To be fed up of vaccination envy

I'm so fed up of people complaining about who is getting a vaccination before them. Often they cite someone who has been deemed vulnerable but in the eyes of the complainer whatever the medical condition it is isn't very serious in their opinion (obviously also in total ignorance of any other health issues the person may have).

Seriously this isn't the last lifeboat off the Titanic, the last helicopter out of Saigon. More boats and helicopters are on their way all the time. Just wait your turn and be grateful we have an NHS which has stepped up to the challenge and is leading the world in managing a massive logistical challenge.

It was always going to be necessary to use broad bandings of priority.

We are so lucky to have an expectation of getting vaccinated in the near future whatever your age or other circumstances.

I've just had it with hearing whiners complaining "it's not fair".

I’m more than happy to wait my turn, even though I’ll be on of the last, but I’m not happy to sit locked up in my house while at least 50% of the people who have had it are out socialising

If you’re one of the last to have it presumably you’re extremely young with minimal risk, so why are you sitting locked in your house?? (I won’t comment on the 50% socialising statement as I’m not aware of the figures).

I’d love to be in my 20s again!

Gooo · 06/03/2021 17:43

Oh and I just want to say I was exposed to covid last month many times by infected family members who I did not distance from and the vaccine really worked! I’m amazed at how well it protected me.

Macaroni46 · 06/03/2021 17:47

@Donotfeedthebears all very well for those who can stay at home. A lot of us can't.
So if I want to pay my bills I have to go out to work, where I mix with 30 children plus various adults .. in one confined space. So yes, I would like the vaccine sooner rather than later!

MrsFezziwig · 06/03/2021 17:47

For those who are moaning about different areas being out of sync, I’ve screenshotted the article on the BBC website about the percentage of over 65s who have been vaccinated - most regions are roughly comparable apart from London which is trailing behind - presumably due to compliance issues.

Obviously this is actual statistics rather than what happened to Sheila’s cousin’s friend down the road.Hmm

@Smileyaxolotl1 exactly this! I feel the same way

Erictheavocado · 06/03/2021 18:18

I don't have vaccine envy - I'm group 6 as is dh. He had his a few weeks ago so I knew mine would be soon and I've now had it. I do however, get angry at friends and colleagues who are booking vaccines via the nhs link. They are claiming to be social care workers and so far, not one of them has been asked for evidence. They are NOT social care workers. Whilst I know that in the scheme of things, the more people who are vaccinated, the better, it angers me that there may be some genuinely CV people not yet vaccinated because some people have lied to get their done sooner.

FakingMemories · 06/03/2021 18:41

I’ve not seen this where I live (not the UK). Here it is being done based on occupation and not age. We are currently at 10.7% of people fully vaccinated (we are not waiting months between vaccines). There are no appointments. It’s based on an honour system. There is a list of occupations currently eligible and if you work in one of those off you go to a vaccine location and get it. It looks like it is working well with no envy.

Titsywoo · 06/03/2021 19:16

Someone in the 30's or 40's who is getting the vaccine either has a medical need, is a carer or similar or is lying to get the jab. Nowhere in the country has got to that group yet. I got mine this week and I am 42 as I do a volunteer job which involves working with life limited people. I only do it for 3 hours a week. Not everyone knows that I do that as it is not my main job so maybe people think I am taking the piss?

StCharlotte · 06/03/2021 19:30

I also don’t get people who post that they sobbed and shook with sheer joy after receiving a vaccination, on social media but I’m glad they are so happy!

Confession: I would have agreed until I got "the text" when I surprised myself by bursting into tears and having a good old weep. Probably a year's worth of pent-up stress and I never knew I had invested so much emotion in the vaccine!

I certainly haven't said anything on Facebook though!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/03/2021 19:34

I might be a heartles bastard, but I did "ok" booked and the only tears were because I am incredibly scared of needles👀 But kudos to the vaccinator. Speed of light

DH goes to work on a military base. Half of the recruits and staff have Covid right now. I’m pregnant and asthmatic. You will get the vaccine soon I imagine, just a bit longer to go!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/03/2021 19:49

I cried when l got mine. So did loads of people l know.

I have to go out to work in a factory, one of the worst workplaces for spreading Covid and I'll get my vaccine when I get it. No point moaning about it.

Macaroni46 · 06/03/2021 20:29

@Waxonwaxoff0 in my opinion you should've been prioritised to have had it by now.

