To be fed up of vaccination envy

TheLoneRager · 06/03/2021 11:53

I'm so fed up of people complaining about who is getting a vaccination before them. Often they cite someone who has been deemed vulnerable but in the eyes of the complainer whatever the medical condition it is isn't very serious in their opinion (obviously also in total ignorance of any other health issues the person may have).

Seriously this isn't the last lifeboat off the Titanic, the last helicopter out of Saigon. More boats and helicopters are on their way all the time. Just wait your turn and be grateful we have an NHS which has stepped up to the challenge and is leading the world in managing a massive logistical challenge.

It was always going to be necessary to use broad bandings of priority.

We are so lucky to have an expectation of getting vaccinated in the near future whatever your age or other circumstances.

I've just had it with hearing whiners complaining "it's not fair".

Wow. Have you ever seen a case of diphtheria? Or polio? Or tetanus? Or smallpox? Why do you think that is @Newfor2021

Not sure if Newfor2021 is joking.

MarinPrime · 06/03/2021 11:59

I haven't noticed this at all in RL. People seem to be genuinely pleased when they hear about others getting a jab.
Of course they may then go on mumsnet or Facebook and whine that it's not fair but who cares?

Kitkat151 · 06/03/2021 12:03

@Newfor2021

What’s even more ridiculous is that people even want this so called Vaccine!!! Hmm
Hope you like holidaying in the uk @Newfor2021 .....because you won’t be going abroad again without the vaccine
AnnieLobeseder · 06/03/2021 12:03

For every person who gets vaccinated the risk drops for the rest of us. So I'm very pleased to hear about each and every person because it's good news for me too.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/03/2021 12:04

YANBU. The more people getting vaccinated the better.

Curiosity101 · 06/03/2021 12:05

I've just had it with hearing whiners complaining "it's not fair".

I've not heard this from anyone either. But there's always going to be people complaining about something.

I feel incredibly grateful to be in the UK right now, there are a lot of low-income countries which will be relying on other countries/organisations to source their vaccines with no choice in the matter.

Magnificentmug12 · 06/03/2021 12:05

Well it’s annoying when you need it more than joe bloggs due to a vulnerability but still haven’t been called for one.

My friend who is 37 and no conditions got called for one and I’m still waiting. Rang then to ask what was going on and they booked me in (for the day after his£ but if I didn’t call I would have been left longer!

Not annoyed his getting it first but annoyed the system isn’t doing its job properly

SisterAgatha · 06/03/2021 12:07

I have noticed this and I live in an area where a lot of healthy people have been done. Most of my friends have and they are all healthy as far as the category’s of priority go. They’d be considered general public, a lot of them still in their 20’s. At the same time in the same area, I know of category 4 elderly people who have not been invited. My friend who is desperately ill and in cat 4 has not been done but her healthy husband has.

So of course there will be envy, but it’s not the person being vaccinated’s fault. It’s just how it is, and it’s been a great roll out on the whole. Everyone will be feeling what they feel at the moment and all of it is valid.

XenoBitch · 06/03/2021 12:08

YANBU
I see it on MN and FB... people posting asking why xyz person got it before them. Some areas are getting through the groups faster, and not everyone wants to disclose why they were in a particular group. So all this moaning about someone in their 20s getting it before their mum does get boring.
Everyone's turn will come, if they want it.

Shelovesamystery · 06/03/2021 12:10

YANBU this drives me mad. We are so lucky to even have vaccines in this short space of time, let alone to live in a country with one of the fastest vaccine roll outs in the world (or is it the fastest? I haven't checked recently).

Every vaccine given is one step closer to normality for us all, no matter who gets it. People need to stop whinging and be grateful for the incredibly privileged position we are in. Just wait your turn ffs!

AnnieLobeseder · 06/03/2021 12:10

Well, everyone should be holidaying in the UK anyway because the environment just can't support ongoing high levels of air travel. But that's not why we're on this thread...

@Newfor2021 it's called a vaccine because it is one. I'd like to ask you what you think it is instead but I'm a bit afraid of what you might say. Is it microchips, nanobots or mass sterilisation? Hmm

EnglishGirlApproximately · 06/03/2021 12:10

I'm pleased the roll out is going well but I understand people's frustrations too, as it seems to be largely a lottery if you get it or not in some cases. I'm asthmatic with an auto immune condition and not in group 6, while asthmatic colleagues in other areas were invited weeks ago. Another colleague is 15 years younger than me with no underlying conditions and has hers today as her GP has a surplus, while in my neighbouring county we have a shortage and have been told it'll be 10 days before supply is back to normal.
I'm soon going to be going back to my normal job and mixing with many different people and I don't mind admitting I'm worried.
I'm not jealous of them or annoyed with them but I am frustrated.

