To be dreading MMR

Ds is 14 months old and finally has an appointment for his 1 year jabs tomorrow and I’m really anxious about MMR.

Not about autism it’s more the side effects I’m so worried he’ll be dead poorly.

What should I expect after this?

Babies are incredibly resiliant. He'll be fine. Mine was so indignant that the doctor gave him the injection he railed against the process afterwards in the waiting room vowing, 'I'm going to stab Doctor Park.' He was 2.

No side effects, just a affronted.

UmbilicusProfundus · 03/03/2021 23:28

Did you worry or did he have any problems with the multiple other jabs he’s already (presumably) had. He might have a slight temperature or be not quite himself for a short period, but this happens dozens of times in the early years for a variety of reasons. It’s really not a big deal.

Bellver888 · 03/03/2021 23:32

He’s been absolutely fine with all his others, I had a serious case of urging to slap the nurse disease!

I’ve read a bloody horror story about it causing fits and all sorts so I’m crapping my pants and whenever I’ve asked I get the serious side effect people only and then I flap it even more! I do have health anxiety and I’m hoping it’s a flare up

@tararabumdeay Stab doctor park hahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣 I her doctor park went home that day and had his family in fits with that

He'll be fine. Slight raised temperature & a bit grizzly is my experience. You really are doing the best thing by getting him vaccinated. Just remember it may seem scary but nothing compared to getting measles or mumps.

UmbilicusProfundus · 03/03/2021 23:37

Ha ha. People tend to notice the odd horror story because the 1,000,000s of people without horror stories have nothing to say.

I imagine the MMR vaccine (after the autism link fake news scandal) has been examined in even more detail than other childhood vaccines and still there are no concerns about safety. Especially when your son has had previous vaccinations with no issue!

VestaTilley · 03/03/2021 23:37

Why? It’s absolutely fine. My DS has no effects whatsoever.

The first baby jabs he was a bit hot and grizzly afterwards, but all others fine.

tararabumdeay · 03/03/2021 23:39

Yes, I bet Dr Park did go home laughing about that.

Just to clarify though 'stab' was not part of our parlance and DS might have misheard 'jab'.

He's a teacher now. Started talking at 12months and hasn't stopped since.

CoalCraft · 03/03/2021 23:40

You're so concerned about him getting poorly that... You're willing to risk a disease that would make him much poorlier?

Bellver888 · 03/03/2021 23:41

Well I looked on Facebook (🙄 I know I know) and there were absolute hoards of women saying their kids had fits, lumps in necks and rashes and when I tell u I crapped myself, obviously these reactions were only cured by a “homeopath”

Hopefully a bit of calpol and a cheeky chocolate bar will see him through

Ileflottante · 03/03/2021 23:41

Why did you want to slap a nurse vaccinating your child against diseases that could seriously harm him?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/03/2021 23:41

I can’t remember anything about it for my three kids, they can’t have had much of a reaction to it.

Bellver888 · 03/03/2021 23:42

@CoalCraft no I am not willing to risk him getting any disease like that. I just wanted to know how common the bad side effects actually are

My cousin had encephalitis at 18 through measles so I know the severity

OP posts:
Bellver888 · 03/03/2021 23:43

@tararabumdeay I love that 😂😂 stab dr park hahahaha

Nellythemouse · 03/03/2021 23:46

Mine had a very mild imitation of measles a few days afterwards- bit of a rash, tired and moderately high temperature for a couple of days. Gave some calpol and they were ok. The booster jab had no side effects at all. Honestly, it’s a million times better than them actually getting proper measles or mumps.

Nellythemouse · 03/03/2021 23:55

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/mmr-vaccine/

Lots of information here including rates of different side effects. Fitting is very rare.

Bellver888 · 03/03/2021 23:56

@Nellythemouse you’re a star that’s the side effect I was abit wary of, I want to prepare myself rather than it just happen and my health anxiety starts popping off

OP posts:
Nellythemouse · 04/03/2021 00:06

That’s understandable, of course you want to know what to expect. I mean this kindly though - don’t feed your anxiety by using Facebook for health matters! Go to a reputable site.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 04/03/2021 00:12

My two were fine after MMR. DC2 had a couple of unsettled nights but she was a bloody awful sleeper anyway. The only slightly bad experience we had was with the oral one they give around 16 weeks or so. So many poonamis and she was in a terrible mood for days. Ah memories.

Bellver888 · 04/03/2021 00:18

@kwiksavenofrillsusername yep we had some big poos after that one too! another awful sleeper here so im thinking that may be his main side effect, any excuse to be awake at the night i think at this point haha!

FFSAllTheGoodOnesArereadyTaken · 04/03/2021 00:24

Mine had a 48 hour fever after their baby ones (meningitis I think they reacted to) and I was worried about the mmr but absolutely fine. Other than realising what was going on and not being best pleased

VikingLady · 04/03/2021 00:29

I helped run baby groups for five years and the only side effect I ever saw first hand was the standard temperature/grumpy/rash.

WideLegJeans · 04/03/2021 04:48

Mine had s temp and then a secondary temp 10 days later. The nurse explained that could happen as some of the vaccines are live. Otherwise he was fine.

singlemummanurse · 04/03/2021 05:03

My kid was fine with mmr. I've had to have the mmr a few times cos no matter how many times I have the mmr my serology comes back as no immunity to the r (yay me one of the lucky 0.5% that it doesn't provide immunity to and a profession that if you don't have immunity means lots of needles). No side effects other than once feeling under the weather. This is with me having the full course either 2 or 3 times and a booster at least once or twice if once was the booster rather than full course.

Belice9222 · 04/03/2021 05:28

My child was vaccine injured at 3 and 4 months, we are currently going to the vaccine injuries court, born healthy baby, she needs care for life. I don't think you are unreasonable, if I can ask you to do something I wish I had done, find the patient information leaflet, go through the possible side effects and the ingredients. Postpone until you have done more research and are confident in your decision.
