To think two fruit snacks a day will rot primary school teeth

Infant school insisting that children have 2 fruit snacks a day and it must be fruit. Can also be raw veg but unfortunately my children don't like raw veg without a dip. I might send it in with a dip.

You can send them RAISINS but not a piece of cheese. How can this be healthy for their teeth? Every time I tell my dentist he visibly shudders.

Do other primaries allow non fruit snacks?

I don’t think your dentist is visibly shuddering because of the fruit.

Sparklingbrook · 10/03/2021 09:26

@fruitbat2021

They eat the second fruit snack right before they come out!

I am at the dentist every 6 months - as recommended for children?

I was thinking houmous for the dip as chickpeas are a vegetable.

If you try and send in yoghurt covered raisins (which I wouldn't) then you get a shirty letter.

Parents have been shouted at for sending in crackers before.

The free school fruit doesn't always make an appearance at our school. So we have to send two snacks.

So you tell your dentist about the raisins twice a year.

I am really not seeing the problem here. Apple/orange. Crackers are not fruit and veg.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/03/2021 09:26

Just saying..... all their baby teeth fall out anyway.

Do they have permanent teeth?

grapewine · 10/03/2021 09:27

You and your shuddering dentist should lighten up.

Maybe go to the gate at breaktime and pass your kids chips through the fence so they don't eat the dangerous fruit.

Or a Happy Meal? With carrot sticks obvs.
BigTallyWacker · 10/03/2021 09:30

I think this is one of those things that you’ll look back on when the children are older and think wtf did I even give this headspace.

Chickpeas are not a vegetable
Mrsjayy · 10/03/2021 09:32

Why are you obsessed with rasins ? A satsuma or a pot of grapes are much better for teeth.

fruitbat2021 · 10/03/2021 09:33

I really love my dentist. He can be a bit serious and did tell me off for snacking too much as he said adults don't need to snack.

The fruit should be with the meals. All treats should be with the meals. It's not about the quantity of sugar it's about the frequency of attacks on your teeth.

I just want to send in a bit cheddar.

Bloody hell the kids I work with come with a packed lunch of chocolate spread sandwiches and crisps.Fruit is fine.

I honestly wish this was the biggest problem I have, as it appears to be yours.

mammmamia · 10/03/2021 09:35

The responses on this thread are predictably hilarious but the OP is right about frequency of attacks on teeth. Teeth can cope with the onslaught of food 3 times a day according to my dentist. Any kind of snacking beyond that increases your risk of tooth decay.

Zenithbear · 10/03/2021 09:36

I'm shuddering at raw veg.
So glad our snacks were Mars bars.
Fun size of course!

mammmamia · 10/03/2021 09:36

But yeah - kids gonna snack. Better they have fruit.

ThrowingAShellstrop · 10/03/2021 09:38

Are you aware it is recommended your children have 5 portions of fruit/vegetables a day but actually it is more like 8 portions?

Chickpeas are a pulse btw not a vegetable.

GoryGilmore · 10/03/2021 09:40

What a load of bollocks. My DC usually eat 3-4 fruit snacks a day (including, shocker, the devils’s candy - RAISINS!) and their teeth are perfect. I’m 36 and I’ve also eaten fruit snacks my entire life and I’ve never had a filling or any decay. No shuddering from our dentist, but I imagine that’s because she can see that we thoroughly brush our teeth/use mouthwash at least a couple of times a day.

Better start putting my Mars Bars in my lasagne. Layer it with crisps instead of pasta. Two birds, one stone and all that, saves my teeth from the horrors of snacking.
BugsAndBeesAndBirdsAndButterfl · 10/03/2021 09:41

Maybe wean them off need a "dip" for the vegetables. When they're all bustling in school with coats on and bag and eating their fruit/veg before coming home last thing they need is someone waving hummus around. Truly.

But a single morning and afternoon snack of fruit truly is fine...

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 10/03/2021 09:42

and it must be fruit. Can also be raw veg

So it doesn't have to be fruit then?

DS1 ate raisins almost daily right up until he was about 13. He still snacks on them a lot at 16. His teeth are fine.

Pulses are vegetables! What else could they possible be?

'Pulses include beans, lentils and peas. They're a cheap, low-fat source of protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals, and count towards your recommended 5 daily portions of fruit and vegetables. A pulse is an edible seed that grows in a pod.'

Hankunamatata · 10/03/2021 09:43

Crikey mine regularly much through 5/6 pieces of fruit a day 🤷‍♀️. Better fruit than other crap

AnaisNun · 10/03/2021 09:44

My kid must eat 4 or 5 pieces of fruit a day most days. He’s like a monkey. I had no idea I was ruining his life. I knew it was ruining my bank balance though- fruit is so bloody expensive these days.

They should probably take him off me.

DIshedUp · 10/03/2021 09:47

Raisins are actually shit for your teeth

But an apple or just a normal price of fruit, providing you are brushing their teeth, is unlikely to do any harm

Honestly every parent whose child has tooth decay will say "maybe its because he eats lots of fruit', as the child sits munching on a pack of jelly babies, sipping a full fat cake looking blankly at a toothbrush

Obviously that's not quite true but people like to put their child's tooth decay down to fruit. In reality its unlikely to be fruit alone and there's normally more going on. Plus if your worried just give them some vegetables
