To think two fruit snacks a day will rot primary school teeth

Infant school insisting that children have 2 fruit snacks a day and it must be fruit. Can also be raw veg but unfortunately my children don't like raw veg without a dip. I might send it in with a dip.

You can send them RAISINS but not a piece of cheese. How can this be healthy for their teeth? Every time I tell my dentist he visibly shudders.

Do other primaries allow non fruit snacks?

Are you shagging the dentist OP?

stayathomer · 10/03/2021 18:03

raisens is known as being horrific for teeth so of course your dentist wouldn't like it but an apple and banana, or a mandarin and a few grapes?

FabulousIAm · 10/03/2021 18:03

@AlCalavicci

Send them in with a toffee apple and chocolate coated raisins
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

Fruit isn't a problem for teeth, fizzy drinks are.

But nothing is a problem in moderation. Two pieces of fruit a day is perfectly fine and indeed to be encouraged.

What's a fruit snack? Is it processed food containing fruit like a yoyobear or do you mean actual fruit?

Roszie · 10/03/2021 18:45

Send them in with a bag of crisps.

It's a vegetable.

toocold54 · 10/03/2021 19:00

My children eat much more than 2 pieces of fruit as a snack a day and have perfect teeth (they are 12,10&5)having the option of a raw vegetable as well it's not at all unreasonable for them to ask this , have you tried your little one with edamame beans ? my children seem to love them or try a variety of different veg cut up and send that along with a piece of fruit, sugar snap peas and baby corn are very sweet raw , youl be surprised what children will eat in child care that they wouldn't at home ...

BackforGood · 10/03/2021 23:40

Thank you OP

I've had rather a difficult day.
This thread has made me laugh tonight - really cheered me up.

I think we may have the same dentist OP.

He also advised me, in his serious voice, not to give fruit snacks between meals especially berries (acidic maybe?) or dried, he said it should be given straight after meals.

I'm not shagging him either

shinynewapple21 · 10/03/2021 23:53

I think you are being a bit precious here .

Sounds like a shit kid’s book. Fruitbat And The Shuddering Dentist.

Fromthebirdsnest · 11/03/2021 00:15

Also my school doesn't allow dairy as snacks as my child is extremely allergic to dairy and gets contact blisters if someone touches him after touching dairy and if if ingested it , he could die ..they make sure hands are washed after lunch and he has to eat separately so it's not at all ridiculous that cheese isn't allowed as a snack it's extremely difficult having a child with anaphylaxis, seasame is a allergen so I would definitely check before sending hummus with veg sticks although if you make your own (takes less than 2 mins ) you can definitely leave out the tahini so maybe that could be an option ... GoodMumBadMum · 11/03/2021 00:25

I think you have a point, OP. I know my DS would prefer a lump of cheese or a boiled egg to raw veg any day of the week. What raw veg do your DC object to? If its celery and raw cauliflower, I totally agree with them! Raw veg my DS likes include: a little pot of sweetcorn, some olive, sliced avocado, pepper slices, carrot sticks, cucumber sticks.

Good luck, hope they come around.

EstellaHanclay · 11/03/2021 00:36

Fuuuuuck. Mine are eating about 4 fruits a day. Maybe i shudder booked them into rehab.

eaglejulesk · 11/03/2021 00:41

It was the teacher. She was very cross and raised her voice

If a teacher did this to me they would soon find I could be crosser and raise my voice higher.

If this school is staffed by teachers who routinely shout at cracker-pushing parents, it’s got far greater problems than the wrath of overexcited dentists.

This. Where on earth do you live OP, it seems to have nutty teachers and ridiculous dentists!

Talk about first world problems.

alexdgr8 · 11/03/2021 00:56

OP i agree with your concerns.
would your children try thin long pointy slices of sweet peppers, they are quite nice, and come in bright colours.
avoid eating green one raw, indigestible.

alexdgr8 · 11/03/2021 00:57

also bananas are much less acidic.

Kanaloa · 11/03/2021 01:43

My kids had chocolate drizzled strawberries today and now I’m wondering if I’m some kind of monster mother. Your dentist would probably have a breakdown if he heard.

I think you are over worrying about this, it’s kind of a non issue. You can send them with veggie sticks if you want, or one piece of low sugar fruit and one piece of veg. Or maybe you could send a little mix, I find carrots and apple go well together.

1forAll74 · 11/03/2021 02:10

I can't believe that schools have so much influence of what a child can. and cant eat these days. Do they go round checking children's lunch boxes, instead of teaching the children.

whatkatydid2013 · 11/03/2021 07:48

I’m not surprised the dentist has mentioned something else would be better. I have always had thin enamel and while fruit isn’t a problem for cavities it can be for acid erosion. Ive always had to be very careful about what I drink. Fizzy drinks and fruit juice are particularly bad for acid erosion but if you have problem teeth even regularly eating acidic fruit causes wear over time. I’ve had to have loads of fillings even though I only have two actual cavities because of wear. I’m not typical by any means but I’m sure some kids have equally rubbish teeth to start with
