to think Ronan Keating can’t sing? Which other famous singers can’t sing?

When I was a teenager I thought Ronan Keating had a great voice (despite not being my type of music) but I think I probably just fancied him. I’ve just heard one of his songs from around 1999 pop up on a Spotify playlist and he sounds like a goat yelping into a Pringles can.

I know lots of pop stars can’t sing for shite but in my head I had him in a bracket of people who can sing nicely - despite probably not having listened to his music for 20+ years.

Can RK sing?

Which other pop stars who people think are decent singers actually turn out to sound like a farm yard animal with trapped wind.

@Frazzled2207 have you seen Adele live?
I'm wondering if some people are judging based only on recording which anyone can do ..and not the live singers.
I found Adele,Celine, jessie j etc all "wow" in real life as their power and pitch were spot on, whereas so many people can't match that without a little/lot of help from the studio.

Knowivedonewrong · 06/03/2021 11:49

If you think George Michael or Adele can't sing, then you need to clean your earholes out!

GordonsAlive85 · 06/03/2021 11:50

Just watched the clip of Elton posted yesterday, it reminded of the club singer round on shooting stars 🤣

AngeloMysterioso · 06/03/2021 11:56

Oh- and Emeli Sande - that clown song, she always seems unable to sing more than one note or syllable, so in the chorus all I hear is

I’ll be your claa
Behind the glaa
G- heddd n laaa
Cos it’s fu
I would too if I saa
I’ll be your claa
On your favourite chaa
Life’s cir cir
Round cir
And whatever the last line is

And Sam Smith- it’s just whining set to music.

NoMackerelInSwindon · 06/03/2021 12:04

That morose block who had a rose poking out his arse on top of the pops in the 1980's.

Exhausteddog · 06/03/2021 12:11

I will probably get roasted for this
When we watch BGT we always say if you're under 14 or over 65 you get a free pass, regardless of what your "talent" is , and how good it is.
A lot of them (although this includes some more aging popstars whose voices have lost strength) if you heard them on the radio with no explanation, no backstory, sob-story, no idea of their age or who they were you would wonder how on earth they got on!
I remember thinking that nearly all the acts at the Queens diamond jubilee concert in 2012 really struggled to sound great live. Out of the older stars, only really Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey still sounded amazing.

@sashh

David Bowie can’t sing. But oh my gawddd can he put a song over!

To be fair not many dead people can sing.

I like the passion and uniqueness of his voice in Wild is the wind and Heroes.
ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 06/03/2021 12:16

Diana Vickers!! Is she singing in English? So hard to tell.

There’s a good reason Lily Allen songs are my karaoke go-to. Don’t worry Lily, I can’t sing either.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/03/2021 12:19

Seal. I heard him live and he is tone deaf. I like his music when its been edited though.

Againstmachine · 06/03/2021 12:27

James Arthur sounds like the pub drunk singing.

Sam Smith too short tongued for my liking.

Youseethethingis · 06/03/2021 13:20

It’s Britney, bitch..
I was about 8/9 when Baby one more time was released and I couldn’t understand why she recorded her song when she clearly had a bad cold Grin

Squeejit · 06/03/2021 13:21

I love the Stone Roses but my god, Ian Brown...

Frazzled2207 · 06/03/2021 13:43

@BorderlineHappy

Olly Murs is another one,and its so obvious when he sings with better singers.

But i like him and his voice suits his music.
So hes another one the whole package rather than an amazing voice,

Agree about Olly. He just about scrapes a pass as singer but his personality m is what has helped him do so well.

Oh surprised to hear this. What a shame.

@Squeejit

I am also a huge fan, but completely agree Grin I think that’s why I’ve never enjoyed his solo work in the same way - John Squire and his guitar genius is just such a big part of The Stone Roses. Also, if you watch Made of Stone, there’s a scene with them rehearsing ‘Waterfall’ and Reni seems to be doing a lot of backing vocals.
Wendyhause · 06/03/2021 14:12

@Exhausteddog

I could not agree more re the Welsh ones! Tom Jones and Shirley B are in their 80's and still have powerful and amazing voices. Must be something in the leeks.

LadyfromtheBelleEpoque · 06/03/2021 14:46

What about Rita Ora?

Grin Yes finish singing the fucking line woman! Or Yes finish singing the fucking line wo!

But it did inspire a “clowns don’t have channels” rant on MN that was funny.

woodhill · 06/03/2021 15:12

Love Madness but Suggs is a bit monotone

RebeccaCloud9 · 06/03/2021 15:13

I think Jess Glynne has the most hideous voice. It gives me shudders like nails on a blackboard even on her produced songs.

And Katy Perry live is just laughably bad.

isthismylifenow · 06/03/2021 15:48

Can someone explain this to me... . Tom Rosenthal (edith Whiskers) Home, he's singing both the male and female parts. From what I can make out it was recorded long before being used on Tiktok videos. So just why?

My dd loves it. I do ask her to press skip if I'm around.😊

I do quite like the original though.

RightOnTheEdge · 06/03/2021 15:58

@EnglishGirlApproximately that Elton video made me laugh and I really needed that thank you!
It's so bizarre 🤣

LadyEloise · 06/03/2021 16:04

Two more that can't sing but can sure get a song across are :
Van Morrison and Bob Dylan.
Saw Dylan live two years ago. Dreadful.
But love listening to him

PuppyMonkey · 06/03/2021 16:11

I think it's sad about Elton John as if you listen to his performances from the early 1970s, he very much CAN sing - Your Song and the original Candle in the Wind and all that. But he completely lost his tone and his softness in the 1980s and now can only do the painful pub singer style singing. Sad

I never thought any of the Beatles had a particularly good voice. And Amy Winehouse in her not very good fake US accent just sounded silly to me.Confused
