2 adults 4 dcs here (aged 7 down to toddler) and since covid, our grocery budget has slowly eeked up and we're now spending £130-£150 p/w. We don't drink so no alcohol included, but that figure does include toiletries like shower gel and also cleaning products. The kids take packed lunches to school, and with dh and I both working from home, the groceries include lunch for us too.

I shop at a more expensive supermarket cos they're the only ones that deliver to my house (and they charge a fiver to deliver which ups the cost even more), but I reckon if I dragged my arse to aldi or lidl I could probably knock at least £50 off my budget. I cook lots from scratch, and lots by batch.

Am I being unrealistic to think I could get a good weeks shopping in aldi or lidl for under £100? The only concern I have would be that the fruit, veg and bread from aldi doesn't last as long, and I'd hate to have to do a top up shop as I'd end up spending more.

£150 including 1 takeaway a week and booze/toiletries/cleaning products for 2 adults 1 child. Eat well, local butchers and veggie shop with Lidl for everything else

Marmite27 · 06/03/2021 07:23

@BettyOBarley

£80-100 per week with an online Asda delivery here. Two adults and two young children. I've tried Aldi a couple of times and always end up spending more as I'm chucking all sorts in the trolley!
It’s taken us nearly a year to settle down in Aldi and not be buying stuff to ‘try’ Wink
MeadowViews · 06/03/2021 07:24

£40-50 at most a week, but just 2 adults, no pets or kids. We don't drink alcohol or eat much meet, I food shop in Aldi and buy toiletries in Savers and Wilko. I cook from scratch, big batch cook meals with lots of lentils and beans (curries, stews etc) as we're happy having the same evening meal 3/4 times in a row which I know wouldn't suit most people.

5 years ago my same shop was no more than £30 so it's definitely more expensive now!

Organisedchaos2022 · 06/03/2021 07:36

We spend about 400 a month

2 adults 2 kids and a baby and a dog.

georgarina · 06/03/2021 07:41

Around £100 pw for three people, mainly in Sainsbury's because we live next to it

FuckyouBrennan · 06/03/2021 07:43

I shop at Aldi & top up with bits from Asda that I can’t get in there.
We’re 2 adults, 3 DC, 2 in nappies and it’s usually between £90-£110
Toiletries, alcohol and cleaning products are bought separately.

Stopsnowing · 06/03/2021 07:48

I used to be able to do a weekly shop at Aldi for 3 for 50 quid but that was pre pandemic. Most recently using Clubcard the shop was 76 quid. I will start going back to Aldi’s but their fruit and veg are pretty poor.
The kids have been eating me out of house and home during lockdown.
I think I need to do two shops. Maybe one at Aldi for basics and then a top up.

Stopsnowing · 06/03/2021 07:49

I should add “using a Clubcard at Tesco”

Laudaroc · 06/03/2021 07:53

I just added up last week i spent 180.00 not including a takeaway. So about 200pw more or less. 2 adults 2 teens . All meals/snacks/drinks/husband takes leftovers for lunch. Be interesting to see how much it is next week when kids are back at school.

Unmute · 06/03/2021 07:59

40-60 a week for me and teenage ds, including toiletries, cleaning stuff etc, but not including dog food which I buy separately. We shop at Waitrose because the local Tesco doesn't sell raspberry jelly with raspberries in it, or nice olives. Both essential.

Bear2014 · 06/03/2021 08:01

We alternate weeks doing Ocado and Lidl (£120 and £50 ish so average about £80 per week). Then on top we have a fortnightly fruit and veg box and twice weekly milkman so another £20 per week I think. And a weekly takeaway. So £120-130 per week, 2 adults and 2 children. Hopefully to be reduced when they're back on free school lunches!

WhoEatsPopTarts · 06/03/2021 08:05

£230 ish, DH, 3 teens and I. No alcohol. We generally shop at Aldi or Tesco with top ups from Sainsbury’s. Takeaway once a week. Two dcs will go back to Uni soon, but that won’t save us any money because they need money to survive there.

Nodancingshoes · 06/03/2021 09:20

£85-£95 at Lidl for 2 adults and 2 children. No pets.

