to think Ronan Keating can’t sing? Which other famous singers can’t sing?

When I was a teenager I thought Ronan Keating had a great voice (despite not being my type of music) but I think I probably just fancied him. I’ve just heard one of his songs from around 1999 pop up on a Spotify playlist and he sounds like a goat yelping into a Pringles can.

I know lots of pop stars can’t sing for shite but in my head I had him in a bracket of people who can sing nicely - despite probably not having listened to his music for 20+ years.

Can RK sing?

Which other pop stars who people think are decent singers actually turn out to sound like a farm yard animal with trapped wind.

One word.... Meatloaf

GreenlandTheMovie · 06/03/2021 00:08

Damon Albarn isn't a great singer but he produces a huge variety of good music.

I haven't read more than a handful of replies so I may be alone in saying
KYLIE BLOODY MINOGUE!

Cam2020 · 06/03/2021 00:14

Madonna - though she is a great performer
Mel C has an absolutely hideous voice
Geri Haliwell - how she ever got a contract as a solo artist is beyond me. Even auto tune on that awful Lift Me Up song could not hide how out of tune she was 😂

Elton John singing ‘I’m Dill Danding’ for that outdoor live thing last summer was all kinds of bizzare
I like Elton John but that performance!! Just thinking about it brings on the hysterics.

Strongly disagree about Springsteen but on the fence about those over singers Mariah and Whitney. I think they were good singers once but the music industry's expectation of constant vocal gymnastics messed them up. Maria's voice is screwed from singing in that whistle register so much. Incidentally, Britney's natural voice is much lower than most of her material and her voice is also ruined from being forced to sing in that silly forced baby voice in a higher key.

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 06/03/2021 00:15

Meatloaf certainly can't sing now - he sadly lost his voice through illness and age. Back in the day though he was an absolutely great rock singer - total powerhouse.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 06/03/2021 00:15

Ian Brown. I had the misfortune to see the Stone Roses play Reading Festival, it was a foghorn. I don’t think anyone else is that terrible.

Mind you Cliff Richards voice is weak.

I love Kylie though, love her voice, it sends me to happier times.

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2021 00:23

Has anyone mentioned Chris Martin yet?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/03/2021 00:25

Although they were kept from the number 1 at one point by Ken Dodd of all people. Grin

My problem with people's singing isn't the notes, but their enunciation. I don't want to pick on people, but Adele's Skyfall was not easy to understand.

When you listen to somebody like Julie Andrews, every syllable was crisp and audible.

Caramelwhispers · 06/03/2021 00:25

Dons tin hat & body armour to ask
"What do you all think about Tina Turner?" and runs away.....

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/03/2021 00:27

(I was talking about The Beatles and Ken Dodd there, the thread has moved on a bit!)

FunnyWonder · 06/03/2021 00:39

I remember my sister and I used to impersonate Cilla Black by screeching 'Surprise surpriiiiise, the unexpected hits you between the iiiiiieees .....' (spelling adjusted accordingly!) and laughing our heads off at the sheer awfulness of her voice (and ours). I used to wonder how anyone had ever thought she could sing.

BUT ... 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' is magnificent. It gives me goosebumps, it's so painfully heartfelt.

Can't stand her singing anything else though. It was a running joke in our house to see who could mute the TV first every time she started her warbling.

OliviaPopeRules · 06/03/2021 00:42

@Creamcrackersandricecakes

Sam Smith - although I concede this may be due to them being a self-obsessed nob head. Seems to think they invented the male falsetto, (and doesn't even do it well, very reedy and nasally). Apparently when Boyzone were first formed, the studio technician who first recorded them singing together ended up phoning Louis Walsh in absolute despair and saying, 'you can't have the blonde one as the lead singer, he can't sing' GrinGrinGrin
Ahh Sam Smith is so whinny when he sings. I really can't understand how he is successful at all. Also he is a self obsessed numpty. I like Ronan Keating but find the way he signs on some songs odd. I listen to him on Magic sometimes and they take the puss out of him about his singing and he takes it really well so I think I kind of like him more because of that.

Love her!

@RitaFires I was just trying to make the point that a lot of crap singers can sound good with the right song and great singers can have an off night.

She had a not difficult song to sing at the Queen's jubilee and it was mauled beyond anyone's standard of reasonable. It is depressing, that marketing, networking and dimples can shove so many other truly talented people out of the way. Standards need to improve.

lighteincastlewindow · 06/03/2021 00:54

@JaneJeffer Has anyone mentioned Chris Martin yet? I don't know but yes, what a disappointing singer he is. No range. The charisma of a droopy lettuce leaf. And the shame is they have good music, which he writes? Am I wrong there? But a frontman he isn't. Such a shame.

Yes!! I remember doing this too Grin

You're not wrong. I will listen to the intro thinking this is good and then he starts singing and I think nah! He seems like a lovely man though.

@Beetlebum76

Jessie J - really unpleasant to listen to
I really like her voice. Each to their own!
Fiddlersgreen · 06/03/2021 01:23

Liam Gallagher

Fattydoggy · 06/03/2021 01:24

I always thought Roman couldn’t sing but I strangely really enjoyed his vocals on his crooner session with Gary Barlow.wished Gary would shut up actually lol. I think Paul McCartney has a weak vocal now but he sounded great when he was younger.

In terms of the music that I love, Damon Albarn and Ian brown can’t sing for shit. They are really, really bad. I love their music anyway.

Someone mentioned Liam Gallagher. Liam has had dreadful performances. He is a raw, untrained singer and his vocals have been awful at times especially near the end of his tours and when he is not looking after himself. But he can definitely sing. When he gets it right (like ‘slide away and ‘once’), it sounds so beautiful, it makes me cry.

SelkieQualia · 06/03/2021 01:28

Leonard Cohen, despite being a master poet.

Wonderbrush · 06/03/2021 01:31

I love ronan keating. I’ve seen him live as well.

Don’t like Adele. I don’t think she can sing very well. I don’t like her singing voice but I can’t understand how everyone else likes it.

CrayonInThreeBits · 06/03/2021 01:35

Can't be doing with Adele. Too loud, too strained, and when she's singing live I can't help mentally muttering "flat…sharp…flat…flat…sharp…".

Gemma2019 · 06/03/2021 01:37

Bloody JB Gill from JLS! Used to really like JLS's songs and thought they sounded good as a group but OMG I had no idea how much some of the band were carried by the others.

JB singing the theme tune to Down on the Farm sounding like he is holding his nose underwater is the worst thing on CBeebies.

Teddy1970 · 06/03/2021 01:38

The Spice girls, especially Victoria, it just sounds as if she's talking not singing!
