What does "posh" mean to you?

What is it about someone that would make you describe them as posh? I would think it's relative and depends on how much you assign class to people but I find it interesting.

I've been called posh a few times and it bugs me because I'm not posh at all. What does posh even mean? Money? Privately educated? Big house? Second home? Plummy accent? High flying career? Having friends in high places? Owning horses? Private jet? Those things just say to me that someone has plenty of money. None of them apply to me and the people I know that do have some of those things aren't posh to me either. Is "posh" the opposite of "common" ( I know how mumsnet hates that term, sorry) or is it something that can't be pinpointed exactly?

Port out, Starboard home.

@FangsForTheMemory

Posh is not giving an arse about the class system, for a start.
Not sure about that.

They care deeply.

‘Doors to manual’?

So introductory conversations are always about establishing membership, not money. This starts with where you live followed by "Oh, so do you know N?" If both parties belong to the same tribe they will quickly establish who they have in common, then relax. It's just like dogs sniffing bottoms. The money only really comes into it because many of the shared pursuits where the tribe run into one another are costly, but if your network is good enough it can mostly be done for free so long as you can ride/shoot, are a good house guest and have something to wear.

Posh for me is old money, there's a very big difference between being posh and being well off.

Darklightspark · 14/03/2021 23:08

Posh to me is a someone who is excessive and almost comedy-like with their plummy accent - it almost sounds put on, the language they use and their generally conservative approach to life. It sounds like they’ve walked out of an Enid Blyton novel.

PigletJohn · 15/03/2021 00:30

I have a funny accent, but am not generally conservative.

If your pinky doesn’t touch your tea cup while having an afternoon brew.

If you wear elbow high white satin gloves

Cesarean Section; because pushing is for the poor.

Port out, starboard home - those that could afford to take the best cabins out to India and return.

BitOfFun · 15/03/2021 00:45

Bit of an urban myth that, apparently.

Not to bring the tone down, there is a couple on Google box UK they're so posh their facial expressions makes me laugh it is like rolling a marble on their tongue when they speak.
Not Mary and Giles they're posh too no doubt, they seem very light hearted.

VictoriaLudorum · 16/03/2021 09:23

Impeccable manners, including table manners.
Clean and tidy appearance.
Always appropriately dressed for the occasion/weather.
Ability to "muck in".

Janegrey333 · 16/03/2021 12:37

Why would anybody who was “posh” appear on, or watch, Gogglebox?

@Janegrey333

Why would anybody who was “posh” appear on, or watch, Gogglebox?
Can you really not think of a reason?
Janegrey333 · 23/03/2021 16:47

No.
