To think two fruit snacks a day will rot primary school teeth

Infant school insisting that children have 2 fruit snacks a day and it must be fruit. Can also be raw veg but unfortunately my children don't like raw veg without a dip. I might send it in with a dip.

You can send them RAISINS but not a piece of cheese. How can this be healthy for their teeth? Every time I tell my dentist he visibly shudders.

Do other primaries allow non fruit snacks?

My DC have always had at least two pieces a day, sometimes more. None have ever had a cavity. They don’t drink fizzy drinks and have limited sweets/chocolate. I think dentists shudder more when they see kids with multiple cavities definitely not from fruit, from sweets and not brushing properly...

@Bluebellberry

Dc school just started insisting on x2 fruit snacks only-but why only fruit or veg? Dc wanted to take in a cereal bar as one of the snacks, (that had sunflower seeds, oats etc ) but this wasn’t allowed as it must be fruit. Not sure why it cant just be a free choice of something healthy, eating just fruit isn’t always that filling imo.
Because if you allow "cereal bars", then I can send my offspring in with a rice crispy square bar or a frosties bar etc

May as well allow them to take in mars bars.

My dd was allergic to dairy and egg until she was 7 so her snacking options were quite limited. When she was about 5 I asked the dentist if her teeth would suffer because she ate so much fruit that it couldn’t be good for them and she didn’t shudder, she actually smiled sheepishly and said its really not fruit that causes the dental problems that she sees in children and I shouldn’t be worried as long as the rest of her diet was healthy. She is 11 now, still eats more than 2 pieces of fruit every day and never had any dental issues.

Kimye4eva · 10/03/2021 12:31

My dentist specifically told me fruit was fine. It’s juice you need to worry about.

@fruitbat2021

I really love my dentist. He can be a bit serious and did tell me off for snacking too much as he said adults don't need to snack.

The fruit should be with the meals. All treats should be with the meals. It's not about the quantity of sugar it's about the frequency of attacks on your teeth.

I just want to send in a bit cheddar.

No, no, no to the HOMMOUS!! It contains tahini (sesame paste), one of the top allergens, really dangerous - did you read the awful story of the girl who died after eating an unlabelled Pret baguette?

CHEESE too - there will be dairy allergic kids.

Lunchtimes they sit and eat but kids running all over school slopping hommous and dropping cheese is unsafe.

Please just pop an apple and a satsuma in their bags.

@GreenSlide

Why don't I have one of these incredible vibrating dentists Confused
You don't go to the right websites
VeganVeal · 10/03/2021 12:34

Two pieces of fruit? Are they mad? When I was at primary school in the 70's we had much healthier snacks.
1 can of coke
2 chocolate bars, one of which either had to be toffee or peanut based.

MouthAche · 10/03/2021 12:35

Your dentist ‘shudders’ because you give your child a apple and a banana a day? 😂😂

PopsicleHustler · 10/03/2021 12:35

The dentist shudders.

Quick

Call the police and the FBI

Alternista · 10/03/2021 12:40

Is this when I shudder if someone says “moist”?

PyjamaFan · 10/03/2021 12:43

This can't be real, can it?

If you are being genuine OP you really need to get a grip!

manicinsomniac · 10/03/2021 12:45

Sounds fine to me!

You really wouldn't like the school I'm at. A typical week's snacks at our school is

Monday morning - doughnut
Monday afternoon - watermelon
Tuesday morning - banana
Tuesday afternoon - oat cookie
Wednesday morning - breadstick
Wednesday afternoon - apple
Thursday morning - carrot sticks
Thursday afternoon - piece of cake
Friday morning - orange
Friday afternoon - cucumber
Saturday afternoon - chocolate cookie

The cakes and cookies are all homemade but still Shock

Doesn't seem to hurt them though - they do lots of sport and there are far fewer overweight children than the national average.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 10/03/2021 12:46

@NerrSnerr

With all the juice, sweets and chocolate that children eat I can't imagine the dentist visibly shudders mentioning two fruit snacks a day.
^^ this, as IF!

Can you imagine. Yes Dr Toothykins, they have TWO apples a DAY. I know, shocking, i'm saving for the false gnashers already.

NotJustAnyOldDog · 10/03/2021 12:46

Are you real life?

Also, parents have been SHOUTED at by teachers for bringing in crackers? Do they also frisbee said cracker at the parent’s heads at pick up like a throwing star?!

MisgenderedSwan · 10/03/2021 12:47

At my dcs' old school one child brought in 6 chicken nuggets and ketchup for snack, another brought in 5 of the big Costco cookies. Obesity and poor food choices are a big problem in some areas. Agree with it's easier to say fruit and veg only than spend all day every day arguing the toss about what constitutes 'healthy'. Yes, a lot of parents might already know and send crackers/cheese/hummus/yoghurt etc but there will always be a few who go way over the top.

TheShudderingDentist · 10/03/2021 12:48

@PopsicleHustler

The dentist shudders.

Call the police and the FBI

I’m not a criminal Sad
towers14 · 10/03/2021 12:49

"Visibly shudders" 🤣🤣🤣

Kimye4eva · 10/03/2021 12:49

Has anyone with a dairy allergy really had a reaction because someone dropped a piece of cheese on the floor?

Our school is more than happy with cheese at break time. They have a no nut policy but that’s it.

WhenLifeReturns · 10/03/2021 12:50

My children eat a piece of fruit after breakfast. 2 portions of fruit during lunch & then whatever their school offers. My children DO NOT have rotten teeth! How strange. Hmm

ArabellaScott · 10/03/2021 12:53

Onslaught of food? what are you feeding them? Genghis Khan dipped in hummus?

Grin
Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 10/03/2021 12:54

Every time I tell my dentist he visibly shudders.

You and your dentist sound like complete drama queen's. 2 bits of fruit a day is fine ffs!

NotJustAnyOldDog · 10/03/2021 12:57

Is your dentist your husband?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 10/03/2021 12:57

Or maybe your dentist isn't shuddering, maybe they are sighing because your telling them that story once again.

Dinkydody · 10/03/2021 12:58

They're legumes. Not that it matters, they are healthy and counted as one of your five a day. 😊

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 10/03/2021 13:00

Parents have been shouted at for sending in crackers before
