2 adults 4 dcs here (aged 7 down to toddler) and since covid, our grocery budget has slowly eeked up and we're now spending £130-£150 p/w. We don't drink so no alcohol included, but that figure does include toiletries like shower gel and also cleaning products. The kids take packed lunches to school, and with dh and I both working from home, the groceries include lunch for us too.

I shop at a more expensive supermarket cos they're the only ones that deliver to my house (and they charge a fiver to deliver which ups the cost even more), but I reckon if I dragged my arse to aldi or lidl I could probably knock at least £50 off my budget. I cook lots from scratch, and lots by batch.

Am I being unrealistic to think I could get a good weeks shopping in aldi or lidl for under £100? The only concern I have would be that the fruit, veg and bread from aldi doesn't last as long, and I'd hate to have to do a top up shop as I'd end up spending more.

We switched to Aldi from Sainsbury's delivery and saved about a third on our weekly budget. We honestly couldn't believe it the first time we did a weekly shop in Aldi.
Decent quality just less choice. Which is not necessarily a bad thing.

However, we have noticed that food prices have really gone up in the past couple of years but we can feed our family of 4 including 2 teenagers for around £100 per week.

Mostly we spend more though as the Aldi random aisle is hard to resist. I have been known to add a telescope or orbital sander to the weekly shop just cos it's there... Grin

2 adults £75 to £100 including cleaning products, basic toiletries and cat food
I buy some things at Aldi/Lidl then rest at Tesco/Sainsbury’s with occasional bits from Booths
I am the queen of yellow stickers though and have 2 freezers so we eat very well on that amount
Yesterday I bought 2 legs of lamb for £3 each venison steak packs x 2 for £1.50, king prawns £1.25 thats 7 evening meals (although obviously will not be eaten on the same week)

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 05/03/2021 10:28

Two adults and one cat. About £80 a week, but we eat well and I don’t drink alcohol. I get my shopping delivered but have a delivery pass which saves a lot of money on delivery charges

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 05/03/2021 10:32

Also, if you have Amazon prime, Morrisons will deliver groceries for free if you spend at least £40

Freezeboy · 05/03/2021 10:37

£80-100 a week for 2 adults and 2 kids. We use a supermarket with a delivery package so it’s £6ish a month for free delivery. I would try another supermarket if possible and see if that saves you money.

I would love to go to aldi etc but then I think about the time I loose and stress levels with kids and having it delivers wins every time

I spend about £90-£100 per week in Aldi for family of 6 with two teenage boys. Food costs have def gone up. I keep the cost low by only buying mince/sausages/chicken drumsticks and having a few cheap veggie meals per week. I also get a massive block of cheddar for lunches. We usually spend about £10 for a top up. I find a quality is fine. I should add that we bake most of our own bread at moment so that probably saves £5 or so. I find Tesco is only about £10 more if I buy mostly the value range.

Givemeabreak88 · 05/03/2021 10:42

I spend about the same and I’m a single parent with 4 children. Personally I don’t like Aldi or Lidl so won’t be switching the times I’ve gone in there no way could I do a weekly shop in them and my kids wouldn’t eat most of it

ChelseeDagger · 05/03/2021 14:14

I spend about £120. two adults and five children, one a teen.

tbh I don't just shop in one supetmarket. I do go to Aldi/Lidl/Asda but I also top up for toiletries/cleaning products etc at Home bargains.
I shop at Heron foods for yougurts and any random special offers on treats.

So it breaks down as about £75 in the supetmarket on fresh meat, veg, essentials, another £20 at Heron foods and approx £30 at Home Bargains.

I am lucky enough to live within a mile of all of these shops so the whole trip takes less than an hour and a half but its worth it to keep the monthly bill under £500.

Fundays12 · 05/03/2021 14:18

I spent £89 in Aldi yesterday which was pretty much my main weekly shop. Another £50 in ASDA as my son is gluten free and fussy plus I bought wine. Then another £70 in B&M for monthly toiletries etc. The shop I got in Aldi had more than the Tesco one which would have cost £116. Milk and meat get delivered and cost £90 a month.

My bill has shot through the roof though. I am averaging £140 a week but Aldi brought it down yesterday.

Merryoldgoat · 05/03/2021 14:29

About £150 a week for family of 4. That’s not including cleaning stuff and toiletries.

LucieStar · 05/03/2021 14:30

About £120 a week. 2 adults and 1 teen. Soon to be plus small baby, so will likely increase Confused

Hoppinggreen · 05/03/2021 14:30

£200-250 PW with Ocado during lockdown. 2 adults and 2 teens
It should go down once the dc are back at school

QueenPaw · 05/03/2021 14:33

I swapped from sainsburys to Lidl and have gone from £50pw to £25-30

tiredmum2468 · 05/03/2021 14:49

We are a family of 2 adults, 2 kids and a cat we spend about £100 a week
I like a lot of things Aldi and Lidl do but the quality of the fruit, vegetables and salad isn't great so I buy that from different supermarkets that sell class A stuff as it's much better quality and lasts longer and we don't end up throwing stuff out

FirmlyRooted · 05/03/2021 14:54

About £200 including top up shops, alcohol and mostly organic. Plenty of quick to prepare things due to zero time to cook and usually things like salmon and steak.

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 05/03/2021 14:58

Family of three adults, £250 plus £60 on takeaways.

user1493413286 · 05/03/2021 15:04

Two adults, 3 year old and 1 year old plus two cats and including toiletries and cleaning products (and a bottle of wine each week) £100-120 a week; I go to aldi once a month to bulk buy stuff that is cheaper there although I often then end up buying stuff on their special buys so spend more!

Pinotwoman82 · 05/03/2021 15:08

2 adults and 3 DC over 8, the last year it has dramatically increased from about £110 per week to probably over £200. Hoping things even out a bit when they are back at school.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 05/03/2021 15:10

Am I having deja vu or did you start this same thread yesterday, I'm sure I've read this in the past day?

fairydustandpixies · 05/03/2021 15:14

Me and the dog, £50 a fortnight. Used to be that every 3wks but the prices are rocketing up.

InDubiousBattle · 05/03/2021 15:15

2 adults and 2 dc (5 and 7)here and we spend £120-150 a week. I don't think that what you're spending is that bad for 6 people but you could probably get it under £100 with careful planning and switching to aldi.

VettiyaIruken · 05/03/2021 15:16

It's about £140 at the moment (groceries, household stuff etc). 4 adults and a cat.
It is getting more and more expensive! It's ridiculous.

AryaStarkWolf · 05/03/2021 15:17

around €150 (£130ish) for 3 adults + 1 teenager

CCSS15 · 05/03/2021 15:26

Aldi have started doing click and collect in some stores if you can't face doing a shop

Mypremiumwhat · 05/03/2021 16:28

Nope didn't post this yesterday, glad I'm not the only one stressing about my spend Grin

It seems from the responses that we're actually pretty average then! I was hoping everyone would tell me I'm spending a fortune and that I'd be able to save a packet by eating dried beans and mumsnet chicken for a month Grin

Unfortunately, due to where I live, the only supermarket that delivers to me is the expensive one that I currently use. My nearest Tesco do c+c but it's a bit of a pain in the arse to get to. No Aldis in my city have c+c yet Sad