FranklinHot · 06/03/2021 20:33

I wonder if all those who have no time for vaccine envy and are happy to wait as long as it takes to get theirs however long that may be might change their minds if they got Covid in the meantime...?

It does seem to be panning out in a way that means that areas that are more affluent, more white, and with healthier and younger than average populations are ahead of others, so the areas with more people likely to be badly affected by covid are being vaccinated less quickly. That doesn't seem right morally or from the point of view of reducing spread and easing NHS pressures.

I know some 40 and 50 year olds who have no idea why they've been called early which is also peculiar. They've had no prior communication earlier in the pandemic to say that they are at heightened risk of getting Covid or having complications with it.

I also know a lot of people who are suddenly registering as carers. Where my cousin lives you can register online as an unpaid carer and no proof is needed, not sure how you would prove it anyway. They are an unpaid carer providing daily care to their mother but when they went online to register this week to get the jab no proof of what care they provide was needed. They just had to say yes/no to a few questions so anyone could apply really, genuine or not.

Absolutely, people do not have to disclose their medical history of course but I will rightly assume that anyone under 50 who tell me they've had the jab and who doesn't work in health or social care or as an unpaid carer has a group 6 condition, or has been called in error.

If it really doesn't matter who gets it when because ultimately we will all get the jab (and hopefully two doses!), why have we even got priority groups and why did the scientists and medics who decided them bother drawing them up?

There are definitely strange cases and unfairness happening but all in the name of an overall speedy rollout so we shouldn't/can't complain it seems.

FranklinHot · 06/03/2021 20:42

A few previous posters were saying we should stop whinging at all given that we are ahead globally and in a much better position than many other countries as regards the vaccine.

By that 'logic' we should complain about very little else aside form covid so I trust you never complain at all about the health service, our democracy, our welfare benefits system or our free education provision because we are so much more fortunate than so many other countries in those regards....?

It is possible to simultaneously recognise your relative advantage, to want improvements for those in less well off societies and also question the systems in place where you live and want them to be better.

I cried just getting my appointment time 😁

Year of pent up stress and worrying about CEV and CV loved ones I think.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2021 12:09

Yeah mine was crying at the appointment time. When l get the jab it will be like a flood tide!

Pent up frustration, anger, fear, relief and happiness. Weird. Felt like winning the lottery.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2021 12:11

My friend in her 30’s told me recently her mum, stepdad, dad and grandma had all had the vaccine. Apparany when her mum ( last one) got it, my friend burst into tears. At the relief of seeing her family again.

Completely understand that.

Watsername · 07/03/2021 12:58

Whilst I am delighted that people are getting vaccinated so quickly, I am (being completely honest) upset that some GPs are interpreting the rules for group 6 differently to others. I feel it unfair that all asthmatics from the surgery down the road are getting it, whereas my GP are sticking to the rules (as they should) and only calling asthmatics who have been hospitalised or had 3 lots of steroid tablets in 3 consecutive months.

Yes, I know it’s sour grapes, but from tomorrow I will be mixing with 65 people again. Plenty of opportunity to catch COVID before I am called.

MuddyWalks · 07/03/2021 13:00

I'm fed up of people gloating when they have had the vaccine. It's insensitive when lots of people are facing risk at work with no chance of a vaccine for a long time.
I particularly dislike people putting those badges on their social media profiles.

Thomasina79 · 07/03/2021 13:01

Everyone who wants it will get it soon. We are so, so lucky with our vaccination programme.

My grandmother had five siblings who all died in the space of one week from scarlet fever. I think we forget tragedies like this happened all too often in the past. Our ancestors would consider anti-Vaxers mad to refuse the jabs.

Timpani · 07/03/2021 13:04

I want it and yes, I'm envious of those that have had it. Why?
Because my DH is ECV but only had dose 1 two weeks ago. On Monday my children and I go back to our full classrooms. My children have 75 each in their bubbles. I'm secondary and I will see 150 a day in my classroom. I worry one of us will bring it back to him. I have already lost someone very close to Covid. That's why I'm envious of a random 40 year old who is working from home getting it before me.

MuddyWalks · 07/03/2021 13:04

@Donotfeedthebears

I don’t understand why anybody would be jealous of a vaccine, it’s not like you can end lockdown once you have it.
Err because once you have had it you are very unlikely to be seriously ill/die/have long term illness/be hospitalised from COVID.
