2 adults 4 dcs here (aged 7 down to toddler) and since covid, our grocery budget has slowly eeked up and we're now spending £130-£150 p/w. We don't drink so no alcohol included, but that figure does include toiletries like shower gel and also cleaning products. The kids take packed lunches to school, and with dh and I both working from home, the groceries include lunch for us too.

I shop at a more expensive supermarket cos they're the only ones that deliver to my house (and they charge a fiver to deliver which ups the cost even more), but I reckon if I dragged my arse to aldi or lidl I could probably knock at least £50 off my budget. I cook lots from scratch, and lots by batch.

Am I being unrealistic to think I could get a good weeks shopping in aldi or lidl for under £100? The only concern I have would be that the fruit, veg and bread from aldi doesn't last as long, and I'd hate to have to do a top up shop as I'd end up spending more.

2 adults 2dc (1 age 4, 1 age 18m) and a cat. £120 pw mostly at sainsburys.

Expensive in that we like choice, buy relatively pricey things like more expensive meat and eggs, wet cat food & litter.

Cheap in that I cook and bake from scratch so most of the shop is cheap raw ingredients and we dont buy a lot of random extras (snacks, treats, drinks, wine).

LunarSea · 05/03/2021 16:49

Totally varies - if the freezer is full, and work is busy, especially in summer when we have veg from the garden, I might only buy bread and milk. Other weeks I may get an big meat delivery (hence the full freezer) and be spending a lot more overall. Currently still running down the stockpile of non-perishables bought at the end of last year in case of no deal Brexit disruption, so buying very little of that. May build it back up a bit this month in case 1st April causes issues.

Whatdoesitsayaboutyou · 05/03/2021 17:02

Tesco delivery (have a midweek delivery saver). 1 adult, 17,12,12, one has a free from diet. £40-45 a week including all toiletries, cleaning products, laundry etc. I'm a disabled single parent so have to be frugal however we eat well, a good variety, lots of batch cooking.

WaitingForNormality · 05/03/2021 17:04

2 adults, 4yr old and a cat. We always do Tesco delivery and average about £80/week

Stillgoings · 05/03/2021 17:09

about £120 for two adults and two teenagers including wine and toiletries but not cleaning products. I work at a supermarket and get 10% off so that helps. It's definitely gone up.

2 adults, 2 children (6 and 2) I remember when it used to cost around £50 a week but now I can't get it under £70-£80. Shop at asda as I find it the cheapest. I have an aldi 2 minutes away from me but I couldn't do a full shop there, I don't like the quality of some of the stuff like Cereals, bread etc. Like the nappies though.

BabyofMine · 05/03/2021 17:19

£100-120 a week for two adults, one preschooler and a large dog, that includes all toiletries and cleaning products and dog food. I’ve been getting so stressed out because we seem to spend so much and we shop in budget supermarkets. This makes me feel a bit better actually. I still want to cut it down but I used to spend £100 with luxuries, now it’s edging towards £120 and I’ve cut out luxuries and swapped to non branded etc.

Serin · 05/03/2021 17:23

4 adults. 1 cat, one small dog.
About £150 per week.
Soon to rocket though as DS1 is moving home for a couple of months. (Within covid rules, he's a healthcare student starting a new placement).

greeneyedlulu · 05/03/2021 17:26

Swap to Aldi, I was shopping in Asda spending £150 plus a week and now it's about £60 - £80 a week! I was almost embarrassed that I hadn't made the change sooner!

So I didn't imagine it Grin

I thought the dates on my thread had gone wrong

HauntedPencil · 05/03/2021 17:28

I'm spending £130 ish a week - but j can't bear our local Aldi in lockdown it's so busy and everyone gets so arsey and rude. Currently Ocado Or Sainsbury’s

I could easily shave off a third there

HauntedPencil · 05/03/2021 17:30

It's definitely getting worse and worse - everyone is eating more though as we are all here all the time. I will shave some off when lockdown has lifted

Mintjulia · 05/03/2021 17:31

One adult, one 12yo, about £45 a week once DS is back at school.

UmteenthUser · 05/03/2021 17:35

2 adults, about £100 a week, made up of about £60 on Tesco delivery of essentials and £40 at M&S/Waitrose for more luxury type items/treats

Proudboomer · 05/03/2021 17:37

I try to keep to around £80 per week that is for 5 adults but 2 of them buy their own food apart from basics like bread, milk, eggs and loo roll, kitchen roll and cleaning stuff.
Every month or so I will also go to farmfoods and do a bulk shop of loo roll, kitchen roll, cat food and if I have spare trays of soft drinks but usually around another £50 to £70.

PattyPan · 05/03/2021 17:39

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair you’re sane, don’t worry Grin

@Mypremiumwhat here’s an 11 page thread the same as this one that was started 3 days ago www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4181495-How-much-is-your-weekly-food-shop

Tier500 · 05/03/2021 17:49

I’d love to go to aldi or Lidl but don’t drive so get Morrison’s delivery. Somehow we were spending over £100/week (more like £120) for 2 adults + toddler but I’ve cut it down now to more like £80/90. Definitely noticed prices increasing in the last year or two.

Cheesecakeandwine · 05/03/2021 17:52

I spend around £150 -£170 each week for 2 adults and 7 children includes household/toiletries.

Labobo · 05/03/2021 18:03

About £160-200pw for four adults (DC both late teens) But that includes everything - all cleaning products, cat food, occasional bottle of wine, flowers, toiletries etc. And DH does insist we shop at a very expensive supermarket and also buys enough unnecessary snacks to feed a team of Everest explorers.

I'm much tighter than he is but it's a pointless battle because if I go easy on treats he buys twice as many the following week.

JesusAteMyHamster · 05/03/2021 18:09

We're 3 adults.

I try to keep it under £80 as the remainder goes in the Christmas fund......it's usually about £70 PW and the bulk goes on meat/ fruit/ veg.

Probably about £3 PW on cleaning spray / shampoo / conditioner. Toiletries we get in TK maxx.......well we did. Luckily we have loads in.

We eat quite simply and don't really snack so costs are pretty low.

wishes1111 · 05/03/2021 18:32

We switched to Aldi 2 years ago from Tesco or Sainsbury's and we spend £200 a month for everything food related.

The meat is so much better in Aldi, less water, bigger chicken breasts etc, steaks are delicious, mince has lots of flavour.

I find that fruit and veg lasts longer too.

I am a stickler for Lenor, Ariel, Flash and decent dishwasher tablets. Also my shampoo and conditioner as I use Aussie or Herbal Essences, DH would wash his hair with just about anything so he doesn't care) so spend about £15 a month extra on washing and toiletries products.

Meant to say this is for a month for 2 adults including a couple bottles of wine, some beer and snacks.
Coldbatteredpuddings · 05/03/2021 18:40

I order most of our meat and fish from free range / ethical suppliers for about £150 a month. Then about 100 - 150 a week in the supermarket for the rest of the food, cleaning, toiletries and booze. All in about £140 - £190 per week roughly.

Coldbatteredpuddings · 05/03/2021 18:41

Should say 2 adults and 2 teens.
