos, I have a really large washing machine, and one is always enough.

Adiscoveryofbitches · 10/03/2021 19:37

Another one here for a black water tank on my iron, you have to hold it up to a light to be able to see the water level, it’s bloody heavy and you get a soaking, such a pain in the arse.

Black cables on everything, kettles, toasters, coffee machines, they really look shit against my light worktops.

SunshineCake · 10/03/2021 19:38

@mommybunny

Re:spices - ones I use regularly are often cheaper in the bulk “ethnic” section of my local Sainsbury’s so I buy them there and decant into washed out jam jars.

I hate bacon packaging. I make bacon once-twice per week and never use up a whole pack in one go, but the packs don’t reseal and the bacon dries out and sticks together between uses.

you need this
OliveHenry · 10/03/2021 19:42

@HyggeTygge

Yes, apparently you can use on chapped lips too. Or getting rid of froth on beer/pop. Every day is a school day!

MintyMabel am in tears of laughter at those packaging guys. Grin

Cam77 · 10/03/2021 19:49

iPhones inability to reliably connect to a PC and vice versa. I know they both do it on purpose but it still makes me angry.
Also:
MacBooks terrible photo ecosystem. I want normal folders dammit!
Also:
iTunes. What the fuck were they thinking.

Dancingdolphins · 10/03/2021 19:49

@Dilbertian

My Kenwood stick blender. This is the lid of the mini food-processor attachment. It comes into direct contact with food. It gets splashed with food. If you open up the goblet to add ingredients, bits often get stuck inside the socket for the blade. Fair enough, so you wash it.

Only it's not washable. Not even by hand. This part of the food-processor, with all its little crevices and food-traps, cannot be immersed in water. Arggggggggggh

I have that one. Didn't know the lid couldn't be in water. Mine has been, how would you clean it otherwise Confused