TheLoneRager · 06/03/2021 12:11

My friend who is 37 and no conditions got called for one

This is very surprising. I realise there are some variations whether due to postcode/local issues with some areas having smaller numbers of elderly/vulnerable people and so able to get ahead or possibilities such as extra doses being offered at short notice to avoid waste but generally booking is through the NHS website and very strict.

I had this from a colleague. She is 58 without health issues and I am 40 with severe asthma. Apparently she knows more about me than my GP/asthma consultant.

I just ignores her to be honest

The only reason people can be and are anti vaxx is because the rest of us are vaccined and provide protection by that. I wonder how many anti vaxxers would be here if everyone stopped vaccinating and all that diseases would come back in numbers they were here before🤨 You are welcome.
SisterAgatha · 06/03/2021 12:23

My friend who is 37 and no conditions got called for one

This is entirely the experience I have also had though. My sister in law is 39 and has had it. My bestfriend had hers in January before most carehome residents in some areas, she is 35.

Again though, none of this is personally their fault. And of course people will be envious. It’s just how it goes. I am cat 6 and had mine so I don’t really care but I can imagine if I were desperate to see a loved one in a care home, damned right I’d be sad about it.

Ilovewheelychairs · 06/03/2021 12:26

From what I can see, the issue is that the vaccine rollout isn't equal. My GP's surgery are racing through theirs and are starting Group 7, whereas other surgeries in the area are at the end of Group 5. Meanwhile, my Mum who lives in a different area hasn't been called up for hers yet and she's mid 60s. She lives 100m from the neighbouring county, where she'd have had it done weeks ago! Her area keeps running out of vaccine so is really lagging behind. Also, GPs notes which aren't up to date don't help; a lot of that round here it seems with people having being diagnosed or treated for conditions over lockdown which don't seem to have been put into the system properly or quickly enough to have triggered a letter.

Ultimately, yes, everybody will have one who wants one, but fear is a powerful force. People are genuinely scared for themselves and family members, and seeing other people have something which provides a safety net for them but which you don't have is infuriating and scary when things are going to start opening again soon. Especially if children are going back to school.

I have had the vaccine, because I'm group 6 and because my surgery is keeping up really well. But I totally empathise with the fear people are feeling and the envy they feel when other people are now less at risk than them. I wish there was some sort of programme in place to standardise the rollout across the country, so that EVERYWHERE was at the same stage at the same time. I also think letters from your GP to say 'you are in Group X. Your vaccine is predicted to be between Y and Y date' would really have helped. It would have reassured people they weren't forgotten about and therefore relieved pressure on GPs surgeries phone systems by people querying it. It would have also picked up where people were in the wrong group and they could have corrected that, rather than waiting for people to contact them if they'd missed out.

Donotfeedthebears · 06/03/2021 12:26

I don’t understand why anybody would be jealous of a vaccine, it’s not like you can end lockdown once you have it.

luckylavender · 06/03/2021 12:27

@Newfor2021 - what does 'so called' actually mean?

TheLoneRager · 06/03/2021 12:28

Yes ignoring is the best policy Livpool , well done, but I still find it very annoying. I work in the NHS and several people who should know better were getting heated yesterday at coffee and I just had enough of hearing it.

Plus then they moved on to complaining that GPs would be charging for vaccination certificates or letters or whatever other proof will end up being required. Guess what. GPs already charge for all sorts of letters, and time is money. If half their patients are going to want a letter, which, let's face it, will be because they want to go on holiday abroad, they can add a few £ to the cost of their holiday for getting a certificate to prove they had the FREE vaccination weeks or months before the citizens of the country they want to visit are likely to get theirs.

Asuch as I understand why, I think it would lead to slow down and even bigger resentment tbh.

SisterAgatha · 06/03/2021 12:29

its not like you can end lockdown once you have it.

You can go in a shop or on a bus or to the park which a lot of shielding people have been afraid to do for nearly a year though. For them, the vaccine is life changing even in a lockdown. Even just for their MH.
