Universal Basic Income means there is no point working hard

A conversation with my boyfriend this morning.

He's currently unemployed. He seems slightly reluctant to look for work and this was one of the reasons he gave. He said he'll earn the same as everyone else anyway when this comes in, and that everyone will earn the same, be it a doctor or a shop assistant, and we're living in modern slavery. Or we will be soon, as that's the way the world is going.

Could anyone enlighten me as to what he is talking about?!

That would make us communist which I didn’t think we were, he is getting confused I think.

MiaowMiaow99 · 07/03/2021 20:19

No nice guy chooses to remain unemployed and therefore able to make minimum contributions to the upkeep of his children.

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/03/2021 20:20

So many red flags for LTB...

He is an idiot. That isn't how a UBI works.

UBI is a really good idea but I don't think its coming to the UK any time soon as we have a society where the majority would cut off their nose rather than risk someone ELSE getting something for nothing.

I think it'd be brilliant, it would force employers to make employment VERY attractive, save money on the cost of trying to force into work those who don't want to, or can't (which is a hidden cost no one really talks about, we have great figures for shoving folk into work, we don't keep any for those who immediately drop back out because they were never actually capable/interested/able of doing the job/any job)...

Back to the point, your partner is an idiot with some very unpleasant ideas within his mixed up incoherent thoughts. You can definitely do better!

Labobo · 07/03/2021 20:21

Yes he's a conspiracy theorist, and yes he's talking about the 'great reset'. He's pro trump and anti mask.

Why are you with him?

MadinMarch · 07/03/2021 20:24

Yes he's a conspiracy theorist, and yes he's talking about the 'great reset'. He's pro trump and anti mask.

He treats me well though and I usually just switch off at his rants. I was a bit lost at this comment today though and his reluctance to look for work does concern me if we're going to have a future together.

I'm not funding him and we don't live together.*

Honestly, I'm sure you can do beter than this for a boyfriend. If you don't share the same beliefs and values, just move on. He's always going to be a lazy arsed person with ridiculous views. He's really not worth wasting your time on.
Go find someone that you share common aims and views with. Or just be without a relationship for a while, as really that will be a much better option.

MrsKeats · 07/03/2021 20:28

He's a pro-Trump, anti vax conspiracy theorist?
Was he the only man left where you live op?
Yuck.

How can you date someone so fucking stupid?
Jesus, I look forward to your post on a few years time “my husbands RACIST and I had no idea - honestly!”

sst1234 · 07/03/2021 20:48

OP, like others said, with an attitude like that, he’s not supporting his child, financially or as a role model. Honestly, don’t get in any deeper. Life happens, before you know it, some reason will crop up that means it’s harder and harder to leave him. Get out while before the spiral really begins.

Whoopsmahoot · 07/03/2021 21:00

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 07/03/2021 21:18

Haven’t RTFT but your boyfriend is describing communism not UBI Grin

UBI as a concept, in which everyone gets a universal non-means tested income, is gaining more traction, partly because increasing numbers of jobs are being permanently removed through automation. At some point we will just not have enough jobs for people, and we will need a plan for that. UBI could enable people to go part time, or have time for volunteering or caring responsibilities, or people could continue to work full time as have extra money to invest in the economy.

Its not happening any time soon though so he should be getting his arse in gear looking for work!

Reinventinganna · 07/03/2021 21:27

Don’t have children with this loser.

pourqouimoi · 07/03/2021 21:34

China is only nominally communist btw

peak2021 · 07/03/2021 21:40

Does the OPs boyfriend not know there is a government of the Conservative Party in power until 2024 at the earliest?

More chance of a singles champion at Wimbledon in the next ten years who is British and does not have Murray as their surname, then UBI.

Instamaticgreenery · 07/03/2021 21:48

It's a LDR 🤣

Seriously, I really appreciate all the replies, thank you for helping me understand. A lot of the stuff that he comes out with I know that I don't agree with, but this comment, and some others, I just didn't get.

For example, he's pro brexit, I was and am very against brexit. We agree to disagree, it's not really a point worth arguing now, and I'd rather keep political arguments out of my relationships. I think he would too.

He hasn't been out of work for very long, a few months and I know he's starting to struggle financially, obviously, so hopefully he'll start earning soon and realise that's a better way to live.

I can see why, you both have very little understanding of it.

Best just boot him to the kerb, lockdown is ending soon there will be a lot of single people lookin to hook up.

BeetieBourke · 07/03/2021 21:58

I have no idea what your future plans are with this dude, and I recognise that marriage and kids is neither Nirvana nor the linear conclusion to every relationship.

BUT, I am here to say that if you live our life along side someone, pay tax, need housing, claim a pension, get sick, look after older relatives etc (ie LIVE) your relationship and politics intertwine.

I agree that I have little understanding of it.

But, everywhere you look, mainstream media, social media, alternative media, everyone has different opinions and points of view. So I could read one thing somewhere, then a completely different point of view somewhere else.

How does anyone know what is real, and what to believe? I may be going off topic a little bit here, but honestly it scrambles my mind.

OP posts:
HugeAckmansWife · 07/03/2021 22:47

different opinions and points of view are fine. Alternative facts, as popularised by Trump are not. Please please get shot of this twat and spend the time reading two or three mainstream media sources every week eg Times, Guardian, Telegraph or Independent. . Don't get any "facts" from social media. Don't fall for the "everyone's opinion is valid" argument. Its not. Betty on FB's view on vaccinations, the R rate and the efficacy of masks is not just as valid as Chris Whitty, Prof Van Tam or the other leading scientists whose views are easy to access at the moment.

And if he is not working, he ios not supporting his kids and is not therefore a "great dad", unless he is the RP and homeschooling them so his ex can work.

Pippin2028 · 07/03/2021 23:03

They trialed UBI in Finland a few years back and it didn't work that well if I remember correctly.
Right now especially with lockdown, people really do believe everything that is written on Social Media as fact.
UBI could potentially be great in some areas but ultimately so many people are lacking financial skills (not always the persons fault but we aren't taught properly about it and if you have family who are bad at money management or no one to advise you, it can be messy) so UBI won't automatically cure all issues related to poverty.
There is always a price and cost to almost everything in life!

Justanotherlurker · 07/03/2021 23:16

How does anyone know what is real, and what to believe? I may be going off topic a little bit here, but honestly it scrambles my mind.

You have to either step back or seriously read around the subject, despite of how much shit trump spouted, some of his poins did come from a factual basis, you only have to look at the rebranding of 'kids in cages' as one example as to how main stream media can sway things and the inevetible twitter outrage mob.

Nobosy can tell you what to believe, it is for you to resarch, not ask on an internet forum for answers what you want, if you want to be able to really deabte the issues you need to understand them yourself rather than parrot some second hand twitter hot take you get from forums such as this.

Regardless of this you still need to kick him to the kerb.
