To think we need a Royal Commission on the Conduct of the Daily Mail and other media?

I see this H&M interview a little differently.

Do you agree there needs to be a commission investigation into the conduct of the media specifically the Daily Mail etc especially after the DM lost its court case?

Previous articles should be produced by them - including when Piers Morgan called on the Queen the take baby Archie away. Because its clear the DM is doubling down on their bullying and gaslighting and it has to be stopped before someone is hurt.

So Piers Morgan once liked Megan until she stopped talking to him because he's... him,... so he's used the paper to hound her for like 3 years?? Is he out of his mind? Are we? What if this were me? You? Your best friend? A girl or boy he tried to pick up in a bar? Another celebrity??

Where does it stop?

Forget the RF and H&M for a second, who gave the DM the right to destroy lives and our institutions?

I just damn well hate bullies, hated them at school, and I think we should all hate them.

I mean how dare the DM amplify division to tear our country apart like this? And why let them?
Sadly, lots of people buy that rag.

Livelovebehappy · 08/03/2021 19:23

The press are not racist. They are closely regulated and you will not find racist comments made by any of the mainstream media publications. Stupid to suggest otherwise. We need the press to expose issues which are happening, which otherwise would be covered up and hidden.

isitfridayyet1 · 08/03/2021 19:30

@FiveGensOfLove I imagine you're not an ethnic minority therefore you do not understand dog whistle racism or language which has racist undertones or else you would fully get where meagan and Harry are coming from with this. I just find it so sad how many British people like to ignore or gloss over racism as they find it uncomfortable. Would you ever question a gay person if they felt a comment had been homophobic or a Jewish person who felt a comment was anti-Semitic. I doubt it!

Yeh, sure, in the same way that British policing is not institutionally racist.

It is disingenuous to claim that the only manifestation of racism is "racist comments".

VladmirsPoutine · 08/03/2021 19:35

The press are not racist.

I wish I had the privilege or indeed the naïvety to believe this. It must be fun in the clouds.

Moonmelodies · 08/03/2021 19:35

Is this the same Daily Mail that was alone in their unrelenting pursuit and naming of Stephen Lawrence's murderers?

SmokedDuck · 08/03/2021 19:38

Any time you want something like a Royal Commission, you really need to ask, what do you see coming out of it? Anything anyone really doesn't know? Anything actionable? Will it be the kind of thing where there is evidence that people will be able to agree on in a basic way, or will it necessarily be ideologically biased? Will it be possible to get reasonable evidence or for people to give testimony in a way that is honest and straightforward?

If there isn't some kind of hope of those things it's just a political circus and a waste of money.

cinammonbuns · 08/03/2021 19:41

@Moonmelodies what relevance does that have. Do you believe they only have one journalist and that some may be racist and some may not be?

Also I would hope any newspaper would have looked into that. How does that prove them not to be racist.
Just another variation of ‘Well their best friends neighbours dog is black so they can’t be racist!’

What an unsurprisingly idiotic comment.

Donkeydonut · 08/03/2021 19:41

Or the ones who posted photos of Prince Harry in the Nazi uniform or openly mocking Sikh turbans?

Only certain types of racism are acceptable apparently.

isitfridayyet1 · 08/03/2021 19:42

@Moonmelodies wow congrats you found the one positive thing to out balance about 100 negatives 👏. Typical racist comment

I agree they're not. Sadly any criticism of anyone of colour is branded racist.

You can criticise a person of colour without being racist.

Whysolong7 · 08/03/2021 19:46

100% agree. I’m really happy for papers to print headlines I don’t like or opinions I don’t share - I think it’s healthy. But we do need to acknowledge (post Brexit) how dangerous it is to print things that aren’t true.

Mapletreelane · 08/03/2021 19:48

The Daily Mail tore Kate Middleton and her family to shreds. The articles, in particular belittling her hard working parents for daring to run a business and make money were awful. The Middletons didn't respond though, and the press got bored... then along came Meghan. So the press tore her and Harry apart.

Harry and Megs didn't help themselves. Gazillion dollar hen weekends in New York, lecturing the public on carbon footprint whilst using private jets. They just gave the press more ammunition.

But at the heart of this is money. By writing more and more articles that the general public click on, the more advertising revenue the DM makes. And by coming out with more and more nasty and controversial articles....they make more money. How many articles were in the DM site today. It was just awful to look at.

