To think two fruit snacks a day will rot primary school teeth

fruitbat2021 · 10/03/2021 09:11

Infant school insisting that children have 2 fruit snacks a day and it must be fruit. Can also be raw veg but unfortunately my children don't like raw veg without a dip. I might send it in with a dip.

You can send them RAISINS but not a piece of cheese. How can this be healthy for their teeth? Every time I tell my dentist he visibly shudders.

Do other primaries allow non fruit snacks?

@AlCalavicci

Send them in with a toffee apple and chocolate coated raisins
🤣🤣🤣🤣
MeetMeInMontauk · 10/03/2021 11:38

I think there's a typo in your username, OP; there should be a 'shitcrazy' after the 'bat'. HTH.

anamazingfind · 10/03/2021 11:40

Many children eat sweets during the day. I am sure they are just as bad as fruit acid, and most have perfectly normal teeth

boltfromtheblueblue · 10/03/2021 11:41

Parents have been shouted at for sending in crackers before.

I sincerely doubt this to be true.

It is true! I witnessed it at pick up.

Sure you did. Who did the shouting?

It was the teacher. She was very cross and raised her voice.

I send my 5yo with veg and a dip. Sistema lunchbox from Lidl it came with a waterbottle and a little tub for dips. It's a pain when the little tubs don't come home though.

My council estate roots give a little shudder though. Mum where's the houmous always strikes me as such a mc phrase (not sure why though).

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 10/03/2021 11:51

Pre covid DS primary only allowed fruit or cheese for snack. Now, it seems anything goes 🤷‍♀️

INeedNewShoes · 10/03/2021 11:53

I don't understand why kids need two snacks a day. They're only at school 9–3 and they have lunch in that time.

We're just compounding the nation's belief that we need to eat constantly.

Is this the same at all schools?

Bid876 · 10/03/2021 11:54

In theory I dont think it’s a problem having 2 fruit snacks a day. I agree fruit can be bad for the teeth but you can have your DCs brush their teeth when they get gone from school.

I do have a problem with no other snacks especially cheese and crackers. My older DCs always brought snacks into school because neither of them eat fruit AT ALL. My oldest hated it from a baby they are almost 9 now and won’t touch fruit, they have always gagged at it even as babies. They will try veg and will even eat an odd bit of certain veg. The 7yo I can’t even get to try anything with out fits of tears and gagging and I’m certainly not going to put them or me through that everyday.

The oldest would drink smoothies until they were given one (by someone else) with chunks of fruit in at when they were 3 and made the self’s sick from it, and refused from that point on to drink them again. They will now drink one kind of smoothie and will eat yogurts as long as there are no fruit bits in. It took 5 years to get here with the smoothie all because someone else completely disregarded my instructions and knew better than me with my child, but that’s a whole other thread🤬

Before people berate me, it’s nothing to do with pandering to my children. I’ve tried fruit and veg and they would gag and make themselves sick from almost as soon as they started solids.

My 3rd child is the polar opposite, they love all fruit and veg, even stuff they are allergic to, that’s our biggest problem, they will eat anything but have food allergies and at 3 they don’t full understand why they can’t eat everything.

OP I’d send them in with what you feel comfortable with and just ignore any shitty letters. If they say anything to your children tell them not to speak to your children about food you have chosen to send in, take it up with you. I’ve done this before with the school, I’ve told them I make all the decisions not my children if the school has a problem with anything they talk to me not my children.

I hear you.

Don’t think I tried hummus till I was about 25! DS would live off it. I also get the MC horrors when he asks for granola! Grin

NellePorter · 10/03/2021 11:54

Just try to send in things that won't get stuck in their teeth and encourage them to drink plenty water.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 10/03/2021 11:58

If this school is staffed by teachers who routinely shout at cracker-pushing parents, it’s got far greater problems than the wrath of overexcited dentists.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 10/03/2021 12:01

This wouldn't concern me. 2 fruits makes up 2 of their 5 a day and vegetables and dip are a good snack for when they get home. Add a couple of cooked vegetables in there with meals and there you go.

Eating too much fruit isn't great for the teeth but 2 pieces is a moderate amount and I'm sure they are drinking water which helps to rinse the acid away.

boltfromtheblueblue · 10/03/2021 12:03

I simply don't believe you that a teacher shouted at parents in front of others over a cracker.
If only for the fact that I know plenty of teachers and they couldn't actually give two fucks what your kids eat.

You're exaggerating for effect.

NerrSnerr · 10/03/2021 12:04

And the dentist visibly shuddered. Lots of overreactions to something not that important.

I didn’t see this bit.

I’d be writing to the HT saying for your reference, I don’t feel comfortable giving my children 2 fruit snacks a day, therefore I will be sending them in with x, y & z, all perfectly acceptable and healthy snacks. If you have a problem please contact me in writing, I do not wish to be berated by a teacher at the school gates as other parents have for sending healthy crackers in to school.

If it’s in writing it’s on record and ofstead will be able to see it. I’d doubt the school will say anything about reasonable snacks being sent in, they will be more concerned that you have put in writing your fear of being berated by a teacher at the school gates.

WeAllHaveWings · 10/03/2021 12:16

Every time I tell my dentist he visibly shudders.

He probably shudders thinking here we go again with the bloody raisins, does this woman have nothing else to talk about 😏

Nanny2many · 10/03/2021 12:18

How can cheese string be any more desirable that fruit? Or even dried fruit?

TitsInAbsentia · 10/03/2021 12:20

@RefuseTheLies

My dd lives on fruit. She's five. Her teeth are fine.
Ah yes...fine for now....watch them all drop like dominoes on birthday number six....
Streats · 10/03/2021 12:21

Just be grateful that the school are doing anything to promote healthy eating. DSD is constantly moaning that little Johnny who she sits next to at lunch had sausage roll and chocolate and his parents dong make him eat fruit so why do we Hmm

As others have said, just send in some veg sticks. They don’t need a snack - they can eat it if hungry enough.

Bluebellberry · 10/03/2021 12:23

Dc school just started insisting on x2 fruit snacks only-but why only fruit or veg?
Dc wanted to take in a cereal bar as one of the snacks, (that had sunflower seeds, oats etc ) but this wasn’t allowed as it must be fruit. Not sure why it cant just be a free choice of something healthy, eating just fruit isn’t always that filling imo.

fruitbat2021 · 10/03/2021 12:25

Check out the singing dentist on Facebook he is quite entertaining although not as lovely as my dentist Blush

They might have had breakfast at 7... And lunch is maybe at 12/12:15. Possibly 5+ hours. So I'd expect them to have a little something mid morning.

No need for the afternoon snack imo.