MRSGGG · 06/03/2021 09:29

Lighthearted but should all of these people that shop in 3/4 places still have been doing that during the pandemic Grin...my MIL has been adamant for the last year that she hadn't been anywhere when she had been in 4,5,6 shops during the course of a week plus sister, neice, childcare and so on and so forth...LOL

MRSGGG · 06/03/2021 09:30

*niece

dewisant2020 · 06/03/2021 09:33

£60 - £80 a week, 2 adults and a dog, I have just swapped from Tesco to Aldi and it's a huge difference in price and the quality is good.
We eat home made healthy food every day so quite happy with that price

PickAChew · 06/03/2021 09:41

About 250pw, 2 adults, 2 teens, includes booze, toiletries and cleaning stuff. Mix of m&s, sainsburys, waitrose delivery and occasional ocado delivery. I do have a sainsburys midweek delivery pass but haven't used it much because the fresh stuff is often short dated and the store it comes from doesn't have much higher welfare chicken or pork and we have a big store about 2km away (right next to the M&S food Hall) so I usually book my weekly delivery from the stores I can't visit in person.

Shelovesamystery · 06/03/2021 09:54

We spend about £60 in Aldi for the main shop of food and cleaning products. Then another £20-£40 in Sainsburys on treats and bits and bobs that we can't get in Aldi. Basically if we need lots of cleaning products and buy quite a few treats that week then it can go up to £100 but if we don't need much and are on a tight budget that week then we can do it for about £70. Alcohol is bought separately though, DH and I have separate money and alcohol and my personal toiletries come out of our own money.

2 adults and 2 young DC's.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 06/03/2021 10:04

@Hoppinggreen

£200-250 PW with Ocado during lockdown. 2 adults and 2 teens It should go down once the dc are back at school
Jesus wept! Do you sprinkle gold dust on your cereal!? Didn't think it was possible to spend a grand a month on food.

How the other half lives Shock (I'm just jealous)

oblada · 06/03/2021 10:12

200pw from Ocado is a lot! I can't even get bloody delivery slot with them despite being on the smart pass for almost 10yrs! Lol I've just cancelled the damn thing so now I get Asda once a month and Ocado once a month and just do a very late delivery for free lol I reckon I've saved a bit by moving half the shopping to Asda.

Hagqueen · 06/03/2021 10:41

£50ish a week, includes tops ups and cleaning products/basic toiletries but not the odd takeaway. Its just me and the dog. I know I could do cheaper, I just prefer the ease of getting it all delivered from Tesco, and usually get a few bits from Marks too. Mostly fresh everything though.

Popcornriver · 06/03/2021 10:52

Averages about 100 a week but can vary massively defending on which pet foods/cleaning stuff/toiletries we need that week. The bulk of the money goes on meat/fruit/vegetables. Could do it a lot cheaper but we've been having nicer meals and extra bits here and there since we're not eating out and not ordering takeaway as often. Always pick up an extra of something too for the food bank trolley. Extra snacks has pushed the price up whilst schools have been closed but weekly school lunches cost more than the snacks so I'm not too fussed.

Whammyyammy · 06/03/2021 11:37

On Thursday we spend on average:
ALDI £50
Sainsbury £80
M &S £30

During the week probably about £25 in village shop(fresh produce).

Me, husband and 21 Yr old DD. 2 dogs

Crazycakelady17 · 06/03/2021 12:24

We spend about £130 in Aldi a week including a bottle of wine and £20 in ASDA on branded things that’s 2 adults one teen one primary school child and a dog.
Also send DS1 £30 a week for shopping at uni and he eats well for that I see the photos he puts on his fitness page on Instagram!

user143677433 · 06/03/2021 12:34

2 adults, 2 adult-sized teenagers £120-£170 per week. That includes all toiletries, cleaning products etc and a bottle of wine a week. We don’t get takeaway so it includes luxuries like posh-pizza instead, as that still works out cheaper.

I could definitely cut it to £80-£120 if I wanted to, but I don’t need to and it already includes everything we want.

I’m pretty sure, due to experimentation of doing it different ways, that it works out better for us to know that everything is delivered and in the house - so there’s no popping out to the coffee shop, or ice cream shop, or deli - we have nice things at home already.

Obviously if we were on a strict budget it would be different.