It's a craving for money at the expense of true journalism. It's disgraceful and shameful and we lap it up.

Ilovelove · 08/03/2021 19:52

The bias in the reporting today has been so despicable. The BBC said ‘MH used their interview for complaining’ - doesn’t the word indicate facile behaviour? Have they no justification for speaking out? Really?

We all know this is a power play and the institution is doubling down to protect its abhorrent snobbishness. They really think their wealth and hereditary privilege places them above usual levels of behaviour.

Anything to protect ‘The Crown’ don’t you know.

  • The illusionary made up arbitrary title - which is better suited to a past time.

When we abolish the monarchy we will be setting an example for equality. It perpetuates a class system and thought system which hinders social mobility.
Hopefully this is the start of the end for the RF.

hansgrueber · 08/03/2021 19:54

@bestthingsinceslicedbread

And again people saying it isn't racism. Catch yourself on. This country has serious issues with racism and people seem to want to fall over themselves to deny it
It's 'racism' if you say it is then? Who made you judge and jury? Maybe there needs to be a Commission regarding TV channels allowing utterly unsubstantiated comments to be made against those not in a position to respond?
FiveGensOfLove · 08/03/2021 19:58

@isitfridayyet1 I’m sure you would like to imagine I’m not an ethnic minority but my Dad is half-Ugandan. Funnily enough, I don’t always believe my ethnicity is relevant to my opinions.

LegAndSparkle · 08/03/2021 20:03

Maybe there needs to be a Commission regarding TV channels allowing utterly unsubstantiated comments to be made against those not in a position to respond?

Exactly. Both Oprah and the Daily Mail are terrible.

I think all royals should have a 45 minute interview with Emily Maitliss every 5 years. A proper roasting. She'd have done her research and ask for specifics. They're all bullshitting.

emilyfrost · 08/03/2021 20:07

YABU. Freedom of the press is so important. If you choose to put yourself in the limelight you have to deal with all aspects of it.

There have been no racist articles about Meghan, simply many on her appalling behaviour.

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 08/03/2021 20:08

I think YABU. Press regulation should be entirely independent. I am no fan of M&H and I really dislike their calls for censoring of negative coverage, it is a very slippery slope and potentially dangerous president.

lovelychops · 08/03/2021 20:08

How Piers Morgan can hold his head up in public after the phone hacking scandal let alone have a daytime news programme just shows what is wrong with the UK tabloid media.

Whether you like Harry and Meghan or not, you're a liar if you claim to not see the way she has been vilified by the DM and other scummy press outlets. For those saying its not racially motivated, really?????? The way she has be treated, over every single thing she has done is shameful.

The British press have got away with too much for too long. They are too powerful. They hold too much sway with certain factions of the 'great' British public. Look at the misogyny, then they maintain they uphold family values. The way anything or anyone slightly different is hounded is disgusting.
How can people still read these?

lovelychops · 08/03/2021 20:11

Look at the amount of coloum inches devoted to this couple, and compare it to Andrew and his alleged goings on... its so fucked up what we seem to care about more

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 08/03/2021 20:11

@LegAndSparkle I like that idea, I am a big fan of EM. Wish Laura K and Naga would take a similar approach. EM deals with the issues at hand without revealing her personal feelings, she's amazing

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 08/03/2021 20:14

@Mapletreelane and it started when Kate was in her late teens with no media experience. MM is not an ingenue. She can't be a strong independent mature woman of the world and a naive lamb to the slaughter at the same time.

LegAndSparkle · 08/03/2021 20:19

Anyone hear that academic in "interdisciplinary studies" at Leeds Beckett University on the Today programme? She sounded like an academic in "interdisciplinary studies" at Leeds Beckett University.

9k per year well spent to get taught academic rigour by her!

Fuckingcrustybread · 08/03/2021 20:19

@Moonmelodies

Is this the same Daily Mail that was alone in their unrelenting pursuit and naming of Stephen Lawrence's murderers?
The Daily Mail that named all five suspects in this murder. The Daily Mail that printed photographs of all 5 men with the headline Murderers. The Daily Mail that was praised by the Judge in the subsequent trial and the same Daily Mail that was thanked by Stephen Lawrence's mother Doreen.
