Is DM being unreasonable? Harmless cause?

DH has ringworm confirmed by doctor. It’s in the centre of his chest.
Didn’t think anything of it until my DM said “oh my goodness how has he managed to get that it’s spread by skin to skin contact”.

Myself, DD and DSS do not have it.
DSS is in school (mum is keyworker) and DH sometimes plays football outside.

Is there a harmless explanation of how he’s caught it? I don’t have much knowledge of skin/fungal infections but we’re in lockdown so I suppose DM is suspicious of how he’s managed to catch it.

I feel stressed about it.

Thank you

Do you have a pet?

Evenstar · 05/03/2021 14:30

Do you have pets? It is easy to catch from animals

FireflyRainbow · 05/03/2021 14:31

Stroked a random dog?

FireflyRainbow · 05/03/2021 14:31

Your mum not fond of him I assume OP 😂

SixDegrees · 05/03/2021 14:32

Have you got pets?

WormingAround · 05/03/2021 14:33

We have a cat but he’s been to the vet very recently for an MOT (for want of a better word) and he doesn’t have ringworm

Fungal infections can be spread by spores in the environment landing on a nice damp warm place. Ringworm is not an STI

WormingAround · 05/03/2021 14:33

@FireflyRainbow seems that way!

Shared a towel?

WormingAround · 05/03/2021 14:34

I’ve done some googling and lots of sites put emphasis on “direct skin contact” and “touching an infected area of someone who has ringworm”.
Honestly I’m looking at him differently now and I don’t know if I’m way off the mark or not

Is your mind jumping to cheating? Lots of people get ringworm and to be honest even before lockdown I rarely touched the skin of people outside my household and probably lots of other people are the same; no real need to shake hands in very day life and even when hugging you don’t often have skin to skin contact with other people yet people still get ringworm

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/03/2021 14:40

If it helps its the same thing as athletes foot or 'jock itch'. It just has different names depending in where in the body it is!

starfishmummy · 05/03/2021 14:42

It can also be spread by contact with objects such as towels or something he has touched.

Id be looking at DSS as a source

WormingAround · 05/03/2021 14:42

@user1493413286 yes :( I didn’t even think about it until DM raised her suspicions due to the skin contact issue of how it’s spread. She’s a bit of a drama queen but her comments have thrown me off massively. Her point is that “we’re in lockdown so how has he managed to get it” type thing

WormingAround · 05/03/2021 14:43

@starfishmummy - DSS doesn’t have it though. He is primary school age so I thought the same thing but nope, no sign of it. Could he still be a carrier of it?

Also just realised I had ringworm several years ago on my leg and I can assure you that no one other than myself had touched my leg for a while and I always believed it was from a family I visited while working who I didn’t touch but would have touched door handles etc that they touched

Quartz2208 · 05/03/2021 14:44

Here are the ways:

How Do You Get Ringworm?

Ringworm is highly contagious. You can catch it in any of the following ways:

From another person. Ringworm often spreads by skin-to-skin contact.
From your pets. Rubbing or grooming Sparky? Wash your hands when you’re finished. It’s also very common in cows.
By touching objects. The fungus that causes ringworm can linger on surfaces, clothes, towels, and in combs and brushes.
From soil. If you’re working or standing barefoot in soil that’s infected with the fungus that causes ringworm, you can get it, too.

Its likely whilst playing football outside he either touched a pet or the football touched soil and then hit him in the chest

justcannotwithyou · 05/03/2021 14:47

My friend had it many moons ago and stupid teenager me borrowed her jumper and caught it. Massive pain with two cats in the house, trying to make sure they didn't get it too.

Either way, it doesn't mean he's been shagging someone. I'm pretty outraged at your mum tbh, sounds like she's stirring a bit.

gamerchick · 05/03/2021 14:48

It's ridiculously easy to catch, cheating wouldn't he the first place my mind would go to OP. You might never know but I'd be eyeballing the cat.

Cassilis · 05/03/2021 14:51

I had ringworm on my chest, was single at the time, was deffo not from skin to skin contact.

And I wash my hands religiously so was surprised!

Quartz2208 · 05/03/2021 14:52

or any cat - if you own a cat he could have petted any cat whilst out and about!

Cheating would be the last place I would go to

WormingAround · 05/03/2021 14:55

Thanks all - I was wondering about the football. He plays on one of those outdoor Astro turf pitches but thought maybe the outside mixed with being sweaty could’ve caused it?

Yes massively annoyed at my mum for causing this issue. I haven’t raised anything with DH yet as he’s going to think I’m nuts but I think he will be hurt I think that of him. Just can’t shake the worry of it as I’m quite an anxious person

I currently have ringworm on my chest it’s come from athletes foot, no one else has it no animals. Just me, ignore your mum.

user1471457751 · 05/03/2021 14:56

Your mum sounds unpleasant. Does she have issues with your husband normally?

Ringworm is highly contagious. I feel really sorry for your husband that you are thinking he's cheated when it is so easy to get ringworm for various sources.

Puddingypops · 05/03/2021 14:58

Also let me
Point out that when my immune system gets low ringworm and lathered foot reoccur, the creams clear it all up but if I’m unwell it comes back
